Georgetown University (School of Nursing & Health Studies)
Welcome to Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS).
We renovated St. Mary’s Hall several years ago. This building is the historic home of NHS on the university’s Hilltop campus. I told the architect that we wanted an “intellectual hum” to pervade our new interior. That vibrant intellectual hum continues here each day.
Our community of learners flourishes in meaningful ways—much as it has since our founding in 1903. Today, NHS houses Departments of Health Systems Administration, Human Science, International Health, and Nursing with strong graduate and undergraduate programs.
NHS faculty members oversee a multimillion-dollar research portfolio. Our faculty pursues diverse areas of inquiry, including HIV/AIDS, childhood development, health care access, and population health.
We also have opened our new Discovery Center. This 3,000-square-foot facility supports education and research among our students and faculty. In addition, we recently launched the Linda and Timothy O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, a timely initiative that we co-founded with our colleagues at Georgetown University Law Center.
ONE MISSION, ONE SCHOOL, FOUR PROGRAMS
Photo of stairwell at St. Mary's HallWho would have guessed that a training program that started in 1903 with seven students would evolve into one of the top ranked educational institutions in the country for its vision and leadership in healthcare education? For more than 100 years, the School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS) at Georgetown University has been educating healthcare leaders to make a difference.
While the tradition of the Jesuit-based value system prevails at NHS, the progression of the School over the last 100 years has been phenomenal. On the cusp of a new millennium, the School faced enormous change. In 1997, an innovative Health Studies major with three concentrations was added to prepare decision makers for a constantly transforming health care environment. In the fall of 2000, the School's name changed from School of Nursing to School of Nursing & Health Studies. And in 2006, the Health Studies concentrations have now become majors that exemplify the mission of the School.
