Viterbo University (School of Nursing)
We are proud of our legacy of excellence and envision a strong future as a premier professional program founded on a liberal arts tradition and rooted in Franciscan values. We have been committed to provide the very best in nursing education for forty years and have graduated over 3000 students. The faculty are all experienced nurses with graduate education in clinical specialty areas of nursing and in education. Five of our faculty have been honored as Viterbo University "Teachers of the Year" and several have been named in "Who's Who in American Education" and in "Who's Who in American Nursing." Nursing as a profession involves using scientific knowledge to facilitate healing. Therefore, we strive to create a learning environment that fosters the development of competent and caring professionals. Within our curriculum, we emphasize health promotion and disease prevention as well as the use of advanced technology to minimize the effects of disease and disability. In our increasingly global and diverse community, we focus on nursing care within the context of family, culture and community. Professional practice is based on scholarship and research and we incorporate these skills into the curriculum. One unique component of our programs is emphasis on ethical decision making. Every course in the nursing curriculum includes both theory and application of ethical principles to insure that nursing graduates can address the complex ethical issues that will confront them in their professional careers and in their daily lives. This values based education is the hallmark of a Viterbo University graduate. MISSION STATEMENT The School of Nursing, while supporting the mission of Viterbo University, educates students to be professionals who will advance the high standards of nursing practice. Further, its faculty seeks to create an educational experience that embraces the pursuit of wisdom and the values of caring, integrity, and commitment as preparation for leadership and service in a dynamic health care environment. VISION The School of Nursing will develop nursing leaders whose competence, caring, and commitment to excellence will empower individuals and communities to achieve the highest level of health and well-being. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE The Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) program is designed to prepare beginning generalist nurses who can provide professional nursing care in a variety of settings. Graduates are prepared to provide health promotion, health maintenance and health restoration to diverse individuals, families and communities. Most students follow a four year plan of study; a five year option is available also. |
