Pacific Union College (Nursing Department)
The faculty of the Department of Nursing is committed to providing a broad, liberal and professional education to a diverse population of traditional and adult nursing students in multiple settings. This task is undertaken in a climate of Christian service, dedicated to the development of the whole person, and designed to serve the health needs of individuals, families, and the community at large. The curriculum and activities of the nursing program are planned in harmony with the mission of the College and of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which it represents.
The department offers both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing may be completed in one of two ways. Students who do not hold a nursing license attain their degree through a two-year, traditional format curriculum taught on the Angwin campus. Students already working as licensed vocational nurses may attain their degree through an eighteen-month non-traditional format LVN to RN Associate Degree taught at the Travis Air Force Base campus in Fairfield, CA, and at Hanford Community Hospital in Hanford, CA. LVN's may also apply for advanced placement within the traditional program on the Angwin campus.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN NURSING
The professional registered nurse faces increasing challenges in the ever-expanding field of nursing. PUC has responded by designing a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) program to accommodate the working professional. The purpose of this degree completion program is to provide necessary skills for expanded nursing practice, opportunities for professional advancement, and preparation for graduate school.
The classroom hours, concentrated into core weeks, allow for continuing work responsibilities and encourage independent learning. The one-year plan includes three academic quarters of full-time nursing courses; the two-year plan allows for a reduced course load. The reduced plan is the preferred route for students with a heavy work schedule or who have not yet met their general education (GE) requirements.
There are two classroom locations in northern California:
* PUC campus, Angwin – for full-time and half-time students * North bay program at Vacaville – for half-time students only
The BSN students plan their own clinical schedules and participate in their mentor selection, thereby creating clinical experiences that enhance their professional goals. Clinical sites may be arranged with local hospitals and agencies in the students’ home town.
The admission criteria for acceptance into the BSN program include:
* ADN with current RN licensure * Chemistry 101 (co-requisite) * Completion of GE for full-time status
