University of San Francisco (School of Nursing)
What an exciting time for the nursing profession and what terrific time for the University of San Francisco School of Nursing. The demands that have emerged in health care for an increased number of nurses and nurses with advance educational preparation has created an unprecedented opportunity for the school of contribute to advances in patient care outcomes. The school has a vibrant baccalaureate program that is one of the few programs on the West Coast to admit students as freshmen. As a result the undergraduate students in the nursing major are among the very best in the university. Graduates earn their bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN) and are eligible to sit for licensure (NCLEX) as a registered nurse (RN). Graduates of the program enjoy an extremely high NCLEX pass rate and secure employment in a variety of health care settings.
The school has expanded its graduate offerings. We offer a master’s of science degree in nursing (MSN) with a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) focus. The CNL is an advanced generalist who provides optimal outcome based patient care, providing for continuity and optimizing staff’s ability to provide high quality care in a cost efficient manner. The MSN program at USF is accessible to nurses with a BSN, RNs with a baccalaureate degree in other disciplines, and RNs with an associate’s degree or diploma. In addition there is a master’s entry (ME-CNL) option for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in anther field and want to become an RN and develop the skills as a clinical nurse leader.
Our newest graduate opportunity is the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program. The DNP at USF is accredited by the Wesern Association of Schools and Colleges and is the first such program in California preparing graduates for advance practice specialties. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the professional organization for higher education in nursing, has recommended that by 2015 all nursing specialty preparation should occur at the doctoral level. The DNP is a practice-focused doctorate. Graduates are prepared as nurse practitioners (direct advanced practice) and healthcare system leaders (indirect advanced practice). Nurses with either the BSN or those who have already earned the MSN can pursue the degree. The program of study is designed to be responsive to the educational and practice preparation of the student.
The challenges in health care continue to grow and the need for leaders in the profession is greater than ever. In our unsettled and evolving health care system, nurses can provide critical leadership and be among the architects of change, with greater emphasis on prevention and universal access to cost-effective, culturally competent, high quality care. Our motto at USF is Educating minds and hearts to change the world. In the School of Nursing it is educating minds and hearts to care for the world. I am delighted that you are considering joining us on our journey forward.
VISION

MISSION
The mission of the School of Nursing is to advance nursing education within the context of the Jesuit tradition. The school uses dynamic and innovative approaches in undergraduate and graduate nursing education to prepare professionals for current and future practice domains. The goal is to effectively link classroom and clinical experiences with expectations for competence, compassion, and justice in health care within the context of the highest academic standards.
BSN
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a four-year degree program designed to meet the needs of future health care delivery systems. The program serves traditional and non-traditional students, freshman and transfer students, LVNs and RNs.
The curriculum designed for nursing majors at the University of San Francisco is based on a conceptual framework and reflects the philosophy that a professional nurse needs a liberal background for professional development and personal growth. The program prepares men and women for beginning positions in nursing, provides the means for personal and professional advancement, and qualifies them for progression into programs that offer advanced degrees.
The curriculum combines a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with theory, practice and clinical laboratory experiences. Helping students to learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and provide therapeutic intervention are the goals that underlay the entire nursing program. Through hands-on use of health related equipment in the Learning Resource Center, students learn to strengthen their clinical skills, evaluation techniques and priority setting: all essential elements of professional nursing practice.
Beginning in the sophomore year, students will be able to put into practice the theory and skills they have learned through their extensive clinical experiences.
The BSN curriculum requires that students become more active learners. It will also prepare graduates for professional practice in the community as the number of community based opportunities increase.
The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the California State Board of Registered Nursing. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) and are eligible for the California Public Health Nursing Certificate.
A minimum of 128 semester units is required to fulfill all the University requirements for graduation and to earn the Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree with a major in nursing.
