East Texas Baptist University (Frank S. Groner Endowed Memorial - School of Professional Studies - Department of Nursing)

East Texas Baptist University (Frank S. Groner Endowed Memorial - School of Professional Studies - Department of Nursing) The Department of Nursing offers a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum begins in the first semester of the junior year and is largely organized within the framework of two academic years. The ratio of general education and nursing courses is carefully selected and arranged in terms of student needs and objectives of the program. Clinical nursing experiences are provided in cooperating hospitals and health agencies.

Nursing students must meet requirements of East Texas Baptist University and the Department of Nursing in order to be granted admission. Tuition and fees for nursing courses are set by East Texas Baptist University. Program graduates earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, and are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses that, upon passing, will qualify them for licensure as registered nurses.

MISSION STATEMENT

In keeping with the Mission of East Texas Baptist University, the faculty of the Department of Nursing is dedicated to the development of intellectual inquiry, social consciousness, wellness, Christian character, professional standards of behavior, and to providing a challenging academic atmosphere within a Christian environment. The faculty strives to prepare its graduates for the practice of nursing in a variety of health care settings within a culturally diverse environment, and to provide a foundation for graduate study in nursing.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the nursing program, graduates are expected to:
1. Synthesize and incorporate empirical knowledge from nursing, religion, science, and the humanities into nursing practice.
2. Provide holistic nursing care based on knowledge derived from theory, practice, and research.
3. Utilize a critical thinking process as a basis for providing care for individuals, families, aggregates, and communities of varying cultures and ethnic groups.
4. Collaborate with other health care providers and consumers in promoting health and effecting change in the health care system.
5. Demonstrate accountability for incorporating professional, ethical, moral, and legal aspects into nursing practice.
6. Demonstrate accountability for incorporating independent and self-directed learning as a prerequisite for professional growth.
7. Identify and implement nursing roles designed to meet changing health care needs of society, including health promotion, disease prevention, illness care, restoration, rehabilitation, and health teaching.
8. Exhibit competent clinical judgment, by utilizing evidenced based practice in structured and unstructured settings.
9. Demonstrate the ability to implement appropriate leadership strategies and management competencies as generalists in professional nursing.

The profession of nursing requires practice and application of theoretical concepts. This is accomplished in learning laboratories on campus as well as in various community, primary, secondary, and tertiary health care facilities. Faculty and/or approved registered nurse preceptors employed in these agencies provide supervision. Students will be required to complete background checks and drug screens as required by various clinical agencies.

The program prepares graduates to assume entry level positions in nursing practice and provides a foundation for advanced study in nursing. Graduates of the traditional program are eligible to apply to take the examination for licensure as registered nurses, as set forth in the Texas Occupations Code and Statutes Regulating the Practice of Professional Nursing.

The Department of Nursing does not guarantee that each person admitted to the nursing program will pass all elements of the program or that those graduated from the program with the BSN degree will be able to pass nursing board examinations and/or secure employment as a nurse. Attaining these goals depends upon the degree to which the students diligently apply themselves to their studies and upon the economic forces influencing the health care industry. Neither of these factors is within the control of the ETBU Department of Nursing.
