Your first year as a nurse

Your first year as a nurse

During the first years as nurse, you will acquire many experiences but you should keep in mind that you are new employee and that easy feeling of comfort actually only occurs with time. Learning new things is not easy, but it is really gratifying. Always ask questions: there aren't stupid questions if not misinterpreted. Remember that everyone started where you are. Ask and you will be wiser than you were before.

Get there early for work. If you receive report at 7:00 am be there at 6:30am. Many nurses appreciate you replacing them early and are more than happy to provide you report. Always try to be friendly, an advice is learning everyone's name and say hello and good bye every day. Have lunch with someone you don't know well.

During these first stressful years, take care of yourself. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating well, and being physically active. Don't forget to relax in your free time. Have someone you can talk to outside of work. This can be anyone whom you trust and who will actually pay attention.

Be positive every day, the positive words motivate you to achieve great things. Avoid negative people. You can be a great nurse but it requires a little practice, a lot of patience, and a positive attitude.
