Hinds Community College - Health Related Professions




Accessible, affordable, quality education with an emphasis on health care careers, the goal of the Health Related Professions program is to prepare competent, caring health care providers. We offer Nursing and Allied Health programs, short term health care courses, and continuing education classes. All health programs require acceptance to the class based on specific program requirements.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the nursing and allied health programs is to prepare individuals to be competent, caring, health care professionals.

GOALS
1. Provide academic courses that support existing nursing and allied health programs and foster articulation to higher degree programs.
2. Provide health care programs to prepare students for employment in the changing health care environment.
3. Provide essential technology necessary for students to gain competency in the entry and retrieval of information from electronic networks.
4. Promote inter-disciplinary teaching/learning experiences among nursing and allied health programs.
5. Provide health related continuing education programs for unemployed, employed, or underemployed adults who need training or retraining, or who can otherwise profit from the programs.
6. Promote a student-centered focus that includes recruitment, advising, admission support, instruction, and retention activities.
7. Promote activities that enhance the quality of life of students, faculty and staff.
8. Promote caring, wellness, leadership, community awareness and cultural sensitivity.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING
Associate Degree Nursing is a two-year program that prepares the graduate as a generalist capable of providing competent, accountable client care in diverse settings. The graduate utilizes skills in critical thinking, relationship, care management, primary care, and community to function as a provider of care, manager of care and member of a profession. Health promotion, disease prevention, and heath protection, across the lifespan, are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Major areas of emphasis encompass the following core components of nursing practice: professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration and managing care. The graduate is prepared to write the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Licensing of registered nurses is regulated by the Mississippi Board of Nursing. The program is accredited by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

PRACTICAL NURSING
The Practical Nursing Program, a career training program, admits students in August and January on the Nursing Allied Health Center and Vicksburg campuses and in January on the Rankin County campus. The following admission policies are required by the Mississippi Department of Education, the Mississippi Board of Nursing, the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges, and/or Hinds Community College. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide the required data to the Office of Admissions, Nursing/Allied Health Center, 1750 Chadwick Drive, Jackson, MS 39204-3490.

NURSING (AAS-ADN)

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Course focus is on personal and professional development with emphasis on leadership concepts and professional responsibilities. Opportunities are provided for participation in service learning activities of the college, community and professional nursing organizations.

NURSING SCIENCE I
Within the framework of the nursing process and across the lifespan, the focus of this course is on concepts related to nursing as a profession, community, communication, health assessment, and psychomotor skills essential to basic nursing care, and care of clients experiencing sensory disorders. (5 hr lecture, 12 hrs lab)

EXTERNSHIP FOR AD NURSING
Provides the nursing student the opportunity to practice basic nursing skills and apply cognitive knowledge in the practice of nursing under the supervision of an adjunct faculty member while earning monetary compensation. (Requires 40 hours per week for 10 weeks)

TRANSCULTURAL NURSING
This course provides the student the opportunity to experience a direct relationship with healthcare providers and recipients from various cultural backgrounds in an international setting. Students will travel to a supervised site for theoretical concepts as well as clinical experiences. Students will gain valuable components of learning processes relating to culturally diverse communities with emphasis on holistic care. (16 hr lecture, 48 hr lab)

NURSING SCIENCE II
Within the framework of the nursing process and across the lifespan, the focus of this course is on pharmacotherapeutics, community resources, and management of the client experiencing cardiac, circulatory, and respiratory disorders (5 hr lecture, 12 hr lab)

PROFESSIONAL NURSING SKILLS
Within the framework of the nursing process, the focus of this course is to provide the paramedic or respiratory therapist with the psychomotor skills and principles of pharmacotherapy essential for basic nursing care. This course can also be utilized as a review for licensed practical nurses or registered professional nurses. (8 week course: 8 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

CLINICAL SPECIALTY ELECTIVE
Provides opportunities for nursing students to explore clinical specialty areas for future nursing practice; and enhance their skills and apply cognitive knowledge, in the practice of nursing, under the supervision of a preceptor. (1 hr lecture, 6 hr clinical)

NURSING SCIENCE III
Within the framework of the nursing process and across the lifespan, the focus of this course is on the management of clients experiencing gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, substance abuse disorders, and management of the care of clients experiencing men’s, women’s, and family health conditions/disorders. (5 hr lecture, 12 hr lab)

TRANSITION TO RN I
Focuses on the transition of the licensed practical nurse, paramedic, or respiratory therapist to the role of the registered professional nurse. (8 week course: 6 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

TRANSITION TO RN II
Focuses on the role of the registered professional nurse in caring for clients across the lifespan as related to community concepts and in the management of care for clients experiencing alterations in circulatory and respiratory function. (8 week course: 6 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

TRANSITION TO RN III
Focuses on the role of the registered professional nurse in the management of care for clients across the lifespan as related to family health and clients experiencing alterations in gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and endocrine function. (8 week course: 6 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

NCLEX-RN PREPARATION
Provides assessment and skill enhancement for preparation for the NCLEX-RN®, the national licensing exam for register nurses. (2 hr lecture)

TRANSITION TO RN IV
Focuses on the role of the registered professional nurse in the management of care for clients across the lifespan as related to substance abuse and crisis intervention and clients experiencing alterations in neurological, psychological, musculoskeletal, and sensory function. (8 week course: 6 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

NURSING SCIENCE IV
Within the framework of the nursing process and across the lifespan, the focus of this course is on the management of clients experiencing musculoskeletal, sensory, neurologic and psychiatric disorders. A transition component focuses on management concepts as they relate to the role of the registered nurse. (4 hr lecture, 15 hr lab)

NCLEX-RN ASSESSMENT
Provides the licensed practical nurse, paramedic, or respiratory care therapist with assessment of skills for the NCLEX-RN. (1 hr lecture)

TRANSITION TO RN V
Focuses on management concepts as they relate to the role of the registered professional nurse in caring for clients across the lifespan, and preparation for NCLEXRN, the licensed national exam for registered nurses. (8 week course: 6 hr lecture, 6 hr lab)

PRACTICAL NURSING

BASIC NUTRITION
This course consists of a study of nutrition for all individuals. Digestion, metabolism, and diet therapy are introduced. (3 hr lecture)

BODY STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
This course is a study of body structure and function essential to safe and effective nursing care. Each system of the body is covered with applications to nursing. (3 hr lecture)

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
This course is a study of the normal development processes of humans from conception to death, including physical, emotional, social, and intellectual aspects. (2 hr lecture)

GERIATRIC NURSING
This course uses the nursing process to teach the care of the geriatric patient. Clinical experience in a long term care facility is a component of this course and requires that the student has successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing Lab/Clinical. (2 hr lecture, 3 hr clinical)

FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING
This course provides the student with knowledge and skills necessary to care for the individual. Study includes beginning use of the nursing process: cause and prevention of illness: patient, family, and community health care provisions; and resource agencies available. The course also includes personal health care, medical terms, medical and meeting basic living needs. (4 hr lecture)

FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING LAB/CLINICAL
This course provides demonstrations, supervision, and practice for the student to master fundamental nursing skills including drug administration. (6 hr lab, 3 hr clinical)

PHARMACOLOGY
This course is designed to provide the student with appropriate basic theoretical and clinical information related to drugs, including: classifications, sources, dosages, basic math and measurements, regulatory requirements and basic principles of drug administration. This course must be successfully completed to complete the requirements of Fundamentals of Nursing Lab/Clinical. (2 hr lecture, 2 hr lab)

MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING
This course introduces nursing theory for the following medical-surgical disorders; neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, and digestive. Emphasis is placed on developing and demonstrating an understanding of the role of the practical nurse functioning as an effective team member. (4 hr lecture)

MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING LAB AND CLINICAL
This course includes supervised laboratory and clinical experiences for application of medical/surgical theory utilizing the nursing process. (2 hr lab, 9 hr clinical)

ALTERATIONS IN ADULT HEALTH
This course introduces nursing theory for the following medical-surgical disorders: urological, endocrine reproductive, musculosketal, and skin and special senses and oncology. Emphasis is placed on developing and demonstrating an understanding of the role of the practical nurse functioning as an effective team member. (4 hr lecture)

ALTERATIONS IN ADULT HEALTH LAB AND CLINICAL
This course includes supervised laboratory and clinical experiences for application of medical/surgical theory and the development of skill and the nursing process. (2 hr lab, 6 hr clinical)

MATERNAL-CHILD NURSING
This course utilizes the nursing process to teach care for the expectant mother from conception to delivery, including newborn, child, and family unit during normal and complicated conditions. Clinical experience includes perinatal labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn, and pediatrics. (5 hr lecture, 3 hr clinical)

PSYCHIATRIC CONCEPTS
This course provides an introduction to mental health concepts. Emphasis is placed on normal as well as abnormal behavior in application of principles of effective therapeutic communication. Lab experience will provide application of previously learned theory. (2 hr lecture, 2 hr lab)

NURSING TRANSITION
This course further develops decision making skills and promotes an interest in continued professional leadership development. Legal aspects of nursing and employment opportunities and responsibilities as well as preparation for the State Board Exam will be included. (1 hr lecture, 6 hr clinical)
