Humboldt State University (Department of Nursing)
The Department of Nursing offers a traditional Bachelors degree in nursing as well as a bridge program for Registered nurses to obtain their bachelors degree.
Humboldt State University is nestled in the Redwoods of Northern California. Our students in the Department of Nursing enjoy the opportunity of small classes, rural clinical placements and a holistic nursing focus. Students at Humboldt State enjoy a safe campus, community employment opportunities and numerous campus activities.
The Department of Nursing offers a four- year baccalaureate nursing program which is fully accredited by the California State Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Once students are admitted to the major, the program consists of six semesters. Students are eligible to take the state licensing exam after successful completion of required nursing major courses.
The baccalaureate degree in nursing has been identified by the major professional nursing groups as entry level into the practice of professional nursing. Unlike diploma and two-year nursing programs, the bachelor of science degree in nursing is built upon a base of study in the liberal arts with clinical experience concentrated in the upper level of study.
PHILOSOPHY
In accordance with the philosophy of Humboldt State University, we believe that baccalaureate nursing education for the professional nurse should encompass a broad background in the liberal arts and sciences.
The faculty believes that the professional nurse, in addition to demonstrating expertise in practice, should be able to think critically, act independently and responsibly, recognize the unique qualities of each client, make a socially significant and personally gratifying contribution to society, and function in a manner consistent with a consciousness of the relationship of the individual to the total environment. The faculty believes that the focus of nursing is on the client as an individual, family or community. We believe that the client constantly interacts with the environment and adapts in situations of health and illness throughout the life span. The faculty has organized the curriculum based on views of client, health, environment and nursing. This philosophy is influenced by the theory of Modeling and Role Modeling (Erickson, Tomlin and Swain, 1983).
