DePaul University (Department of Nursing )

DePaul University (Department of Nursing ) De Paul University is one of the most prominent Catholic universities in the United States. Dedicated to the mission of St. Vincent de Paul the University is known for its teaching excellence, service to the poor, and scholarship that informs teaching and meets human needs.

The Vincentian mission, a diverse learning community, and innovative programs that aim to set the standard for the nursing profession distinguishes nursing education at DePaul University. Our vision foresees professional nurses as highly empowered clinical partners in health promotion and disease prevention, and leaders in creating a just health care system that is affordable, effective, and compassionate. This vision drives the academic programs and professional socialization for the student of nursing at DePaul University.

The nursing program began in 1948 with a baccalaureate completion program for registered nurses. In 1953 at the request of the National League for Nursing [NLN], we were the first institution in the State of Illinois to establish a graduate program in nursing.

The Department of Nursing is now part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing as well as a variety of health science courses for non-majors. In 2001, we became the first graduate generic nursing program in the state of Illinois. The nurse anesthesia program offered in collaboration with Evanston-Northwestern Health Care School of Anesthesia, formerly Ravenswood School of Anesthesia, is one of the oldest and most highly regarded in the country.

Our students comprise a diverse group of adult learners with a variety of first career interests and future goals. Registered nurses come to advance their careers and gain greater autonomy with a degree or certificate in advanced practice nursing. Non-nurses with an interest in health science and health care seek a personally rewarding career as a professional nurse with the freedom to pursue a variety of non-traditional career paths. Our graduates have successfully achieved positions as bedside nurses, case managers, community health nurses, traveling nurses, unit managers, clinical educators, educational administrators, chief nursing officers, research coordinators, and advanced practice nurses in private practice.
