Green River Community College (Practical Nursing Program)
Green River Community College’s Practical Nursing program prepares students for careers as licensed practical nurses.
The Practical Nursing program consists of 103 to 108 credits. Upon successful completion of the required credits, students earn certificates in Practical Nursing. Graduates will then be eligible to take the licensing examination, and upon passing, with nursing commission approval, they will be able to practice as LPNs.
Students must achieve a minimum of 2.3 in each course in order to continue in the program. Those who do not receive a 2.3 will not be able to return to the GRCC Practical Nursing program.
HISTORY
In early 1964, Administrator William Erickson and Director of Nursing at Auburn Hospital, Agnes Farr, contacted Ray Needham the director of the Green River Vocational Technical Institute and requested the development of a practical nursing program. Under the direction of Doreen Lorenz the curriculum for the program was developed and submitted. The original letter from Margaret Simpson, executive director of Washington State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners granting approval for the program on July 17, 1964 is on display in the Science Center, Room 125.
Since July 1965, 1185 Practical Nursing students have graduated from Green River. The majority of these students passed the licensing exam on their first attempt. The program’s curriculum has had many changes in course content over the years including the inclusion of four nursing paradigm concepts that make up the program’s conceptual framework and eight curriculum concepts that are the basis for delivering care.
In light of the dire need for nurses both locally and nationally, the college has had the foresight to support the nursing department and the community which it serves by creating new and improved facilities for the nursing program. Also, the administration has approved the development of an associate degree in nursing which will allow students to pursue a registered nursing license. This program is currently in development.

Practical Nursing
The certificate program prepares a student to provide safe and efficient nursing care. Health facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and public health nursing services employ practical nurses under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.
A multimedia system of individualized instruction, offering stated objectives with a wide range of learning experiences to accomplish each objective is provided.
The Practical Nursing program is a 103 to 108-credit program in which students must demonstrate academic proficiency by completing basic curriculum requirements prior to entry into the core sequence of nursing classes. A high school diploma or GED is required, and a physical exam is required after entrance into the core program. A minimum grade of 2.3 is required in each nursing and supporting course. Evidence of academic proficiency is established by completion of each of the following curriculum requirements with a 2.3 grade or higher.
