SCHOOL GOALS
The goals of the Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing are to prepare the graduate to:
* Obtain licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse through successful completion of the NCLEX-RN Examination.
* Function as a beginning practitioner of nursing in acute, intermediate, long term, and ambulatory health care settings.
* Utilize the nursing process as the foundation for the delivery of health care to the individual, family, and community.
* Act in a self-directed manner in pursuit of continuing education, and in personal and professional growth.
* Demonstrate responsibility as a contributing member of the community.
During the first year, students take basic nursing courses and attend Central Virginia Community College for selected fundamental courses including biology and behavioral sciences. Courses in the various specialty areas of nursing are taught during the second and third years. Upon completion of the three-year program, the graduate is prepared to practice with clinical competence in a variety of settings, and is eligible to file an application to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
The School of Nursing was established in 1912 to meet a community need for professional nurses in Lynchburg and the surrounding areas. Through the years, the school expanded its facilities and strengthened the curriculum to keep pace with advancements in nursing science and education.

The nursing school is located next to Lynchburg General Hospital. Lynchburg General Hospital specializes in emergency and critical care services, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery and orthopedics. The hospital is part of Centra Health, a locally owned health care system. Also part of the system is Virginia Baptist Hospital, which emphasizes women and children's services, mental health and chemical dependency treatment, and outpatient services. Students gain clinical experience at both hospitals as well as selected community agencies.
