ESSENTIALS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING
This course presents the history of nursing and nursing theory as an introduction to the profession and provides a framework for critical analysis of the role of the nurse in health care. The student will be introduced to professional values and ethical behaviors that guide nursing practice and the impact of utilizing the results of research to improve the care of individuals, families, groups and communities.

INTEGRATIVE HOLISTIC CARE
In this course the student will be introduced to holistic nursing as the theoretical milieu in which the student more deeply explores the human caring process, therapeutic presence, global philosophies of health and healing, and the nurse healer role. An understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity and human spirituality is a thread woven throughout this course and sets the framework for the student’s understanding of the healing philosophies which guide the principles and practices of complementary and alternative therapies. Integrating complementary therapies into traditional nursing practice as a powerful healing modality is emphasized.

NURSING FOUNDATIONS
This course introduces the student to a patient-centered, analytical process for assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating outcomes of care. Professional values and behaviors, caring practices, communication principles and technology, and decision-making skills will be integrated within the context of a diverse patient population. The student will apply learning in the clinical setting with emphasis on the aging adult.

HEALTH PROMOTION ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
This course will expand upon the basic concepts of health promotion, risk reduction and disease prevention across all age groups. The influence of family, culture, community and environment on health will be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on risk assessment, the concept of self-care, and processes by which healthy lifestyle changes may be identified and fostered across the lifespan. The student will apply knowledge of growth and development, sensitivity to personal and cultural definitions of health, and teaching-learning principles to promote health and wellness. The opportunity to observe wellness in children and adults in various community settings is included as a clinical experience.

CARE OF THE ADULT IN ILLNESS I
This course addresses the pathophysiology of illness and disease in adults and identifies the role of the professional nurse in assessment and collaborative management of symptoms. Knowledge about individual and family/caregiver responses to illness and disease is explored with the goal of maximizing quality of life and maintaining optimal level of functioning. The student will be expected to incorporate patient-centered care principles into planning and evaluating outcomes of care for the adult patient.

NURSING PHARMACOLOGY
This course examines the role of the nurse in comprehensive care of the patient requiring pharmacological therapy, including use of natural alternative therapies as wellness or health promotion strategies. Content will be focused on assessment of individualized needs across the lifespan.

CARE OF THE ADULT IN ILLNESS II
This course is a continuation of RN201 Care of the Adult in Illness I. In addition, the student will be expected to synthesize knowledge of pathophysiology and symptom management in the care of patients with multiple medical conditions.

NURSE AS PROVIDER OF CARE
This course expands upon the provider of care role of the nurse in planning, implementing and evaluating nursing and medical interventions that promote health for patients. The student will be expected to apply theoretical knowledge and scientific principles and teaching/learning processes to the care of the patient. This course focuses on the underlying principles essential for acquisition and mastery of technical skills with incorporation into professional practice.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
In this course the student will learn to perform a holistic assessment of the adult and child incorporating influences that growth and development, family, environment and culture may have on health. The student will complete and document a comprehensive health history and physical exam of the adult and child with inclusion of an assessment related to health education needs.

NURSE AS PROVIDER AND COORDINATOR OF CARE
This course will focus on the ability of the student to synthesize data and prioritize care for multiple complex patients leading to potential change or adaptation to the plan of care. The student will be expected to expand the role of provider of care as a contributing member of the interdisciplinary health care team. The role of the nurse as teacher and advocate for patient well-being and quality of life will be emphasized along with integration of legal guidelines and ethical decision-making. Self-reflection and self-evaluation processes will be utilized to assist the student in furthering growth into the professional role.

FAMILY DYNAMICS
Principles of family dynamics, family theory, and care of the family will be explored in this course. The student will investigate membership within a family as a means to build self-awareness and as a foundation for providing nursing care to families. A holistic family assessment will be performed with inclusion of approaches for working with families in order to provide optimal nursing care.

HEALTHCARE ISSUES ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
This course will focus on the unique needs of individuals across the lifespan in maintaining independence and wellness. Normal growth and development, normal aging, and consideration for vulnerable populations with special needs, disability or illness will be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the nurse in assisting individuals to maximize independence and quality of life. Access to care and referrals to appropriate resources will be discussed. The role of the nurse as a change agent within healthcare systems and delivery of care will be introduced.

CARE OF CHILDREN
This course explores the well child and the needs of children requiring healthcare from infancy through adolescence. Health problems in children and the impact of illness on a child and the family will be addressed through a family-centered approach. The student will be expected to correlate normal growth and development with the care of the ill child and promote healthy lifestyle strategies in the care of children.

CARE OF THE CHILD BEARING FAMILY
This course encompasses care of the child-bearing family, from preconception through postpartum, and assessment and care of the newborn. Emphasis is placed on promoting a healthy pregnancy and birth within a family-centered care environment. High-risk pregnancy and complications that may occur will be addressed along with nursing care of the high-risk newborn. The student will apply family nursing theory when caring for families with a new child.

CARE OF THE CRITICALLY ILL PATIENT
This course will focus on the unique health care needs of the critically ill patient and the impact of illness on the family and community. The student will correlate pathophysiology with assessment and evaluate responses to interventions for patients requiring intensive nursing and medical care. The student will further develop the roles of educator, collaborator and advocate to care for patients and families in crisis.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE
This course explores the care of individuals, families and communities experiencing alterations in mental health. The student will investigate the implications of living with an altered pattern of behavior and its impact on the family and community. Therapeutic use of self in establishing nursepatient relationships, along with the nurse’s role in collaboration within an interdisciplinary team to promote mental health, will be emphasized.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
This course expands the focus of health care to the community and populations. The student will assess and impact the health of individuals, families and communities through participation in home visits, health screening, health promotion clinics, and education activities. Environmental health and safety, epidemiology, and communicable disease control affecting the health of populations will be addressed. Critical analysis of research, and the role of the nurse as a change agent, will be reviewed as a basis for forming public health policy.

NURSING RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY
This course presents a comprehensive analysis of the principles of research designed to improve patient outcomes and the health of populations. Topics will include research design and methodologies, ethics, protection of subjects, and the role of the nurse as a participant in research. The student will critically analyze examples of nursing research and correlate findings with evidence of best practice in the care of individuals, families and populations.

HOLISTIC END OF LIFE CARE
This course focuses on the physical and emotional needs of the patient and family at the end of life. Ethical issues that may arise at the end of life such as transcultural and spiritual issues, practice issues related to life-support technology and patient self-determination will be thoughtfully explored utilizing an ethical decision-making framework. Culturally competent care will be addressed within the context of the belief system and values of the patient and family. Hospice care, and the role of the hospice nurse, will be integrated into the care of the dying and the grieving family.

NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
This course focuses on analyzing the role of the professional nurse as a manager and leader within healthcare systems and as a member of a profession. Principles of management theory, leadership theory, conflict resolution, negotiation, and group process skills will be considered when exploring the role of the nurse as a designer, manager and coordinator of care. Methods to evaluate the quality of nursing care and analyze costeffective healthcare delivery systems will be addressed.

NURSING WITHIN A GLOBAL COMMUNITY
This course provides an understanding of the global environment in which health care is provided and the role of nursing towards promotion of world health. Topics covered will include the effects of disease transmission, health policy, bioterrorism, natural disasters and economics on interconnected populations and public health. Disaster planning, emergency response plans and triage principles will be addressed. Examples whereby nursing is actively promoting collaboration between nations to share knowledge gained through research will be explored.

NURSING INTERNSHIP/PROFESSIONAL ROLE DEVELOPMENT
The focus of this course is to prepare the student for entry into professional practice. The student will demonstrate the ability to integrate professional nursing essentials and accountability into independent practice within an internship experience. Through a self-reflective process the student will formulate goals for life-long learning and professional development.
