Beebe School of Nursing




Beebe School of Nursing is a diploma nursing program located at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware. Since its inception in 1921, the School has held a strong tradition of academic excellence and extensive clinical experience in providing quality nursing education.

Beebe offers a comprehensive NLNAC accredited nursing curriculum that prepares graduates for the demands of a diverse healthcare profession. The two-year day curriculum is presented in two 17-week semesters per year. The evening/weekend curriculum is presented in two or three blocks per level and is completed in a three-year time frame. A planned orientation occurs prior to enrollment.

The prerequisite courses provide a strong academic foundation in the basic sciences and humanities. These courses may be taken through Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus, with registration facilitated through Beebe School of Nursing or, if the student chooses, from a college near their home. In addition, a Nursing Assistant course within two years of enrollment or current certification as a nursing assistant is required. When students have successfully completed the prerequisite courses, they will then start the first year/level of nursing education at Beebe School of Nursing.

Clinical experience for students begins in the prerequisite Nursing Assistant course. The first-year/level nursing courses at Beebe School of Nursing provide intense clinical experiences in both inpatient care areas and outpatient settings that increase and progress through a variety of learning opportunities. Local, state, and regional community facilities are used to provide diversified clinical experiences in nursing management and acute, critical, community, transitional, and rehabilitative care. In addition to Foundations of Nursing and Nursing Care of Adults, the second year/level of the curriculum includes Nursing Care of Special Populations and Advanced Concepts of Nursing. The diploma in nursing is awarded at the completion of the Nursing Curriculum. This qualifies the graduate to be eligible for NCLEX (nursing) licensure.

With completion of the prerequisite courses, the nursing diploma curriculum at Beebe School of Nursing, and three additional courses—English II, Macroeconomics, and Oral Communications—the student will have completed 48 credits of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Lower Division Requirements for Wilmington College. Beebe School of Nursing has an articulation agreement and a specific curriculum plan with Wilmington College to facilitate BSN completion with one additional year of study.

PHILOSOPHY

Nursing is a dynamic process based on a theoretical body of knowledge evolving from the biological, behavioral, and social sciences. Nursing has independent and collaborative functions within the healthcare system to promote, maintain, and restore individual, family, and community health and safety. Each individual is culturally diverse, has dignity and worth, and continuously interacts with the environment and society. Each person is responsible for his or her own well-being with rights and responsibilities. An individual has the right to choose his or her own lifestyle. Nursing respects the right of individuals.

Health is a value of man manifested as a dynamic state of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It is an individually perceived state on a continuum from optimal health to death.

Learning is a continuous interactive process that stimulates personal and professional growth and results in desired behavioral changes. Nursing education provides planned experiences for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values. Learning is a cooperative process which requires active participation by the student with guidance and direction from the faculty. Learning experiences progress from basic nursing care to complex nursing care in a variety of settings to develop competency in nursing practice with a commitment to quality. The concepts of simple to complex and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Basic Human Needs provide the framework for the integration of the curriculum threads of:

The School has the responsibility to prepare graduates who can function as members of the healthcare team at the entry level of nursing practice with critical-thinking skills and the ability to provide safe, quality, and financially responsible care to patients in acute, long-term, and community-based healthcare settings. The faculty accepts responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating a curriculum responsive to the changing needs of society, which prepares the graduate for entry into professional practice in an ever-changing and complex healthcare society. The School utilizes community resources to prepare the graduate nurse who can meet the healthcare needs of the community. The graduate nurse will be accountable and responsible to provide comprehensive care with efficient use of resources that meets or exceeds prescribed standards and expectations. The graduate is expected to promote the professional standards of nursing and practice with the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality. The School encourages students to view learning as a lifelong process, facilitates educational mobility, and supports participation by the faculty and students in professional and community activities.

ROUNDATIONS OF NURSING
Foundations of Nursing provides knowledge essential to the fundamental nursing care of Medical-Surgical patients which utilizes previously learned content from related courses. Discussion of the trends influencing nursing practice, ethics of patient care, and legal considerations in health care are introduced. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process as the foundation of nursing practice. Communication principles and physical, mental health, and diagnostic assessments are introduced and developed throughout the course. The student identifies learning needs of individuals and families and initiates appropriate health teaching. Measures to promote comfort, rest, and sleep along with infection control principles are introduced and incorporated into clinical experiences. Pharmacological principles are studied which provide information necessary for safe administration of medications. The care of the patient through all phases of the perioperative experience is presented. The patient experiencing disturbances of the immunological, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems along with related nursing care and therapeutic measures are addressed. Theory and skills are reinforced through concurrent clinical laboratory experiences in the simulation laboratory and a variety of health care settings. Learning takes place by direct involvement and active participation in the application of nursing care to assigned patients.

RURSING CARE OF ADULTS
Nursing Care of Adults is the comprehensive approach to care of the adult patient experiencing disturbances of the cardiovascular, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, gastrointestinal, neurosensory, and integumentary systems. Utilizing the nursing process as a framework, the pharmacological, dietary, social, economic, and psychological needs of the patient and family are integrated throughout the course. Physical assessment, medical-surgical clinical skills, and critical thinking are enhanced. Clinical opportunities progress from structured classroom laboratories into acute care, extended care, and community assignments. Teaching / learning needs are identified and emphasis is placed on patient, family, and community education to enhance wellness.

RURSING CARE OF SPECIAL POPULATIONS
Nursing Care of Special Populations is a comprehensive approach to providing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual care to individuals, families, and groups throughout their life span. The childbearing and child-rearing component focuses on the application of the nursing process and utilization of critical thinking skills to deliver care to women, children, and their families. The psychosocial adjustments of the aging component focuses on maintaining the health of the older population and utilizing the nursing process to deliver care when they experience alterations in health. The mental health component focuses on promoting an understanding of mental health concepts as they apply to all levels of the health/illness continuum. Application of knowledge of psychodynamics, treatment modalities, and therapeutic interventions are utilized to foster optimal wellness in individuals, families, and groups experiencing alterations in mental health. Principles of growth and development, pharmacology, nutrition, rehabilitation, therapeutic communication, group process, and interviewing skills are integrated throughout the course. A variety of clinical experiences in acute care and community settings allow the student to utilize the nursing process and critical thinking skills to care for individuals with special needs.

RDVANCED CONCEPTS OF NURSING
Advanced Concepts of Nursing is a study of the problems encountered by persons affected by medical and/or surgical conditions in acute care, critical care, and emergency settings. The course facilitates the individual’s role transition from student to registered nurse. Concepts, theories, and application of leadership and management modalities are incorporated. Current trends in health care delivery, legislation, ethics, and employment are discussed. Emphasis is placed on utilization of the nursing process in situations in which critical thinking, decision making, rapid assessment, and interventions are crucial. An overview of nursing research is presented as a means to stimulate critical thinking with emphasis on relating research to clinical practice. A supplemental component of the planned learning experience is an elective observational experience in a clinical environment selected by the student. Career selection, career mobility, and the nurse’s responsibility for continued professional growth are discussed.
