MISSION
The mission of the Lamar University Department of Nursing is to educate undergraduate and graduate students to become qualified, competent, professional nurses who are prepared for practice. The Department provides quality nursing education relevant to a changing profession, society, and healthcare environment. Collaboration between faculty and students promotes excellence in health care delivery to diverse populations. A spirit of caring, continual inquiry, creativity and integrity is promoted through teaching, scholarship, leadership and service.
BACHELORS DEGREE
The BSN Program is a four year program designed to prepare professional nurse practitioners to meet community and state needs for nurses who can assume leadership in the delivery of health care.
BSN graduates are prepared to think logically by synthesizing information from various disciplines and analyzing problems critically, commensurate with the level of education. The BSN graduate functions with a longitudinal focus across time from preadmission to discharge. The BSN graduate is prepared to practice in structured, unstructured, and evolving health care settings. The focus of care is broad. The BSN graduate is prepared to deliver health care to individuals and families as clients as well as aggregates, communities and societies within the context of their environment. BSN graduates are also prepared to incorporate research findings, utilize technology, pursue graduate education and life-long learning.
Students of nursing meet course requirements through didactic courses, laboratory assignments, and clinical experience in health care facilities under supervision of University faculty. Graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) in order to receive licensure to practice professional nursing. Graduates will be required to meet criteria established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas in order to take the NCLEX-RN examination.

NURSING PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Basic principles of pathophysiology emphasizing nursing application. Topics include principles of homeostasis related to body systems. Factors that contribute to altered physiological functioning of each body system and interrelationships among selected pathophysiological processes are explored. The implications for nursing practice of common physiological alterations and pathophysiological processes throughout the lifespan are examined.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Development in skills and techniques required for a comprehensive health assessment within a legal/ethical framework. Students will learn to take client histories using structured and unstructured data collection tools to obtain physical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural, familial, occupational and environmental information. They will learn the psychomotor skills to perform assessments to identify health status and monitor for change. They will collect, validate, and report data using established assessment tools.
TRANSITION FROM VOCATIONAL TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING
Course Description: Topics include health promotion, expanded assessment, analysis of data, nursing process, pharmacology, multidisciplinary teamwork, communication, and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework throughout the lifespan. Utilizing an integrated approach and building upon the foundation of fundamental nursing knowledge and skills, the concepts of stressadaptation, human needs, therapeutic communication, nursing process, growth and development, safety, and wellness-illness are explored for individuals of all age groups. Theoretical content is implemented in the clinical environment.
CLINICAL – NURSING
A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement are the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary.
INTEGRATED CARE OF THE CLIENT WITH COMPLEX HEALTH CARE NEEDS
Application of a systematic problem-solving process and critical-thinking skills to provide comprehensive nursing care to diverse clients/families across the life span with complex health care needs including, but not limited to, complex childhood/adolescent diseases, complicated perinatal care, acute mental illness, complex perioperative care, serious adult health problems and health issues related to aging. Emphasis on tertiary disease prevention, in health maintenance/restoration and collaboration with members of the multidisciplinary health care team. Topics include the role of the nurse as client advocate and coordinator of care and applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. The course requires recognition and response to all aspects of client’s needs in the face of crises. Continuing with the integrated approach, the concepts of growth and development, therapeutic communication, stress-adaptation, safety, and wellness-illness are further explored for individuals of all age groups.

Application of client assessment skills, critical thinking, and independent nursing interventions to care for diverse clients/families throughout the life span whose health care needs may be difficult to predict. Emphasis on collaborative clinical decision-making, nursing leadership skills, and client management. Topics include the significance of professional development, trends in nursing and health care, and applicable knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. The concepts of growth and development through the life-cycle, safety, therapeutic communication, stress-adaptation, wellness-illness, and professionalism are further elaborated.

NURSING JURISPRUDENCE
A course in nursing jurisprudence and ethics with an emphasis on personal and professional responsibility. Study of laws and regulations related to the provision of safe and effective nursing care.
