Gwynedd-Mercy College (School of Nursing)




Gwynedd-Mercy College is a pioneer in the field of nursing education being the first Catholic college in the United States to offer an associate of science in nursing program. Our state-of-the-art Sister Isabelle Keiss Center features a nursing skills laboratory, computer labs, faculty/student research areas and seminar rooms. Our labs provide an accurate simulation of a hospital environment for clinical instruction.

The School of Nursing offers associate, bachelor and masters degrees as well as a post-master's degree certification program. Our affiliation with more than 200 hospitals and clinical sites in the area allows students to gain experience in patient care as part of their curriculum. Gwynedd-Mercy College is widely known for producing the best nurses in this region, and has been doing so for more than 50 years.

MISSION

The Mission of the School of Nursing of Gwynedd-Mercy College is to present educational programs that will prepare nurses at the Associate Degree, the Baccalaureate Degree and the Master Degree levels.

As a School of Nursing under Roman Catholic auspices, it carries the responsibility for the education of nurses within the framework of Judeo-Christian beliefs, values and ethical principals and the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, the founder and sponsor of Gwynedd-Mercy College.

Nurses educated through the School of Nursing programs are prepared to offer direct and/or indirect nursing care to persons from different cultures in varying states of health in a variety of settings. Their goal is to effect positive changes in the health status of those to whom they minister by respect for the physical, emotional, socio-cultural and spiritual dimensions of each individual.

Faculty facilitate the development of competent, caring, reflective, moral and ethical providers of nursing care through the selection of nursing content, learning experiences, and individual guidance. The mission of the School of Nursing affirms the mission of the College and the health care ministry of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.

The offering of continuing education programs for nurses and service to the community as an outcome of its programs supports and follows from this mission.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY LAB / CLINICAL / LK This course consists of the study of selected national health problems and their nursing implications. Respiratory, cardiovascular and renal dysfunctions occurring throughout the life cycle are addressed. Concepts of obstruction, inflammation and degeneration are addressed for these health problems. The clinical component includes experiences with adults and children in selected health care settings. DIRECTED PRACTICUM / LECTURE / DK This course addresses the study of selected national health problems among various cultures and their nursing problems through the use of the nursing process. These nursing problems consist of selected dysfunctions of the neurological, endocrine, metabolic, and integumentary systems. Also included are selected neoplastic disorders of the respiratory, hematologic and female reproductive system and problems related to substance abuse. RESEARCH PROCESSES IN NURSING PRACTICE / LECTURE / DK The focus of this course is the process of research. Research methods, analysis and critique of published research, research utilization and dissemination are discussed. The course provides an experience in conducting descriptive research on a nursing problem. (Portfolio Assessment available.) SELECTED HLTH PROBLEMS OF WOMEN & CHILD / LECTURE / DK This course focuses on common health issues and problems affecting women and children. Discussion includes analysis of these issues/problems, identifying the cultural, spiritual and ethical influences. The role of the nurse and community resources available to this population are explored. (Portfolio Assessment available.) Nursing elective given in the last semester of the senior year. ADVANCED ASSESSMENT PRACTICUM / LECTURE / EK The clinical practice component complementing the didactic and laboratory components of Adv Assmt & Cl Decision-Adv Prac Nursing. Advanced practice nursing students perform physical assessments in the clinical setting under preceptor supervision. ADV ASSMT & CL DECISION-ADV PRAC NURSING / LECTURE / EK Builds upon the basic skills of physical assessment. Students practice health assessment and history taking skills in classroom and laboratory settings. Emphasis is on clinical decision making and differentiation of abnormal versus normal findings and the integration of history and physical examination. ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR FOR ADV PRAC NUR / LECTURE / EK Examination of human behavior within the context of health care delivery systems. Emphasis is on the impact of rapidly accelerating change and effective management of change. Theories of organizational behavior are presented in light of specific organizational problems that impact advanced practice nursing.
