University of Hartford (College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions)
The five departments of the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions form an academic unit that provides students with a comprehensive educational experience. Faculty members employ resources and facilities both on campus and within the community to offer baccalaureate programs in the service-oriented professions of clinical laboratory science/medical technology, education, health science, human services, nursing, radiologic technology, and respiratory care. The Department of Health Sciences offers undergraduate articulation programs leading to graduate study in dentistry, chiropractic, optometry, osteopathic medicine, and podiatry.
The Department of Physical Therapy offers a combined B.S. in Health Science/Doctor of Physical Therapy program (see page 284 for undergraduate information and the Graduate Bulletin for the doctoral program). Programs within the college are accredited through the appropriate nationally recognized agencies (see page 11) and use a wide variety of resources to provide the student with outstanding educational experiences. Programs integrate classroom study and practical experience. Faculty members within the college hold professional and graduate-level degrees and have extensive practical experience. The smallclass environment, combined with a personal advising and counseling system, allows each student to prepare successfully for a career in a chosen service-oriented profession.
MISSION
Welcome to the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Hartford. We offer a wide variety of programs, from the bachelors all the way to the doctorate. All of them, however, share a commitment to Professional Preparation. More specifically:
* We prepare students to take the next step in their professional development. You may be a high school student who wants to become a teacher or a counselor, or a teacher who wants to improve your skills. You may be interested in a leadership position in schools or human services. You may be a nurse who wants to develop new credentials and expand career options. You may be interested in certificates or degrees in the Health Professions. Or you may have a dream of becoming a Physical Therapist. There are complete descriptions of all these educational opportunities on this site. * Being a professional means more than being skilled. Throughout your education here your program will blend essential knowledge, skills, and sensibilities. * All of our programs combine theory and practice. As you learn new skills and ideas, you will be practicing their application in a variety of settings.
We are the service professions. We have a deep commitment to society in general and to local communities in particular. Our commitment is not just an abstract concept. Our students and faculty are in the local community all the time. Every program offers service learning and internship opportunities. Our faculty are also in the community helping to solve real world problems.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree program is an upper-level program designed for the practicing nurse who already holds the RN license. Graduates of the B.S.N. program are prepared for advancement in professional nursing as well as graduate study in nursing.
The B.S.N. curriculum focuses on transforming the student’s perspective from passive to active learner, acute care to community focus, medical to nursing model, disease to health promotion orientation, job to career, and individualism to a community of scholarly caring.
