North Georgia College & State University (Department of Nursing)

North Georgia College & State University (Department of Nursing) The Department of Nursing was established in 1974 with the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing program. The nursing department has continued to expand with the addition of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing program on the main campus, ASN Satellite Programs in Acworth, Cumming, and Gainesville, Georgia, and an LPN / RN Bridge Program . Our Master of Science / Family Nurse Practitioner Program. was establishednin 1998 and our neweste program is the Master of Science in Nursing Education (2006).

The North Georgia College and State University is a senior military institution and the Corps of Cadets and military tradition play an integral role in campus life. Under a recent agreement with the U.S. Army, the Department of Nursing is proud of our designation as a Partner in Nursing Education with the U.S. Army. We are also proud to welcome a number of Corps of Cadets to our Nursing Programs.

In 2002 NGCSU received the designation of Leadership Institution and fully implemented a leadership initiative across campus. Through this initiative students in all programs of study are afforded opportunities to complete a minor in Leadership either associated with their Military program of study or their chosen major, and participate in leadership projects on campus. In addition, students and faculty may apply for grant funding to assist them in their education through the leadership initiative program.

The practice of nursing has changed dramatically in the last several years. Nurses who participate and guide these changes must reflect a sound commitment to the profession and rigorous preparation. We, the nursing Faculty and Staff, have much to offer our nursing students as they pursue their personal, educational, and career goals. All programs of study are designed to develop proficiency in technical and professional skills through which caring will flourish, to stimulate scientific inquiry, to promote use of self enrichment activities, to prepare for immediate employment, and to encourage understanding for different viewpoints while respecting the rights of all individuals.

The purpose of NGCSU's baccalaureate nursing program is to assist the diploma nurse and/or the associate degree nurse to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The program prepares the professional nurse generalist to perform five interrelated roles: clinician, leader, educator, researcher and professional. Building upon competencies held by the student, the program extends her/his knowledge base and scope of practice to allow increased career opportunities, personal and professional satisfaction, and a sound base for graduate education. The program is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing.

The B.S.N. program is designed to coordinate upper division general academic and nursing courses. A total of 57 semester hours of college credit beyond the associate's degree is required. Academic and nursing courses are offered on the North Georgia College & State University campus. Daytime classes are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, sequenced so that students can complete the nursing courses in 3 semesters. Evening classes are also available , sequenced over two academic years (4 semesters) . The length of time required to complete the baccalaureate nursing program, depends on previous course credits, student preference and availability of faculty. All graduates of the major must pass the clinical component of Nursing 3510, 4410, 4520, and 4600 as well as the Nursing 3330 performance exam.

A variety of clinical experiences are selected by the baccalaureate nursing faculty in primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings. These experiences assist the professional nursing student to provide quality care to a variety of clients. Baccalaureate nursing students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from campus and the clinical setting.

Those baccalaureate nursing students seeking an Army commission must meet the requirements of the military science courses of the Senior Division Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program established by the Department of the Army. Completion of ROTC basic course, advanced course and advanced camp is required. Students should refer to the Department of Military Science section for courses and requirements.
