Welcome (or welcome back) to Hawai’i Pacific University’s School of Nursing. I wish you a smooth journey on your educational pathway to obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) and becoming a professional nurse.
In order to facilitate your journey, the nursing faculty is committed to guiding you by sharing their expertise and knowledge. PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the School of Nursing is in harmony with the University mission. We believe that the basic preparation for professional nursing is a liberal arts and science education at the baccalaureate level. We adhere to the essential features of contemporary nursing practice as outlined in the American Nurses Association Nursing Social Policy Statement, Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. Contemporary nursing practice has human responses as its primary concern.
The philosophy of the School of Nursing incorporates beliefs about people, environment, health, learning and nursing. These beliefs support the School of Nursing mission.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING
"The profession of nursing is a very exciting one where, regardless of your interests, there is a niche for you. Nurses practice in most settings where people live, work, and play: hospitals, clinics, laboratories, schools, homes, industries, summer camps, public health, and research agencies; the list goes on. Even as major health care reforms take place, there will always be a demand for qualified nurses in Hawai'i, throughout the nation, and around the world.
People seeking health care today want to take a more active part in deciding what they need and the type of care they require. With the ideal of "health for all"; a goal of the United States, nurses will not only need to provide health care in a multicultural environment, but they will also need to be educated to understand the needs of more vulnerable populations. At HPU, we are educating nurses who will be able to respond to these varied demands.
At HPU, we believe that nursing education must be built upon a strong foundation of liberal arts and sciences to prepare graduates who will practice as professional nurses in the multicultural environment of our global community. The liberally educated baccalaureate nurse has the ability to analyze, think critically, and yet express the compassion needed in today's ever-changing health care environment.
Our challenging curriculum and competent, caring faculty will guide you in learning the hows and whys of caring for individuals of all ages, their families, and their communities. You will have an interesting variety of hands-on experiences in many of O'ahu's health care agencies and the opportunity to apply the concepts, theories, and skills learned in the classroom and on-campus laboratories in a wide range of clinical settings.
