THE UNIVERSITY

Concordia University was founded in 1881 as a school of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and officially became a university on August 27, 1989. Concordia is on of twelve colleges and seminaries maintained by The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In addition to its traditional focus on teacher training (teacher supply for Lutheran parochial schools, lay ministry/preseminary education), innovative programs in the liberal arts, business, nursing, and adult education have been added. A master's program was established in 1988.

Since the move to Mequon in 1983, Concordia has become the fastest-growing Lutheran college in the country, growing from 784 students to 4,541 to date. It is a four-year, NCA-accredited, coeducational, liberal arts school offering thirty-five majors of study.

THE NURSING DIVISION

Concordia University Wisconsin has offered a baccalaureate degree in nursing since 1982. The National League for Nursing made its initial visit to Concordia and granted NLN accreditation to the nursing program in 1987. Accreditation was granted in 1996 for eight years. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing track for registered nurses was developed, and in May 1991, the first RN to B.S.N. completion students graduated. The first LPN graduated as a graduate nurse in summer 1995. In fall 1995, Concordia began a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree program. The M.S.N. program graduated its first class in May 1998.

The B.S.N. completion track, the LPN to RN track, and the traditional generic track of nursing are rooted in the same philosophy. The conceptual framework that is utilized is the Betty Neuman Systems Model. The delivery of the courses differs in that the B.S.N. completion program was designed for the adult learner. Modular courses are delivered in more than three to seven weeks' time during day and evening hours to facilitate the working adult. The delivery of the traditional course content is typically more than a semester's length.

The CUW faculty members are published and recognized leaders in their field of expertise. Because of a positive student-faculty member ratio, faculty members are able to know each student as a person.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

The curriculum in nursing prepares individuals for a beginning practice of professional nursing and is built around the core curriculum and supplemental courses that facilitate the development of a professional nurse. Students have an opportunity to gain a basis of knowledge from the liberal arts curriculum. The traditional student's nursing experience begins with on-campus instruction in both the classroom and nursing laboratory. The first learning experience with patients begins in the sophomore year. Throughout the program, students are introduced to nursing experiences in both hospitals and community agencies. In their senior year, nursing students can take a global education class during Concordia's Winterim and experience life in another country. During the past two Winterim's, students spent seven days in Costa Rica. Upon graduation, the students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam administered by the State Board of Nursing.

LPNs to RNs are admitted to the University as students who have completed one year of the nursing program. Depending upon how classes are scheduled, it may be possible to complete the program in three academic years or less.

The RN seeking a baccalaureate degree is offered a curriculum focusing on the liberal arts and nursing. Classes are offered emphasizing adult education principles, with flexible scheduling in the late afternoons, evenings, and a few day offerings.

The Parish Nurse is the visible symbol of a congregation's pursuit of wellness, which is people's faith response to Jesus Christ, driven by the Holy Spirit. This holistic health program is based on the belief that health is growth toward well-being of body, soul, mind, and relationships. The Parish Nurse is available to all age levels of the congregation and becomes part of the ministry team, which also includes the pastor and members of the congregation.

The M.S.N. program is designed for nurses seeking preparation for advanced practice nursing as nurse practitioners or gerontological family nurse practitioners. Nurses from all nationally accredited basic nursing programs are eligible to apply. Both an on-campus and a long-distance (50 miles or more from CUW) course of study are available. The first class graduated in May 1998. This program's five-year accreditation is pending the NLN's Board of Review's Meeting in January 1999.

The program's biggest plus is its emphasis on a Christian response in nursing and respect for human life. The professional faculty provides individualized attention and emphasizes "Excellence in Christian Education."

PROFESSIONAL CORE FOUNDATIONS
This course identifies the philosophical basis, conceptual framework and responsibilities of the professional nurse while assisting students to formalize their decision to study professional nursing.

PROFESSIONAL CORE FOUNDATIONS
Practicum introduces the student to preprofessional technical skills utilized in nursing.

BASICS OF STATISTICS
This course studies the basic methods of sampling and interpreting data probability, the normal distribution, correlation, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. 3 credit hours

ALTERATION IN WELLNESS I
Studies variances from wellness in humans and includes general mechanisms of disease and the system’s response to stressors. In addition the study will include the principles of human pharmacology including chemical/biochemical, physiological effects of drugs commonly used as therapeutic agents.

ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS I
Practicum provides guided clinical experience correlated with theoretical content of Contemporary Nursing II.

WELLNESS ASSESSMENT
Identifies nursing’s role in assessing deviations from wellness and the way in which individuals maintain lines of defense. Nursing laboratory work required.

NURSING AND THE NEUMAN MODEL
This course demonstrates the incorporation of Betty Neuman’s conceptual framework within the nursing process.

ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS II
Focuses on the lines of defense and nursing preventions when assisting adults requiring medical/surgical interventions.

LEGAL/ETHICAL ASPECTS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
Assists the nursing student to understand the legal and ethical dimensions of practice for a Christian professional nurse.

LEGAL/ETHICAL ASPECTS OF NURSING PRACTICE
Is a course in which the student will identify various ethical theories and define one’s own value system. This course will then explore how the defined theoretical frameworks and value system support the nurse’s legal responsibilities. The ethical/legal issues discussed will relate to the practice of nursing.
ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS II
Practicum provides guided clinical experience with adult clients in a medical surgical setting.

ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS II LAB
Focuses on professional psychomotor nursing skills that complements didactic content of Alterations in Wellness II. Provides reinforcement of psychomotor experiences in the clinical setting.

NURSING OF DEVELOPING FAMILIES
Introduces students to the stressors encountered and nursing preventions required to retain, attain, and maintain system stability with childbearing families.

PEDIATRIC PRACTICUM
Provides guided clinical experience with childbearing and child rearing families in a variety of settings and agencies.

NEONATES AND FAMILIES PEDIATRICS
Provides guided clinical experience with child rearing families in a variety of settings and agencies.

NURSING OF DEVELOPING FAMILIES
Introduces students to the stressors encountered and nursing preventions required to retain, attain and maintain system stability with childbearing families.

HISTORY OF NURSING
Is a course which introduces students to the concept that nursing today was formed by its history. Students will explore the development of the nursing profession, the impact of social and scientific changes on nursing, and nursing’s impact on society.

NURSING RESEARCH
Introduces students to basic research principles and application of these principles of nursing practice.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS
Studies nursing responsibilities in assisting individuals, families and groups to meet stressors and retain, attain and maintain system stability within the community setting.

COMMUNITY PRACTICUM
Provides the student with an opportunity to integrate previous knowledge with community health nursing and to apply this within a nursing process framework to individuals and aggregates in various community site settings.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS FOR RN’S
Is an in-depth study of nursing responsibilities in assisting individuals, families and groups to meet stressors and retain, attain and maintain system stability with a community setting. Advanced clinical practice with clients in the community in a variety of settings and agencies is provided.
WOMEN’S HEALTH
Introduces the student to women’s health across the life span and provides a holistic view of the health of women throughout the life cycle.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN NURSING
Introduces the student to health care among differing cultural groups.

EXTANT HEALTH ISSUES IN CULTURAL SETTINGS
Introduces the student to wholistic health issues as the similarities and differences of populations are discussed. Students will explore cultural aspects and population concerns as aggregates interact with the environment.

THERAPEUTIC NUTRITION
Is a lecture course designed to initially assist the nursing student in building a sound foundation in scientific nutritional concepts. The course continues by applying these concepts in the nutritional care of specific clients in the promotion of health and treatment of disease.

PARISH NURSING
Introduces the RN student to theory and practical aspects of nursing in a church setting. Elective.

PARISH NURSING
Introduces the student to the concept and practice of parish nursing within the church/community setting. Included are the four roles of the parish nurse: health educator, health counselor, liaison to the community and trainer of volunteers.

INTRODUCTION TO BASIC EKG
Introduces the nursing student to basic rhythms of the heart. Prerequisite: Sophomore nursing standing.

NEUMAN IN THE SPIRITUAL VARIABLE
Introduces students to the stressors encountered in the spiritual dimension and applies healthy interventions and preventions in various settings. This course is open to juniors and seniors and B.S.N.

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLNESS
Focuses on the lines of defense and nursing preventions when assisting clients requiring psychiatric interventions. Senior standing.

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLNESS PRACTICUM
Provides guided, clinical practice with clinicals in a variety of mental health settings and agencies.

ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS III
Focuses on lines of defense and nursing preventions used in assisting clients and families experiencing major and/or complex alteration in wellness.

ALTERATIONS IN WELLNESS PRACTICUM III
Provides guided clinical practice correlated with theoretical content of Contemporary Nursing in Acute Care II.

COMPLEX NURSING SYSTEMS
Explores the principles of effective leadership/management skills in managing the health needs of individuals and groups.

COMMUNITY PRACTICUM
Assists the student in applying leadership and management skills in providing primary, secondary and tertiary preventions for clients and aggregates. Opportunities are provided for the student to be a participant or observer in situations that require an understanding of the leadership role of the RN.

COMPLEX NURSING SYSTEMS FOR RN’S
Explores the principles of effective leadership/management skills in managing the health needs of individuals, groups and peers within the role of the professional nurse.

GLOBAL EDUCATION
Allows the students to study and experience the history, culture and health beliefs of this third world country.

SEMINAR IN CONTEMPORARY NURSING ISSUES
Is a faculty advised seminar in which the student presents an in-depth, independent study of current topics, forces and/or issues affecting contemporary nursing practice.
