The School of Nursing fosters an integrated, student focused, and community partnered nursing model embracing a pedagogy of dialectic practice based learning within an egalitarian caring environment.

The BSN program at Florida Gulf Coast University is designed to prepare caring scholar clinicians for professional practice in contemporary health care settings. Graduates are prepared to assume vital roles in the improvement of the health care system. State-mandated common prerequisites for nursing form the foundation of study for the major. The community partnered, student-focused nursing curriculum is grounded in knowledge of the theory and practice of nursing with integration of critical thinking, communication, health promotion, caring, and cultural connectedness constructs.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT: BASIS FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Holistic, critical thinking approach to health assessment as a basis for planning culturally congruent nursing care for individuals across the lifespan.

CARING SCHOLAR CLINICIAN
Foundational course emphasizing professional role development in nursing. The interrelationships of nursing theory, research and practice as a basis for understanding nursing as a discipline are explored.

PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO ALTERATIONS IN HEALTH
Basic concepts underlying pathological processes and physiological responses to environmental, sociocultural, genetic, lifestyle, and developmental factors are examined with emphasis on practical application from an interdisciplinary and holistic perspective.

PHARMACOLOGICAL, HERBAL, AND NUTRITIONAL THERAPIES
Holistic approach to understanding the most commonly used pharmacological, herbal, and nutritional therapies and concepts of polypharmacy and polytherapy.

POPULATION-BASED CARE: SPECIAL POPULATIONS
Focus on health care needs during life transitions from prenatal care, the birthing process, early infancy, childhood and adolescence.

POPULATION BASED CARE: MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Introduction to holistic mental health care that synthesizes biological, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual concepts related to nursing care of clients with various psychiatric disorders and their families across the lifespan.

NURSING ELECTIVE
In-depth examination of a current or emerging topic or issue in nursing. This course may be repeated for credit for different topics.

CARING SCHOLAR CLINICIAN ROLE
Emphasizes professional role socialization within the discipline through examination of nursing philosophy, theory, research and practice interrelationships.

ISSUES AND LEADERSHIP
Examination of professional issues and nursing leadership within a changing health care climate. The interrelationships between selected facets of health care are explored in conjunction with moral development, ethical decision-making, and leadership in nursing.

COMMUNITY PARTNERED CARE
Focus on promoting health of individuals and communities within the context of public and community health policies and legislation.

POPULATION BASED CARE: VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
Introduction to nursing care of individuals with common acute and chronic health conditions and lifestyle.

CRISIS BASED CARE
Nursing care of individuals with complex acute and chronic health conditions.

ISSUES BASED CARE
Examination of issues and dilemmas faced by nurses within a changing health care climate. Interrelationships between selected facets of health care are explored with moral development and ethical decision making in nursing.

DIRECTED INDEPENDENT STUDY
Individualized pursuit of a selected topic.

SPECIAL TOPICS IN NURSING
Examination of topics of current or special interest in nursing. The course may be repeated for different topic areas, and content may vary.

SENIOR PRACTICUM
Culminating practice experience providing opportunity for synthesis of critical thinking, communication, health promotion, cultural connectedness and caring in nursing practice.

UNIVERSITY COLLOQUIUM
The University Colloquium brings together students from all five colleges in a series of interdisciplinary learning experiences. These experiences are designed to address the ecological perspective outcome in relations to other university outcomes and guiding principles. Critical thinking and communication skills will be enhanced through field trips, discussion, projects, and a journal to be maintained by each student.

SHAPING HEALTHCARE IN 21ST CENTURY
Investigation of the interdisciplinary concepts of health and dynamics of healthcare delivery systems. Ethical, legal and social considerations for the 21st century healthcare practitioner are examined.

MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE
Interdisciplinary analysis of leadership and management concepts; managerial skills and techniques; fiscal responsibility; human resource development; outcomes assessment; building strategic alliances in changing environments; and organizational ethics.

RESEARCH METHODS IN HEALTHCARE
Introduces qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry; critical evaluation of health research literature; ethical integrity issues in research; interdisciplinary proposal preparation for health care scholarship; and application of research findings in health profession's practice.

SENIOR SEMINAR
Course synthesizing career and life experiences across disciplines, via exploration of interdisciplinary issues and civic projects.
