Welcome to the Alverno College School of Nursing! You are entering Alverno’s School of Nursing, a program that began in 1932. Since we began, our focus has been on advancing the learner’s nursing abilities in teaching and clinical practice. As a learner in this curriculum, you are at the heart of the Nursing program and your learning is central to all of our activities.

It's an exciting time to be in nursing, especially at Alverno College. Today’s nurses teach, counsel, conduct health research, help people manage health, illness and disease, and take health care into neighborhoods and homes. Alverno’s curriculum will prepare you for all of these roles and a lifetime of leadership as a caring professional nurse.

Expert Faculty
Alverno’s nursing faculty includes recognized experts in wellness, oncology, geriatrics, critical-care and community health nursing. All nursing faculty members have a thorough background in nursing experience and hold advanced degrees in nursing.

Clinical Experience Guaranteed
If you are entering the Alverno College prelicensure program, you will begin clinical experiences soon after entering Alverno. Through our affiliation with more than 60 hospitals, community and home-health-care agencies, Alverno assures that nursing students will have access to required clinical experiences as you need them. Students in the RN to BSN program do not repeat clinicals.

Accreditation
Alverno is fully accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the only agency devoted exclusively to accrediting baccalaureate and higher degree nursing education. Alverno has been granted the maximum 10-year accreditation period, extending from February 1998 through December 2009. The Division of Nursing is also accredited by the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing. Alverno College maintains continuous accreditation through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Facilities Designed for Nursing Education
Alverno’s Nursing Education Building was designed and built for nursing education. Its facilities include a nursing-practice center, complete with technology to support nursing practice in hospital and community settings. In addition, nursing students learn the natural sciences in state-of-the-art science labs in Alverno’s Teaching, Learning and Technology Center. Computer-assisted assessment resources help you prepare for the nursing licensing examination.

Curriculum
Alverno College’s outcome-oriented curriculum is known nationally and internationally for its innovative focus on you, the learner. In every course, you’ll learn up-to-the-minute information about the course subject while also developing the abilities needed by today’s and tomorrow’s nurse. You’ll learn how to think analytically, be an effective team member, write proficiently for various audiences, speak clearly and “on-your-feet,” and many other important abilities. You’ll also develop the abilities of an effective problem solver and care provider and the capacities to be a responsible world citizen. In brief, Alverno’s nursing faculty’s vision is that your Alverno College education will prepare you for a lifetime of influence.

If you already have an associate degree or diploma in nursing, you will want to know that the RN to BSN curriculum is designed exclusively for you and that it recognizes and builds on your previous nursing education and experience. There is no pre-admission testing and you are in major nursing courses solely with other practicing nurses. You can earn your bachelor’s degree in four semesters.

N 200 TERMINOLOGY FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
In this course, the student learns how terminology used by health-care professionals is constructed, the common roots of medical words, basic terminology of various areas of practice, and general pronunciation rules for medical terms. In this way, she develops and demonstrates her command of, and comfort with, the technical language of health care so as to be proficient in communication with patients and other professionals. Participation is by referral only.

N 250 CREATING YOUR HEALTHY FUTURE: HEALTH AND HEALTH-CARE SYSTEMS
This course assists the student to explore her personal perspectives on health and self-care. She begins to develop critical skills needed to analyze and understand the development of modern health-care systems in the United States and various countries around the world, factors that influence them, roles of various health-care providers, and how diverse individuals and groups are affected by health-care systems.

N 256 PROFESSIONAL NURSING IN THE HEALTH-CARE SYSTEM
The student examines the sociocultural, political, economic, and historical factors that impact the development of the contemporary health-care system. She explores how individuals have access to care and are affected by health-care systems in selected countries. She examines the concept of personal responsibility to promote health and evaluates the frameworks applicable at a personal level, then expands these concepts to the care of individuals and society.

N 260 HEALTH ASSESSMENT – INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY
In this course, the student begins to learn care provider and related nursing roles. She develops the basic skills needed to conduct a comprehensive assessment to measure the health of individuals, families, and communities and to develop a plan of care to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention. The course requires independent practice of physical assessment procedures.

N 265 NUTRITION FOR WELLNESS
Biologic and social research increasingly focuses on the importance of nutrition in promoting health and reducing disease throughout the world. In this course, the student uses knowledge from nutrition science to positively affect the health status of others and herself. She analyzes and evaluates the relevance of consumer information in influencing dietary practices. Since the sources and distribution of food affect the global economy, the student incorporates that knowledge to make decisions regarding the equitable distribution of food supplies.

N 276 VALIDATION OF PRIOR LEARNING NURSING ASSESSMENT (RN STUDENTS ONLY)
In collaboration with an advisor, the student develops a nursing profile, documenting and analyzing her previous learning and nursing experiences. She articulates educational goals and plans for development. The profile initiates a process that results in the creation of a personal and professional nursing portfolio reflective of her Alverno nursing education. This assessment replaces traditional challenge examinations and results in the awarding of 25 semester hours of nursing credit. It has a separate recording and payment fee.

N 300 SERIES: NURSING ELECTIVE
This series of elective courses provides students with opportunities to explore new and emerging trends and issues within nursing.

N 350 PHARMACOLOGY AND NURSING PRACTICE
The student develops comprehensive knowledge of the classifications, uses, effects, and nursing implications of various prescription, over-the-counter, and complementary pharmacologic agents. She explores technologic advances in administering medication. She also evaluates the implications of using the Internet and other technology as sources of pharmacologic information. The student applies principles of ethnopharmacology to consider the effect of various pharmacologic agents on diverse populations.

N 355 NURSING CLINICAL SKILLS AND PROCEDURES
The student learns critical-thinking skills for use in clinical decision making. She also learns clinical and procedural skills through the use of independent learning modules, classroom experiences, and practice and demonstration in the Clinical Nursing Resource Center. This course requires independent practice of identified clinical and procedural skills.

N 360 NURSING THEORY OF HEALTHY POPULATIONS
The student explores the numerous meanings of health, healthy behavior, health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention. She studies models used in nursing healthy populations (individuals, families, communities, and systems). The student evaluates how social policy and politics influence health policy and how these processes effect change within multiple environments. She also considers a variety of cross-cultural issues to help her respond effectively to disparities in the provision of health care.

N 365 NURSING PRACTICE WITH HEALTHY POPULATIONS
In this course, the student applies numerous theories and frameworks to provide nursing care to promote the health of various populations in multiple environments. Clinical practice occurs with a variety of age groups in community-based agencies such as clinics, daycare centers, schools, correctional facilities, churches, work sites, homeless shelters, or meal sites. The student learns nursing roles as she implements initial health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention strategies.

N 366 NURSING PROCESS WITH INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES
This course focuses on the role of the professional nurse within the health-care system as it relates to individuals, families, and communities. The student applies a variety of frameworks to create care plans for selected populations. She incorporates the Determinants of Health and physical assessment as major frameworks to guide her nursing assessments and interventions. She explores evidencebased literature that identifies the coordinator role of care for the professional nurse.

N 370 NURSING THEORY OF ACUTELY AND CHRONICALLY ILL POPULATIONS
The student explores the various meanings that people ascribe to acute and chronic illness and disease and factors that influence those meanings, examines the differences between sick and chronic role theory, applies illness trajectory frameworks, and studies disease management strategies used by nurses to assist individuals and families to move toward a higher level of wellness. She applies cultural competence frameworks to understand how various cultures view and adapt to illness and disease.

N 375 NURSING PRACTICE WITH ACUTELY AND CHRONICALLY ILL POPULATIONS
In this course, the student integrates multiple theories, frameworks, and research findings to provide clinically competent and compassionate nursing care for a variety of individuals and families, from birth to death and across multiple cultures, to maximize quality of life, promote optimum functioning through a course of illness, and, should the need arise, assist with a peaceful death. She explores care-provider roles to set direction for future professional nursing practice. Environments for clinical practice may include various community-based and specialty acute-care units, rehabilitation facilities, or long-term care agencies.

N 391 CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN HEALTH CARE
Through in-depth study of a selected culture, the student gains experience in assessing cultural health-care practices, shared belief systems, and norms. She experiences the relationship between culture and health and begins to expand her cultural competence abilities to enhance her practice of professional nursing. The course concludes with an immersion experience (approximately 10-14 days), during which she observes health-care delivery systems operating in acute, clinic, and community care sites. She participates in care and determines the impact of the host culture’s health-care delivery system in meeting people’s needs within the cachement/service area.

N 395 CONTEMPORARY NURSING TOPICS: VARIED FOCI
This course is designed as a “topics” course to allow the exploration of a variety of topics related to the current practice of professional nursing. The course content complements essential concepts included in the nursing curriculum, and may include such topics as aging, genetics, and corrections nursing.

N 450 NURSING THEORY OF VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
The focus of this course is on developing the student’s abilities to work with individuals, families, groups, and communities to improve the health of vulnerable populations through health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention activities. Using multiple theories and advancing self-assessment skills, the student refines her abilities in designing, managing, and coordinating care for vulnerable populations through diverse class activities and the design and implementation of a health promotion program or a health fair for a selected community.

N 455 NURSING PRACTICE WITH VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
In this course, the student applies various theories and frameworks in multiple clinical environments to improve the quality of life and reduce health disparities for individuals, groups, communities, and systems. With faculty guidance and using nursing research findings, she explores community partnerships to establish health promotion goals and to design and implement programs for communities, groups, and systems. Environments for clinical practice may include home-care agencies, homeless shelters, hospitals, church parishes, centers for domestic violence, or insurance/case management settings.

N 456 NURSING THEORY AND PRACTICE WITH VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
The student focuses her professional role behaviors on becoming a designer, manager, and coordinator of care for vulnerable populations. She works with groups and communities to improve the health of vulnerable populations through health-promotion, risk-reduction, and disease-prevention activities. She draws on a variety of theories and frameworks, and applies her knowledge of the multiple determinants of health and of cultural competence frameworks learned in previous courses.

N 460 LEADERSHIP FOR CHANGE IN HEALTH CARE
The student consolidates her leadership and management abilities to support her professional role in society in this course. She applies frameworks, concepts, and models of leadership, management, change theory, health policy making, and budgeting to organize and direct client populations and health-care providers. She consciously uses advanced selfassessment processes to develop an effective leadership style and to facilitate achievement of organizational and career goals.

N 465 NURSING RESEARCH
The student builds upon her prior knowledge of the scientific method, explores qualitative and quantitative nursing research methods, completes a rigorous research critique, assesses the reliability and validity of health-related publications and Internet resources, explores in depth a clinical nursing research question of her own choosing, and examines the ethics of research activities, especially in relation to established evidence-based practice guidelines. Course activities conclude with a research day symposium in which students conduct a formal research poster presentation.

PROFESSIONAL NURSING INTERNSHIP
In this final integrating course, the student participates in internships with a preceptor that may be in the same or in different settings. During the internship, she pursues knowledge and experience in an area of interest by immersing herself in the role of the professional nurse under the supervision of an agency registered nurse preceptor, based on the preceptor’s work schedule. She takes on the role of the professional nurse to the degree that facility policy allows, and observes and evaluates organizational culture and nursing care.

N 475 PROFESSIONAL NURSING PORTFOLIO
This capstone course, which occurs in the student’s final semester, provides the student with an opportunity to explore her personal development of excellence and power in her nursing practice. Using principles of self-assessment, she analytically reviews her prior classroom and clinical work in order to compile a professional portfolio within the Diagnostic Digital Portfolio (DDP).

N 476 PROFESSIONAL NURSING LEADERSHIP SEMINAR: POLICY AND PRACTICE
The student focuses on the development of leadership and management abilities as she optimizes her professional role in society. She applies frameworks, concepts, and models of leadership, management, change theory, and health-policy making. In organizing and directing client populations and health-care providers, she uses accepted guidelines to manage budgets and information. She purposefully develops an effective leadership style to facilitate achievement of health-care and career goals.
