MISSION STATEMENT

The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, as an integral part of Florida Atlantic University, is committed to the pursuit of higher education grounded in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Faculty of the College support the University mission of education, scholarship, and service.

The baccalaureate and master’s degree program are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The baccalaureate program is also approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the Undergraduate Program is to advance the study, understanding, and professional practice of the discipline of nursing.

The overall goal of the undergraduate curriculum is to prepare graduates whose practice of nursing nurtures the wholeness of persons through caring in nursing situations in a variety of settings.

BEING CARED FOR: REFLECTIONS FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BED
Exploration through writing, reading, and thinking about the concept “being cared for” and its meaning to the individual as a member of society as well as a future health care professional. Course encompasses a variety of writing assignments based on readings and reflections on the situation of being nursed.

TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETENCIES OF CARING
Study of technological competencies fundamental to coming to know a person and responding to calls for nursing. Focuses on the development of assessment, psychomotor, cognitive, affective, and interpersonal skills for practice in nursing situations.

TECHNOLOGICAL COMPETENCIES OF CARING IN PRACTICE
Guided practice and performance of the technological competencies of assessment, psychomotor, cognitive, and interpersonal skills fundamental to coming to know a person and responding to calls for nursing. Safe, competent performance will be demonstrated by the student in the clinical lab environment.

BASIC NURSING SKILLS
Introduces essential nursing skills and their underlying theoretical rationale.

BASIC NURSING SKILLS LAB
Course is designed to develop beginning proficiency in selected nursing skills.

MODES OF HELPING 1
Focuses on skills necessary for holistic assessment, including history taking, physical assessment, and basic communication skills.

MODES OF HELPING LAB 1
Acquisition of holistic assessment skills in laboratory setting.

DECISION MAKING IN NURSING SITUATIONS
Application of the assessment, psychomotor, cognitive, affective, and interpersonal skills and concepts essential in coming to know those nursed in a variety of nursing situations. Course utilizes professional nursing knowledge in nursing situations and responds to calls for nursing.

MODES OF HELPING 2
Builds on a prior and concurrent study of modes of helping in nursing and assists students to integrate the full range of knowledge necessary in nursing situations.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING AS A DISCIPLINE AND PROFESSION An introduction to Nursing as a distinct discipline of knowledge and a unique professional service. Concepts introduced in this course are foundational to the program and include: Images of the nurse and nursing, nursing as a discipline of knowledge, nursing as a profession, wholeness of persons connected with others and with the environment, and nursing as nurturing the wholeness of persons through caring.

GENERAL NURSING SITUATIONS
Study of general nursing situations with individuals of all ages.

NURSING PRACTICE IN GENERAL NURSING SITUATIONS
Clinical study of general nursing situations with individuals of all ages.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY 1
Study of pathological alterations in biologic subsystems that influence health state in individual human systems. Mechanisms of illness and injury, adaptive responses, medical and nursing assessments, diagnoses, and treatments are examined in conjunction with alterations. Part one of a two-part course.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY 2
Study of pathological alterations in biologic subsystems that influence health state in individual human systems. Mechanisms of illness and injury, adaptive responses, medical and nursing assessments, diagnoses, and treatments are examined in conjunction with alterations. Nonpathologic alterations that have implications for human system patterning, such as pregnancy, are also examined. Part two of a two-part course.

PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS
The focus of this course is in the study of drug groups and the effect of drugs on human systems.

FOOD, NUTRITION, AND HEALTH
Course examines the foundations of nutrition, including digestive system physiology, nutrients, standards, and therapeutic diets for common health concerns.

NURSING SITUATIONS IN PRACTICE: CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Practice and application of nursing care strategies in acute nursing situations focused on children and their families. Applies caring attributes, physiologic and psychosocial variation, cultural and developmental theory with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills in the identification of client calls for nursing and nursing responses.

NURSING SITUATIONS IN PRACTICE: CHILDBEARING
Practice and application of nursing care strategies in acute nursing situations focused on childbearing women and their families. Applies caring attributes, physiologic and psychosocial variation, cultural and developmental theory with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills in the identification of client calls for nursing and nursing responses.

NURSING SITUATIONS WITH WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND FAMILIES
Study of nursing situations with childbearing women and children and acute nursing situations focused on childbearing women, children, and their families. Applies caring attributes, physiologic and psychosocial variation, cultural and developmental theory with an emphasis on evidence- based practice, and critical thinking skills in the identification of client calls for nursing and nursing responses.

NURSING SITUATIONS IN PRACTICE: WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND FAMILIES
Practice and application of nursing care strategies in acute nursing situations focused on women, children and families. Applies caring attributes, physiologic and psychosocial variation, cultural and developmental theory with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills in the identification of client calls for nursing and nursing responses.

INTEGRATION OF MODES OF HELPING
This course guides students to develop reasoned caring in the integration of prior study of nursing assessment, nursing as caring, and basic technological skills as well as the current study of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and general nursing situations. A systematic approach to clinical decision making will be introduced. This course establishes the foundation for practicing nursing as caring for adults experiencing physical illness.

NURSING SITUATIONS IN PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Focuses on the development of the second degree student as a professional nurse through the study of nursing situations across the lifespan. Analyzes aspects of the professional nurse role from the perspective of previous career experience and the
professional, social, and practical aspects of becoming a nurse.
