University of Minnesota (School of Nursing)

University of Minnesota (School of Nursing) Established in 1909, the School of Nursing is distinct in being the first continuing nursing program on a university campus. We are proud of our history; it inspires our future.

The first program leading to a baccalaureate degree began in 1919. A master's degree program was first offered by the School of Nursing in 1950 and through the Graduate School beginning in 1962. The Ph.D. program was launched in 1983. Today we have the largest graduate program at the University of Minnesota--with numerous areas of study--and a flagship baccalaureate program with an honors program option.

The School has two campuses, one in the Twin Cities and the other in Rochester.

VISION

The School of Nursing will be a leader in knowledge development and dissemination and will be nationally and internationally recognized for at least three areas of excellence that promote the health and care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

MISSION

The mission of the School of Nursing is to generate and disseminate to students, peers, the wider community and the world knowledge necessary for improving the nursing care of individuals, families, communities and populations.

HISTORY

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing is the first continuing nursing school on a university campus in the United States. The school opened in March 1909, offering a three-year program in which four students were enrolled. In 1919, a five-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing began. The shorter nondegree program continued until 1947.

In response to the need for more prepared teachers and supervisors, specialized baccalaureate programs for R.N.s were established in the fields of nursing education (1922) and nursing administration (1955). These specialized programs were phased out in the early 1960s with the establishment in 1962 of a general nursing program for R.N.s and a four-year (13 quarters) generic baccalaureate program.

BSN PROGRAM

The School of Nursing's mission is to improve nursing care through education and research, and to respond to the health concerns of society. The undergraduate program is both clinically and academically challenging and is designed to prepare nursing leaders of the future. Graduates are eligible to take the registered nursing (RN) licensure examination and be certified as public health nurses. The School of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The growing diversity of the nation's population underscores the need to prepare future nursing practitioners and researchers who are knowledgeable and sensitive to the population's needs. The School of Nursing seeks to admit and educate a diverse student body, both in order to enrich the students' educational experience and to prepare them to meet the health needs of a diverse society. Student body characteristics that will enhance diversity in the school include leadership qualities, a strong work, community or public service record, special talents and interests, gender (males are underrepresented in the nursing profession), and a wide range of economic, social, racial/ethnic and geographic backgrounds.
