ABOUT THE DEGREES
NURSING ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE
The Associate Degree Nursing program prepares students who are highly educated, technically advanced, competent and caring individuals to practice professional nursing in a variety of settings. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the examination for licensure as a registered nurse (NCLEX-RN).
Currently designed to provide entry into the nursing profession, this nursing program is six quarters, not including prerequisites. The program is approved by the Washington State Nursing Commission. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to take the state board licensing exam for registered nurses. Starts fall, winter and spring quarters.
Nursing AAS graduates (RN) will:
- Be prepared for employment as registered nurses in hospitals, clinics, long term facilities, home healthcare services, schools and physicians offices.
- Be prepared to take the RN - NCLEX exam.
- Practice legal and ethical standards appropriate to the professional role of the registered nurse.
PRACTICAL NURSE CERTIFICATE
The Practical Nursing Program prepares students for employment as Practical Nurses in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, home healthcare agencies, schools and doctor's offices. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the licensing examination to become licensed practical nurses (NCLEX-PN).
Practical Nurse graduates will:
- Be prepared for employment as practical nurses in hospitals, clinics, long term facilities, home healthcare services, schools and physicians offices.
- Be prepared to take the PN - NCLEX exam.
- Practice legal and ethical standards appropriate to the technical role of the licensed practical nurse.
LWTC LPN PROGRAM PARTNERS WITH EDMONDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE
In order to accommodate additional nursing students during the academic year, LWTC partners with Edmonds Community College (EdCC) as a satellite location for the LPN program. This program will be offered as a part-time program and upon admission takes 18 months to complete. Courses for the first three quarters will be taught at EdCC, courses for the next two quarters are split between EdCC and LWTC, and the final quarter will only be taught at LWTC. The admission process is handled by EdCC.
When students graduate, their LPN certificate will be from Lake Washington Technical College.
NURSING ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE
The Nursing Assistant Program prepares students for employment as Nursing Assistants in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare agencies. Additionally, this program prepares students for continuation on into practical or registered nurse programs. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certification examination to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
HEALTH UNIT COORDINATOR CERTIFICATE
Building on the Nursing Assistant Certified program that prepares students with theory, lab skills, and an intern experience in a nursing care setting, the Health Unit Coordinator program will expand student competencies and formalize their training in a role that many of them are asked to perform on-the-job. This program of study encompasses interpersonal communication skills, medical terminology, ethical responsibilities, safe and efficient work practices, clerical skills, use of computers, interpretation and transcription of practitioner's orders, interdepartmental coordination, chart setup, cardiac monitoring systems and recognition of arrhythmias.
