Bowling Green State University (School of Nursing - College of Health and Human Services)




Bowling Green State University's College of Health and Human Services is devoted exclusively to academic programs in health and human services. Programs are accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Council on Education for Public Health, the Council on Rehabilitation Counseling, and the Council on Social Work Education.

Nursing is a rewarding and challenging profession that incorporates theory, complex technology and caring. Baccalaureate nursing graduates provide research/theory based nursing care to healthy and ill individuals, families and communities in diverse health care settings including clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and outpatient facilities. These graduates also are prepared for advanced study at the master's degree level.

The consortium of the Medical University of Ohio, The University of Toledo (UT) and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) provides an innovative and unique Baccalaureate Nursing Program. This is a chance to combine the best of both worlds - the excitement of college life coupled with the challenge of a clinical setting and stimulating health science center. Students choose the university (BGSU or UT) that best meets their needs. Undergraduate students take general education, liberal arts and sciences at UT or BGSU, then attend Medical University as junior and senior students for nursing courses and clinical experiences. The Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is awarded by the respective university.

Medical University of Ohio is an academic health science center located in a residential area of south Toledo. Approximately 1,800 nursing, health sciences, graduate and medical students are enrolled.

Bowling Green State University, with 18,500 students on main campus, is located in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The University of Toledo, with about 19,000 students, is located in a residential area of Toledo, Ohio.

By taking advantage of the exceptional advising services and academic/clinical learning opportunities available, graduates enjoy increased professional autonomy and career mobility, new levels of competence and confidence, and thorough preparation to meet the demands of a changing health care system. A Departmental Honors Program is available in Nursing.

The College of Nursing has full approval of the Ohio Board of Nursing and is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The Undergraduate Nursing Program has two ways to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The Basic program is for students entering the nursing profession. The RN/BSN program is for students who are associate degree or diploma graduates and are already licensed as registered nurses.

ORIENTATION TO NURSING
Assists freshmen in choosing nursing as major and career goal; professional nurse's role, history of nursing, future trends in relation to current U.S. health care delivery system.

NURSING AGENCY I: CONCEPTS
Provides foundational knowledge of nursing theory, professional concepts, therapeutic communication and applied interventions. Incorporates laboratory experience with simulated clients.

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Focus on holistic model integrating technology, scientific knowledge and alternative/complementary caring modalities into basic and advanced practices of nursing.

NURSING CARE OF THE TERMINALLY ILL: ISSUES IN PALLIATIVE CARE
Theory course focuses on concepts, knowledge and skills necessary to provide holistic nursing care to individuals and their significant others who are affected by a terminal illness.

NURSING AGENCY II: ASSESSMENT
Provides for acquisition of knowledge and development of skill in comprehensive nursing assessment.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING I
Care of adults with common nursing problems using Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing.

GERONTOLOGICAL NURSING
Focus on theories and concepts of aging and health, based on Universal Self-Care Requisites from Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing.

CONCEPTS OF PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Basic science of pathophysiology of disease across the life span. Prepares for critical thinking in application of concepts to nursing practice.

CONCEPTS OF NURSING PHARMACOLOGY
Fundamental pharmacologic principles of physiological response to drugs, therapeutic outcomes, and potential drug interactions. Prepares for critical thinking in application of pharmacotherapy principles to nursing.

NURSING AGENCY III: INTERVENTIONS
Application of principles of nursing interventions in the learning lab on simulated clients.

WOMEN'S HEALTH NURSING
Provides didactic and clinical opportunities relevant to care of women across lifespan. Various clinical settings used in application of nursing system with a self-care framework.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Psychosocial influences on self-care agency are presented within context of culturally competent nursing care. Concepts are interpreted within self-care deficit theory and applied in clinical experience.

PARENT-CHILD NURSING:
Nursing care of infants, children, and adolescents within families and groups using Orem's Self Care Deficit Theory of Nursing. Clinical experiences in wellness, acute, and chronic care settings.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING:
Focuses on design and implementation of nursing care for aggregates and communities. Individual and family care is provided within context of population health.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN NURSING
Principles and theories of management and leadership as a basis for provision of nursing care.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING II
Design and implementation of nursing systems for the adult population with complex health states. Includes application of nursing leadership principles in clinical settings.

ONCOLOGY NURSING
Focuses on concepts, knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals who have cancer and their families. Emphasizes helping people to care for themselves throughout their illness.

PERIOPERATIVE NURSING CARE
Clinical elective with focus on the practice of perioperative nursing.

NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Focus on principles of management and leadership for the baccalaureate prepared nurse. Provision of professional care in a variety of settings.

RESEARCH INQUIRY I
Students will critically evaluate published research for clinical relevance, identify a research problem, select a conceptual framework, reviewed selected literature, and prepare a quantitative or qualitative research proposal.

ADVANCED PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Overview of pathologic processes that influence the development of disease in humans. Includes discussion of normal function and the impact of disease on health.

ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Focuses on specialty specific comprehensive and problem focused advanced patient assessment. Specialty laboratory practice and supervision are required.

HEALTH CARE ASPECTS OF HUMAN SEXUALITY
Spring. Impact on health care of selected components of human sexuality. Aspects include sexual assessment, changes during the life span and disturbances in sexuality due to health conditions.

THEORETICAL AND PROFESSIONAL FOUNDATIONS IN NURSING
Focus on RN student's transition to professional higher education and theory based on practice. Current professional issues are explored. Political, socioeconomic, ethical and legal issues are critically examined and discussed.

INTERPERSONAL STRATEGIES IN NURSING OF OLDER ADULTS
Focus on application of self-care deficit theory of nursing and health maintenance for older individuals within the family and environment.

POPULATION FOCUSED CARE
Focuses on the design and implementation of nursing care for aggregates and communities. Individual and family care is provided within the context of population focused care.

APPLIED NURSING RESEARCH
Emphasizes all phases of the research process. Analysis and application of research strategies for the professional nurse.

APPLIED PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY
Concepts of pathophysiology and pharmacology. Prepares for critical thinking in application of concepts to nursing practice.

APPLIED HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Nursing application of health history, physical and psychosocial assessment skills across the lifespan.

PROFESSIONAL NURSING COMPETENCY
This course provides an overview of NLCEX and practice in the application of knowledge required for the professional nursing examination.

THEORIES OF ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS
Research and treatment related to addictive behaviors are critiqued. Nursing interventions specific for addicted persons are evaluated. Implications of legal/social/health policies on services for this population are explored.

CRITICAL CARE NURSING
Clinical elective with focus on design and implementation of partially and wholly compensatory nursing systems for clients with critical health states.

INDEPENDENT STUDY IN NURSING
Research or project designed with guidance of a faculty member. Open to senior students with consent of a faculty member.

PERINATAL NURSING
Clinical elective with focus on advanced issues in women's and neonatal health care.

NURSING RESEARCH
Introduction to concepts, issues, and processes in nursing research. Emphasis on critical analysis and evaluation of published research for nursing practice and research role of baccalaureate nurse.
