Florida A&M University is proud of its glorious past and long tradition of excellence in nursing education. Close student-faculty relationships prepare graduates who possess clinical reasoning skills, are technologically proficient, grounded in principles of social justice, and able to practice professionally in a variety of medical/health care delivery systems. The faculty, grounded in their understanding of the realities of delivering services, is focused on the many contemporary community-based health promotion and disease prevention nursing and health care challenges that face rural and urban population across the lifespan.

Our location in the state's capital provides us multiple opportunities to involve faculty and students in governmental issues that affect nursing health policy issues.

The School offers a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Nursing. Both programs are approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The School also offers a Doctor Of Philosophy (PhD) In Nursing Science cooperatively with the University of Florida and Florida State University.

THE BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

The four-year program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The curriculum is designed in two phases: (1) pre-professional requirements may be completed at a junior college or another university.

The program provides the foundation of a liberal arts education as well as the nursing theory and science necessary for the full scope of professional nursing responsibilites and the knowledge base necessary for advanced education in specialized clinical practice.

The knowledge base in nursing theory and science is applied through extensive clinical experinces in medical/health care delivery systems that range in size and services from large area hospitals, to community clinics, to homes. Your nursing courses are structured so that you are concurrently enroll in a nursing theory course focused on understanding the science of health and disease conditions and a clinical course that permits your integration application of the science in the clinical setting.

Baccalaureate education in nursing provides the basic foundation for entry into program practice. When you graduate with a Baccalaureate of Science degree, you are prepared as a generalist capable of functioning in any number of beginning leadership roles in a variety of medical/health delivery systems.

COMPUTERS IN NURSING
This course covers theories and concepts related to the application of computer technology in nursing. The major focus of the course is on computer application skills as applied to general education and areas that are crucial to providing computer support for nurses in the delivery of patient care. Hands-on experience is provided.

INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING

CONCEPTS OF HEALTH PROMOTION
Introduction to utilization of the nursing process to facilitate health promotion for individuals of all ages and families responding to stimuli.

PRACTICUM: CONCEPTS OF HEALTH PROMOTION
Introduces the utilization of the nursing process to facilitate health promotion for individuals of all ages and families responding to stimuli. Students will have experiences in day care centers, schools, health centers, senior citizen centers and with health fairs.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Provide a framework for comprehensive health assessment of individuals across the life span. Includes content and techniques related to eliciting and recording a health history and performing a complete physical examination.

PRACTICUM: HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Provide a framework for comprehensive health assessment of individuals across the life span. Includes content and techniques related to eliciting and recording a health history and performing a complete physical examination. Initial practice is with peers in a supervised laboratory setting. Further application occurs within the clinical setting in practicum courses.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Focus on the pathogenesis of human disease as a consequence of abnormalities and alterations of normal physiological functions. The course will be based on a molecular and cellular framework aimed at exploring regulatory and compensatory mechanisms used at the cellular level by the body to resort homeostasis in response to changes in the internal and external environment.

PHARMACOLOGY
Study of the effects of drugs on individuals experiencing adaptive and maladaptive states of health. Nursing implications are incorporated.

Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of adults experiencing commonly occurring and multiple stimuli.

PRACTICUM: NURSING PROCESS I
Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of adults experiencing commonly occurring and multiple stimuli. Students will have experiences in primary care, acute care, and extended care facilities.

NURSING RESEARCH
Development of selected competencies necessary to critically read, evaluate and interpret findings of research studies important to the practice of professional nursing. Focus is on understanding the research process and applying research findings to nursing practice.

Utilization of the nursing process to promote adaptation of child bearing families. The course emphasizes the nursing care of clients in adaptive as well as maladaptive states of health during the prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum period.

NURSING PROCESS IV
Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of individuals and their families experiencing emotional, psychiatric, and psychophysiological stimuli.

PRACTICUM: NURSING PROCESS IV
Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of individuals and their families experiencing emotional, psychiatric, and psychophysiological stimuli. Students will have experiences in acute care, long-term care, and outpatient facilities.

NURSING PROCESS V
Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of adults and their families experiencing multiple and complex interacting stimuli.

Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of adults and their families experiencing multiple and complex interacting stimuli. Students will have experiences in acute care, long term care (extended care), and home health care agencies.

Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of families and communities. Focuses on levels of prevention, epidemiology, planning and program implementation to meet community health needs. The course is offered in seven and a half weeks period.

PRACTICUM: NURSING PROCESS VI
Utilization of the nursing process to facilitate adaptation of families and communities. Focuses on levels of prevention, epidemiology, planning and program implementation to meet community health needs. Students will have clinical experiences in primary care clinics, health maintenance organizations, and public health settings. The course is offered in seven and a half weeks period.

NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Theories and principles of leadership and management which provide the foundation for professional nurse's role as a leader and change agent. Emphasis on knowledge and skills necessary to assume first line leadership/management positions in a variety of settings. Students will examine their own leadership styles and philosophies of nursing management. The course in a concentrated period, i.e., over one to two weeks.

PRACTICUM: NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Theories and principles of leadership and management which provide the foundation for professional nurse's role as a leader and change agent. Emphasis on knowledge and skills necessary to assume first line leadership/management positions in a variety of settings. Students will examine their own leadership styles and philosophies of nursing management. Students will have experiences as leaders and managers in a variety of health care settings. The course is offered over a concentrated hour period.

NURSING SEMINAR
Professional socialization by focusing on behaviors to facilitate transition from nursing student to professional nurse. Extensive, independent review of previous course content is required to demonstrate successful synthesis of essential concepts and principles necessary for the safe and efficient delivery of professional nursing care. A senior proficiency examination evaluates the achievement of synthesis of essential concepts and principles within the professional knowledge base. The senior proficiency examination is administrered after the student has successfully passed all other second semester senior year courses.
