Arizona State University (College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation)

From a program that graduated only six people in 1960, the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation has grown to include more than 7,400 graduates. The college has evolved from a small baccalaureate program to the largest supplier of nurses in Arizona with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science nursing degrees, and is the only college in the state offering a Doctor of Nursing Science degree. In addition, ASU's College of Nursing is offering a Master of Healthcare Innovation, the first of its kind in the nation.

The faculty in the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation are committed to preparing nurses for compassionate and competent nursing practice, leadership in service to the community and the nursing profession, and who value lifelong personal growth. Students learn from experts in pediatrics, women's health, medical/surgical, adult health, psychiatric/mental health and community health nursing. The college's outstanding faculty has received numerous awards in teaching, service, and research, as well as recognition at the state and national levels of the profession.

The college manages five nonprofit nurse-managed Academic Nursing Centers: ASU Health Center at the Downtown Phoenix Campus, Breaking the Cycle Community Health Care, Community Health Services Clinic, Escalante Health Center and North Tempe Health Center. These nationally recognized centers give nurses the opportunity to move to the forefront of healthcare, while providing services to the underserved and underinsured, and educating ASU’s nursing students in the process.

Human Anatomy and Physiology I:
Structure and dynamics of the human mechanism.

Human Anatomy and Physiology II:
Continuation of Human Anatomy and Physiology I.

Human Development:
Lifespan development from conception through adulthood, with emphasis on family influences. Recognition of individuality within the universal pattern of development.

Introductory Chemistry:
Elements of general chemistry. Adapted to the needs of students in nursing and kinesiology and those preparing for general chemistry. Recommended for General Studies credit.

First Year Composition:
Discovers, organizes, and develops ideas in relation to the writer's purpose, subject, and audience. Emphasizes modes of written discourse and effective use of rhetorical principles.

First Year Composition:
Critical reading and writing; emphasizes strategies of academic discourse. Research paper required.

Clinical Healthcare Ethics:
Healthcare ethics emphasizing analysis and ethical decision making at clinical and health policy levels for healthcare professionals.

Healthcare Organizations:
Overview of United States healthcare delivery systems; financing, health policy, basic principles of budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, and resource management.

Culture and Health
Cultures of diverse groups and health/illness. Cross-cultural communication, awareness of own cultural influences, indigenous and alternative healing practices.

Human Pathophysiology
Chemical, biologic, biochemical, and psychological processes used in study of structural and functional alterations in health with selected therapeutics.

College Mathematics:
Applies basic college-level mathematics to real-life problems.

Basic course for students, emphasizing general principles; role of microorganisms in health, ecology, and applied fields. May not be used for Microbiology major credit unless a diagnostic test is passed.

Microbiology Laboratory:
Principles and lab techniques used in identifying and handling microorganisms.

Human Nutrition:
Principles of human nutrition. Emphasizes nutrient metabolism and the relationships between diet and disease.

Principles of Sound Reasoning
Fallacies, validity, and soundness of arguments. May include syllogistic, elementary symbolic, inductive logic, and scientific method.

Introduction to Psychology:
Major areas of theory and research in psychology. Requires participation in department-sponsored research or an educationally equivalent alternative activity.

Concepts related to health integrity with focus on individual client

Pharmacology in Nursing:
Foundations of pharmacological interventions.

Professional Development I:
Introduces professional nursing roles and responsibilities.

Nursing Practice I:
Applies health assessment, nursing process, and basic skills to promote and maintain health integrity of individual clients. Lab, clinical experience.

Theory II: Health Integrity and Alterations:
Concepts related to selected alterations in health integrity with focus on individuals, families, and groups.

Professional Development II: Nursing Research
Introduces concepts and issues in nursing research. Emphasizes quantitative and qualitative research processes, examination of nursing research literature.

Nursing Practice II:
Applies nursing process with selected individuals, families, and groups experiencing alterations in health integrity. Lab, clinical experience.

Professional Development III: The Art of Nursing:
Explores the aesthetic, ethical, and personal patterns of knowing in nursing.

Theory III: Health Integrity and Alterations:
Concepts related to health integrity and alterations with focus on individuals, families, groups, aggregates, and communities.

Nursing Practice III:
Lab, clinical experiences.

Theory IV: Health Integrity and Alterations:
Advanced concepts related to health integrity and alterations in that integrity, with focus on selected client populations.

Theory V: Leadership and Management:
Selected theories and concepts of organizations, management, leadership with focus on nursing management and leadership in healthcare organizations.

Professional Development IV:
Focuses on role transition to professional nursing.

Nursing Practice IV:
Capstone course with focus on synthesis and application of patterns of knowing and leadership, management concepts in collaborative nursing practice. Lab, clinical experiences.
