If you enroll in the School of Nursing at Illinois Wesleyan University, you are a student of the university who happens to be majoring in nursing. In the program of study over four years, once the first year is completed, you will notice that in every semester, you are taking not only nursing courses, but also courses in the liberal arts. It is a very strong philosophy of the School of Nursing that you will blend the liberal arts with this professional program.
CURRICULUM
The philosophy toward patient care at Illinois Wesleyan’s School of Nursing is reflected in its curriculum, which follows a specific framework called the theory of self-care. This theory sees health care as a collaborative process between nurse and patient and other care givers, including family.
Most students earn a bachelor of science in nursing within four years, without the requirement of summer study.

NURSING INTERVENTIONS LAB
Superb facilities at the School of Nursing include the Nursing Interventions Laboratory, which enables students to practice and develop the types of skills they will use in interacting with patients in a variety of care settings.
The Lab provides a setting in which students use a variety of resources including AV media, computers, supplies, and equipment in simulated situations, allowing students develop experience in critical thinking and decision-making in an environment which is caring, supportive, and encouraging.

FIRST YEAR
HUMAN BIOLOGY: ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
A concentrated introduction to the biology of human beings. Emphasis on the structure and function of the human body; its organs and organ systems.
THE MICROBIAL WORLD
An introduction to the biology of microbes that concentrates on bacteria and viruses. Emphasis on human health issues, on applied microbiology, and on the roles of microbes in the environment. Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory per week. Credit will not be given toward the biology major.
BASIC CHEMISTRY
Study of the basic aspects of structural chemistry with emphasis on physiological applications. Offered each fall.
LIFESPAN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
An introduction to human development from conception until death. Offered each spring.
SECOND YEAR
NURSING AND SOCIETY
Introduction to health care delivery and the discipline of nursing. The art and science of nursing are explored via study of Orem's theory of nursing and other relevant theories with special focus on fields of nursing knowledge and the meaning of culture and cultural diversity in health care delivery. Offered each fall and occasionally in spring.
FOUNDATIONS OF PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY
An introduction to the altered health states and patterns of illness in the individual. Examines the etiology and physiological changes of illness with emphasis on the major health problems in the United States. Principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are introduced. The student builds upon previous knowledge of natural sciences.
NURSING INTERACTIVE PROCESSES
An introduction to the basic techniques and technologies necessary for interacting with clients from diverse populations throughout the life cycle. Emphasis is on the principles of communication, decision-making, contracting, negotiation, and teaching-learning. The social and interpersonal foundations of the ability to nurse are explored.
NURSING AND HEALTH ASSESSMENT
An introduction to the physical examination and health assessment of the individual. Students learn the techniques necessary in performing a complete physical examination. Consideration is given to analytic skills necessary in taking an accurate health history. Practical application is expected.
NURSING AND HEALTH PROMOTION
Concepts of wellness and health promotion throughout the life cycle are discussed. The students demonstrate practical application of principles of health promotion and disease prevention in a variety of community and institutional settings. Nursing interventions appropriate to the client focus on the well elderly and healthy mother-baby dyads are examined.
HUMAN NUTRITION
Introduction to principles of nutrition that affect health promotion, health maintenance, and illness prevention throughout the life cycle. The nutritional requirements of individuals with special needs are also considered. Offered each spring.
THIRD YEAR
NURSING TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH
Develops ability to design nursing systems to care for individuals with mental health problems in a variety of health care settings and learn the nurse's role in collaborative care planning. Major psychological, sociological, and physiological theories of mental health and illness are examined as they relate to nursing.
NURSING TO PROMOTE THE RECOVERY FROM ILLNESS IN ADULT CLIENTS
Focuses on the design of nursing systems for adults with illnesses of undetermined origin or from which recovery is expected. nursing interventions for individuals experiencing diagnostic and surgical procedures are explored. The nurse's role in assisting families and clients to manage acute illnesses in varied settings is introduced.
NURSING TO PROMOTE THE CURE OR REGULATION OF ILLNESS IN ADULT CLIENTS
Develops ability to plan and deliver increasingly complex nursing systems. Focuses on cure, care, or rehabilitation of adults with chronic or long-term illnesses. Relevant psychosocial theories are explored. Collaboration with members of the heath care delivery team in institutions and communities is emphasized.
NURSING TO PROMOTE RECOVERY, CURE, OR REGULATION OF ILLNESS IN CHILDREN
The course enables the student to plan and deliver nursing care systems for children experiencing a variety of illnesses. The focus is on methods of assisting children and parents in coping with multiple demands of illness in varied settings. Nursing interventions are adjusted to the unique needs of children.
RESEARCH METHODS IN NURSING
This course introduces the students to scientific inquiry in the discipline of nursing. The relationships among conceptual, empirical, and analytical processes of research are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the critique of research and application of its use in practice.
FOURTH YEAR
NURSING TO PROMOTE STABILIZATION OF VITAL FUNCTIONING
Enables student to plan and deliver nursing systems for the critically and irreversibly ill. Emphasis on developing abilities to monitor, evaluate, and revise the nursing system. Clinical experiences include clients of all ages in acute care settings. Collaboration with members of the health care delivery system is expected.
ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT
An introduction to organization theory and fundamental considerations of planning, organizing, and controlling organizations. Focus is on theories of motivation, perception, communication, decision making, group behavior, leadership, control tools, and change as they relate to the practicing manager in business, government, hospitals, and schools. Open to juniors and seniors only. Offered each semester.
NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS
Examines the leadership/management role of the nurse in the health care delivery system. A practicum provides opportunity to design and regulate nursing systems in collaboration with other health care workers in a variety of environments: home care, acute care, and outpatient care. Demonstration of leadership skills is expected.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND COMMUNITY HEALTH SCIENCE
Application of the epidemiology concepts in the analysis of health promotion and maintenance of population are discussed. The major ideologies that shape public policy on the delivery of health care for aggregates in the community are addressed. The clinical component synthesizes principles in delivery of care to individuals, families, groups, and populations.
SEMINAR IN PROFESSIONAL NURSING
This is a capstone course, designed to heighten awareness of contemporary global issues and systematically assess one's own values in relation to those of the profession. Opportunity is provided for in-depth analysis of current issues within the fields of nursing knowledge (science, economics, law, social field, etc.) A scholarly paper is required.
