City College - Fort Lauderdale (Nursing Program)




The College is located at 2000 W. Commercial Boulevard. The classrooms, labs, and administrative offices occupy 28,500 square feet of an air - conditioned building. Parking is available to students. Classrooms are intentionally designed to limit the number of students per room so that maximum personal attention can be given to each student. Fort Lauderdale is world-renowned for the beauty in its beaches and in its people. Its varied business sites, along with those in Miami, offer the student numerous opportunities in the working world.

Instruction is enhanced through the use of sophisticated office machines and equipment. Computer courses are taught on Intel based Computers. Keyboarding skills are taught on IBM Compatibles. In addition, the college teaches the use of transcribers. Special laboratory rooms have been developed to simulate actual working conditions for the Medical Assisting, EMS, Electronics and Broadcasting students. Private Investigator students train with 35mm cameras and video camcorders.

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

The Nursing Program is a 7 term curriculum that prepares the student to take the NCLEX-RN examination upon completion. Upon passing this examination, Registered Nurses will become an integral member of the health care team in various clinical settings. The settings in nursing practice vary from neonatal to geriatric specialties. The Registered nurse will enjoy a rewarding career in the health care industry while improving the quality of life and health of their communities

The City College Nursing Program will incorporate holistic nursing concepts and principles to guide self and others towards wellness-oriented choices for health improvement of society. The student will learn to use critical thinking skills and advanced nursing techniques and skills to provide quality compassionate nursing care. Within this program, students have the opportunity to gain hands on experiences within many of the community medical centers and acute care hospitals. The program combines theory, skills and clinical practices which are guided by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in various clinical specialties. The focus of this program is to prepare the student for a successful career as a Registered Nurse within the health care industry.

NURSING I - FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING SKILL LAB
Nursing Skills Lab I provides an introduction to basic technical nursing skill sets that are either utilized or delegated by the nurse to implement the nursing process. The lab is a supportive and supervised environment for students to gain confidence and competence while practicing basic client care skills.

NURSING I - FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING
This course considers the normal foundations of nursing that form the model or template for the application of critical thinking processes in the presence of client self care or self care limitations. Areas discussed include: assessment, diagnostic resources, accountability through documentation and foundational concepts for normal human functioning.

NURSING I – FUNDAMENTALS CLINICAL LAB
Nursing I Clinical provides selected client experiences in a variety of settings that assist the students to integrate content from the classroom and college skills lab. The focus is on assessment, use of basic nursing skills, and wellness.

NURSING II - BEGINNING MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING SKILLS LAB
Nursing Skills Lab II provides knowledge and practice for the beginning medical/ surgical technical nursing skills sets that are either utilized or delegated by the nurse to implement the nursing process. The lab is a supportive and supervised environment for students to gain confidence and competence while practicing basic medical/surgical client care skills.

NURSING III - MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING SKILL LAB
Nursing Skills Lab III builds on the knowledge and practice for beginning medical/ surgical technical nursing skill sets to acquire complex technical skills used by the nurse to implement the nursing process for clients with transitional physical or mental limitations. The lab is a supportive and supervised environment for students to gain confidence and competence while practicing medical/surgical skills for clients who are facing altered states of wellness and self care adjustment.

CONCEPTS OF NURSING PRACTICE
The Concepts of Nursing Practice introduces nursing as a holistic and caring profession. Through a study of historical nursing perspectives, Nightingale through contemporary holistics, the theory of Dorothea Orem will be introduced as a method of organizing nursing thought. Other concepts pertaining to values, professional behavior, ethical considerations and healthcare delivery systems will be explored. This conceptual process will provide a foundation for understanding the relationships, interactions and influences that exist within the nursing environment and the healthcare world. Students will have the opportunity, through the creation of “learning environments,” to identify their own learning styles and begin to create an environment of positive learning and personal wellness.

PHARMACOLOGY & NURSING PRACTICE
Pharmacology and Nursing Practice introduces the beginning level nursing student to pharmacotherapeutic concepts as they are applied to nursing practice. The major drug classifications are discussed in accordance with concepts of human functioning. For each classification students will consider data collection, dosage/administration, evaluating and promoting therapeutic effects, minimizing adverse effects and interactions, managing toxicity and client education.

NURSING II - BEGINNING MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING
This course considers stressors that affect an individual’s level of wellness by imposing transitional self care physical and/or mental limitations. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing interventions (ADN) will be further explored and expanded with the use of the detailed nursing process. Selected stressors include, but are not limited to, commonly occurring health limitations that lead to therapeutic self care demand(s).

NURSING II - BEGINNING MEDICAL/SURGICAL CLINICAL LAB
Nursing II Clinical provides selected client experiences in a variety of settings that assist the student to integrate content from the classroom and college skills lab. The focus is on beginning medical/surgical technical skill sets that are utilized or delegated by the nurse to implement the nursing process for clients with commonly occurring health limitations that lead to therapeutic self care demands.

NURSING III - MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING
This course considers stressors that affect an individual’s level of wellness by imposing transitional self care, physical and/or mental limitations. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing interventions (ADN) will be used and practiced in conjunction with the nursing process. Selected stressors include, but are not limited to, those causing an altered state of wellness that requires adjustments to self care and a different state of wellness.

NURSING III - MEDICAL/SURGICAL CLINICAL LAB
Nursing III Clinical provides selected client experiences in a variety of settings that assist the student to integrate content from the classroom and college skills lab. Although the critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing assessment (ADN) are encouraged, the focus is on planning nursing care and complex medical/surgical technical skill sets that are utilized by the nurse to implement the nursing process. The clients are experiencing an altered state of wellness that requires adjustments to self care demands and a change in their definition of wellness.

NURSING V - CHILD CARE NURSING
Child Care Nursing considers the stressors that affect an individual child’s level of wellness by imposing transitional or permanent self care physical, social, developmental and/or emotional limitations. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC), initial nursing interventions (ADN), the detailed nursing process and developmental assessments will be used to comprehensively explore nursing care for children and their families. Selected common stressors include those that create a therapeutic self care demand(s) requiring the child and/or his family to seek partnering.

NURSING V - CHILD CARE NURSING CLINICAL
Child Care Nursing Clinical provides selected experiences in pediatric settings that assist the student to integrate content from the classroom with the care of children. The focus is the implementation of the holistic nursing process, with accompanying technical skill sets, for children with common occurring health limitations. These limitations lead to therapeutic self-care demands that require partnering and may lead to an altered state of wellness. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC), and initial assessment will be used to provide comprehensive nursing care to children and their families.

NURSING VI - MATERNAL/CHILD HEALTH NURSING
Maternal/Child Health nursing considers the child-bearing family’s level of wellness when self care limitations imposed by pregnancy and childbirth engage individuals in change. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC), initial nursing interventions (ADN), the detailed nursing process and developmental assessments will be used to provide comprehensive, holistic nursing care to the woman and her developing family. During pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum, common normal stressors and selected high risk challenges that create therapeutic self care demand(s) which require partnering will be considered.

NURSING VI - MATERNAL/CHILD HEALTH NURSING CLINICAL
The Maternal/Child Health nursing clinical provides selected experiences in obstetric settings that assist the student to integrate content from the classroom with the nursing care of child-bearing women and their families. The focus of nursing care and accompanying technical skill sets are utilized by the student to implement the nursing process for women with normal and selected stressors that lead to therapeutic self care demands that require partnering. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC), initial nursing interventions (ADN), a detailed nursing process and developmental assessments will be used to provide comprehensive nursing care to women and their families. Clinical experiences will occur in out-patient clinics, physician’s offices, health department clinics, birthing centers and hospitals.

NURSING IV - MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
This course considers stressors that affect an individual’s level of wellness by imposing transitional self care mental and/or social limitations. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing interventions (ADN) will be explored with the use of the detailed nursing process. Selected stressors include, but are not limited to, commonly occurring mental health limitations that lead to therapeutic self care demand(s) that require partnering.

NURSING IV - MENTAL HEALTH CLINICAL LAB
Nursing IV Clinical provides selected client experiences in mental health settings that assist the students to integrate content from the classroom with client care. The client care focus and accompanying technical skill sets are utilized by the student to implement the nursing process for clients with commonly occurring mental health limitations that lead to therapeutic self care demands that require partnering.

NURSING VII - CRITICAL CARE NURSING CONCEPTS
This course considers the medical complexity and highly technical skills required by today’s nurse for care of an individual’s body-mind-spirit. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing interventions (ADN) will be used and practiced in conjunction with the nursing process. Medical/surgical nursing care concepts are revisited in the context of concepts of critical care nursing. Selected stressors include, but are not limited to, those causing an altered state of wellness that requires complex adjustments to self care and a resulting difference in one’s state of wellness.

NURSING VII - CRITICAL CARE NURSING CLINICAL
This course provides experiences in selected critical care clinical settings to assist the student with the integration of critical care classroom content into client care. The critical thinking models for human functioning (MORCC) and initial nursing interventions (ADN) will be used and practiced in conjunction with the nursing process. Medical/surgical nursing care concepts are revisited in the context of clinical complexity for critical care nursing. Selected stressors include, but are not limited to, those causing an altered state of wellness that requires therapeutic self-care adjustments with a resulting change in one-state of wellness.

NURSING SEMINAR
This seminar builds on the knowledge and skills obtained in the nursing curriculum and integrates the theory of organizational development and culture, management styles and beginning leadership skills into the practice of nursing. The course provides the foundations for independent practice by assisting the student to prepare for employment as a registered nurse.

NURSING PRECEPTORSHIP
The nursing preceptorship builds on the knowledge and skills obtained in the nursing curriculum and integrates the theory of organizational development and culture, management styles and beginning leadership skills into the clinical practice of nursing. The course provides the foundations for independent clinical practice by assisting the student to prepare for employment as a registered nurse. Students work with an assigned clinical preceptor. Preceptors directly mentor the student throughout the course. At completion, the student is expected to be confident and competent in handling all aspects of the average client load for that agency.
