Wesley College (Department of Nursing)
1967 – December 2004 Associate in Science in Nursing
Wesley College Department of Nursing has a long tradition of providing innovative nursing education. Wesley College began the first Associate Degree Nursing Program in Delaware in 1967. We were accredited by the National League for Nurses Accrediting Commission with our first graduating class in 1969, and maintained the accredited status for the ADN program until December 2004 when the final class of associate degree students graduated. Thirty-seven years of Associate Degree Nursing Education contributed valuable nurse leaders to the profession of nursing!
1994 Master of Science in Nursing
To meet the needs of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) graduate who wanted further education, Wesley College Department of Nursing developed the Masters of Science in Nursing to carry a student from the ADN to MSN in five semesters plus a summer.
This career mobility model prepares the graduate to function as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Health Promotion and Wellness. The MSN program is fully accredited by the National League for Nurses Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
2003 Bachelor of Science in Nursing
In response to the increased demand for nurses and the growing emphasis on community-based care, requiring a nurse armed with higher levels of independence and critical thinking, Wesley College Department of Nursing now offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
The Department of Nursing has its own computer laboratory. A clinical skills laboratory equipped to simulate various health care settings. Both labs are designed to assist the nursing student in learning new skills and develop critical thinking and decision-making.
PHILOSOPHY
The Department of Nursing embraces the beliefs of Wesley College. These beliefs philosophically underpin all program development and design within the Department of Nursing. Further beliefs are stated in terms of nursing education, nursing practice, and health, as nursing has a distinct body of knowledge which guides nursing practice.
Beliefs fundamental to the Department of Nursing are expressed within the core value of community, and the building of community capacity within the framework of nursing education and nursing practice. Nursing education should serve the individual nurse, the profession and the community. Nursing education is a dynamic process that upholds the principles of life-long learning and respects previous knowledge the individual brings to the educational environment. Nursing education provides a unique, holistic base of theoretic knowledge that prepares the individual to practice in ways that facilitate and promote the health of individuals, families, and communities.
Health is defined as an integrated method of functioning. It is developing and interacting in meaningful ways with the social and physical environment with the goal of maximizing one’s potential (capacity).
The practice of nursing is fundamentally client based, and requires a broad and holistic view of health within the context of community. Nursing practice is collaborative in nature, and requires independent critical thought, a broad theory base, and a scholarly approach to problem solving as well as health promotion.
MISSION STATEMEN
The Department of Nursing mission embraces the Wesley College mission. Basic principles of holism, community, lifelong learning and critical thinking are incorporated into the curriculum design furthering excellence in teaching, clinical practice and scholarship.
