Florida State University (College of Nursing)

Florida State University (College of Nursing) At FSU, the challenge is extraordinary, but so too is the guidance and support you receive. Our faculty are some of the most outstanding educators, clinicians, scholars, and researchers in the state, nation, and the world. Every one of them is committed to the next generation of nurses. Access to them is easy. Class sizes are small. Results are well above the national average. At FSU, nursing students are colleagues in training.

When asked why they came to FSU, the number one reason given by prospective and new nursing students and their families, is that the College of Nursing is the friendliest and most welcoming school they visited. We sincerely think that is true because we know that becoming a nurse is not an easy proposition; and being a nurse is a lifetime of unique, demanding, and wonderful challenges. Many times it takes collaboration and encouragement from colleagues.

The College of Nursing provides a “Community-Based” curriculum so clinical experiences at FSU are many and varied and are not limited to a single healthcare center, system, or philosophy. Clinical rotations afford the opportunities to experience diverse settings in many of the best healthcare agencies throughout the state and southeastern region. Internships too, are available in a host of specialties, settings, and locations.

Never before have the opportunities for nurses been greater. Not only is there a need for well qualified and highly skilled BSN RN’s, but the demand for advanced practice nurses, nurse managers, nurses for private and public agencies and companies, nurse anesthetists, emergency care, and especially nurse educators, is critical. The FSU College of Nursing continually earns its reputation as a proven preparation leader.

Founded in 1950, the FSU School of Nursing was the first nationally accredited baccalaureate degree in nursing in the state of Florida. Today, it continues to provide the highest standard of nursing education to very bright students. In fact, currently the GPA for incoming freshman is above 4.0, and the upperclassmen coming into the BSN program is 3.78.

For over 50 years, Florida State University’s graduate nurses have made a difference in the lives and the health of the people of Florida and beyond. More than 5,000 Noles Nurses have made, and continue to make contributions by leading the way in virtually every community and in every nursing specialty at every level.

When you become a Noles Nurse you have a solid foundation. You are ready to take the next step into whichever area of specialty you choose. Whether that is a hospital or clinical setting, or an advanced academic area of specialty, you can begin your nursing journey with confidence and curiosity. There will probably be Noles Nurses all around you to lend a hand.

The Florida State University College of Nursing has been approved by the Florida Board of Nursing since 1950. It has been accredited by the National League for Nursing since the first class graduated in 1952. It is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The College of Nursing is located in Duxbury Hall, a modern four-story facility on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Housed in the college are classrooms, the Procedure Development Lab (PDL), a computer lab, Learning Resource Center (LRC) and faculty and staff offices.

The quality of the College’s educational program draws large numbers of applicants. A characteristic of the nursing student body is diversity. Approximately 20% of the undergraduate students and nearly 28% of the graduate students are ethnic minorities. Nearly 10% of the undergraduates and 16% of the graduate students are male. In fact, a research article in the spring 2006 issue of Male Nurse Magazine put the FSU CON in the Top Ten Male Friendly Nursing Schools in the U.S. These characteristics, along with non-traditional students, often with other earned degrees and varied life and work experiences, enrich the quality of educational experiences for students and faculty.

Currently, approximately 72 undergraduate upper level students are admitted twice a year into the BSN program. The graduate program presently has 110 students enrolled in the Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Educator programs.

Students practice and learn with colleagues in acute care hospitals, county health units, nursing homes, private physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, walk-in clinics and state-level agencies for clinical experiences. Students have input into the selection of sites for clinical experience to meet their specific learning needs and practice interests.

Financial assistance in the form of scholarships, loans, assistantships, and traineeships is available for qualified students through the College of Nursing or the University Financial Aid Office. Federal Nurse Traineeships are awarded by the graduate committee of the College of Nursing for full-time study. The graduate committee also awards the University graduate teaching or research assistantship funds allocated to the College each year. Applications for the financial assistance are considered each semester.
