California State University, Bakersfield (Department of Nursing) California State Colleges were brought together as a system by the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960. In 1972, the system became The California State University and Colleges, and in 1982 the system became The California State University (CSU).

California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley approximately 110 miles north of Los Angeles. It is the only four year institution within a 100 mile radius, is located in the city of Bakersfield, a commercial, medical and educational center for the region with a regional population of 750,000, including the city and the unincorporated areas. Thirty buildings provide classroom, laboratory, administrative and technical support facilities. Enrollment is approximately 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students served by a faculty of nearly 300.

The University is organized into four schools: Natural Sciences, Mathematics (NSM); Humanities and Social Sciences, Business and Public Administration, and Education. The Department of Nursing is one of seven departments in the School of NSM.

The Department of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and a Master of Science in Nursing degree. The Department also offers a post-baccalaureate school health services credential program and a post master’s family nurse practitioner certificate program.

CSUB received a 10-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges following a site visit in October 1999. The undergraduate program and the Family Nurse practitioner option in the graduate program received five years continuing approval by the California State Board of Registered Nursing in 1998. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the School Nursing program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Courses designed to assist Registered Nurses to complete the requirements of the baccalaureate degree are taught at the Bakersfield campus and at two distant community colleges: College of the Sequoias in Visalia (85 miles north of Bakersfield) and Antelope Valley in Lancaster (90 miles east of Bakersfield).

The mission of the Department of Nursing is to provide a collaborative and interactive learning environment committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and practice. The outstanding faculty provides Nursing education to undergraduate and graduate students seeking entry into professional nursing or advanced practice. The Department of Nursing fosters mutual collaboration with the community of interest.

Graduates will have acquired knowledge, skills, competencies and values essential to the practice of professional nursing. Professional nurses make autonomous and collaborative judgments in a variety of healthcare situations and are accountable for their practice. In recognition of the health needs of a multicultural society, professional nurses address healthcare issues and needs of their community of interest.
