The MSU College of Nursing is a an international leader in technology-assisted learning for nurses, from entry into practice through professional development, and has responded to the nursing shortage by creating curricula and learning opportunities that facilitate access to higher education. Our graduates are leaders in healthcare who anticipate and respond to the ever-changing needs of a global community. The College offers a Traditional Program, Accelerated Programs, and Graduate Programs.

MISSION

The mission of MSU's College of Nursing is to enhance the health of the community by providing excellence in nursing education, advancing the profession of nursing and serving as an advocate for optimal health care for all people. Specifically, our goals are to:

- Expand and improve our educational offerings through new web-based professional and degree programs.
- Strengthen our science and build our research capacity.
- Expand the capacity of our nursing practice to serve as a demonstration site to test interventions and healthcare delivery models, serve additional patient populations, and provide technology-supported care coordination.
- Expand the internal and external partnerships required to strengthen the linkage between research, education, and practice.

Nursing research and healthcare system needs are rapidly incorporated into education programs. Nursing education is provided in partnership with healthcare systems and faculty in active practice, influencing healthcare outcomes and evidence-based practice.

RESEARCH

The College of Nursing is nationally known for research in the management of chronic illness, from prevention to palliative care. Innovative aspects of this research include the use of technology to improve the continuity of safe, patient-centered care and the quality of patient and family outcomes. The research, teaching, and practice missions of the College interact closely and create synergy.

EXPLORING NURSING This 2 credit course provides key foundational concepts of health care and nursing. Theoretical foundations that frame the art and science of nursing will be introduced with relation to current health care issues. Practical skills and strategies for success in the nursing program and profession will be explored. TRANSITION TO BACCALAUREATE NURSING AND ONLINE LEARNING It is an on line course that examines the issues, role and scope of baccalaureate nursing practice. Concepts of and applications in online learning are also explored. INTRODUCTION TO NURSING THEORY AND RESEARCH It is designed to provide an introduction to nursing theory and research. The course will be devoted to a brief overview of nursing theory, including its development. The works of selected theorists will be introduced. Additionally, the course will focus on basic principles of research methods with the goal of assisting students to critically evaluate and utilize research articles. HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND NURSING THERAPEUTICS The study of abnormal physiological health transitions of the adult. This includes disorders affecting cells, organs, and systems involved in the regulation of structure and function within the human organism as well as how diseases affect the structures, functions, and systems of the human organism. There will be a concentration on the influence of genetics, ethnicity, environment, and age. FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE This course will introduce students to the theories and principles underlying professional nursing practice, with a focus on the concepts that are used in the College of Nursing. Students will develop a working knowledge of several interrelated concepts, including: ethical problem solving, health promotion, cultural competence and health disparities; nursing theories; and basic principles for using the research process to guide evidence based practice. CLINICAL PROBLEMS IN ADAPTATION FOR RN-BSN This course involves the integration of concepts and theories into beginning level nursing practice. The concentration will be on the examination of dynamic interrelationship between professional, scholarly nursing practice, and the health and wellness of diverse persons and populations across the life span. LEVEL I INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR This course involves the integration of concepts and theories into beginning level nursing practice. The concentration will be on the examination of dynamic interrelationship between professional, scholarly nursing practice, and the health and wellness of diverse persons and populations across the life span. ACUTE NURSING CARE OF ADULTS AND OLDER ADULTS Intensive theory and clinical course integrating foundational pharmacology, pathophysiology, and first level nursing courses. Addressing acute and chronic conditions in an acute care setting. MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHIATRIC NURSING Extension of foundational social science concepts into nursing therapeutics aimed at mental health and the care of persons with mental illnesses. Medication and non-medication interventions, group interventions, and therapeutic environments. MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHIATRIC NURSING It is an extension of foundational social science concepts into nursing therapeutics aimed at mental health and the care of persons with mental illnesses. Medication and non-medication interventions, group interventions, and therapeutic environments will be studied and demonstrated. LEVEL II INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR Integration of concepts and theories into beginning level nursing practice. Examination of dynamic interrelationship between professional, scholarly nursing practice, and the health and wellness of diverse persons and populations across the life span. Seminar will utilize a case study format to facilitate synthesis of level content and previous learning. Students will be required to come to seminar prepared to discuss the case studies in order to assimilate the concepts presented. Students will be working in groups throughout the semester. LEVEL II INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR This course provides for the integration of concepts and theories into beginning level nursing practice. Students will examine the dynamic interrelationship between professional, scholarly nursing practice, and the health and wellness of diverse persons and populations across the life span. The discussion of case studies will facilitate synthesis of level content and previous learning. COMMUNITY AND POPULATION HEALTH NURSING This course provides the theoretical foundation for contemporary community/public health nursing using the ANGEL course platform. PRACTICUM IN COMMUNITY AND POPULATION HEALTH NURSING This community health nursing practicum course provides RNs in the MSU On-line BSN Completion Program clinical experience focusing on the application of public health and nursing principles in the care of populations and individuals/families in a variety of community/public health settings, including public health departments, schools, occupational health, correctional health, and other appropriate agencies. NURSING CARE OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY Health promotion and risk assessment of individuals and families during pregnancy and birth. Therapeutic communication and assessment skills for providing holistic care to culturally diverse childbearing families during the prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Caring for mother and baby in utero and after birth. LEADERSHIP CLINICAL IMMERSION It will cover the main theories, principles, and practices of nursing leadership, management, and care delivery systems in a variety of agency settings. A systematic application of these theories and principles will occur during each student’s mentored clinical experiences and during clinical seminar activities. COMMUNITY AND POPULATION HEALTH NURSING This course provides a theoretical and practicum basis for community-oriented population nursing practice. Students will learn methods for promoting and protecting the health of the public using health promotion, risk reduction, and disease management and control strategies with vulnerable persons and populations. Community assessment, epidemiologic, environmental, change, political action, and case-management frameworks are used to guide evidence-based nursing care delivery to persons, families, and populations in community settings. LEVEL IV ROLE TRANSITION SEMINAR It is the capstone seminar integrating advanced level concepts and theories to prepare students for entry-level practice as a novice clinical nurse leader. The focus is on the dynamic interrelationship between professional scholarly nursing practice and the health and wellness of diverse populations and health care organizations. CONCEPTUAL AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS This course presents core conceptual and theoretical frameworks for all masters' nursing students. Basic philosophical tenets are used to examine the applicability of the frameworks for advanced nursing in multiple roles, such as education, practice, and administration. Selected frameworks, models and theories congruent with masters prepared nursing and drawn from nursing and other disciplines are used as exemplars. These theories will enable the student to examine personal practice assumptions currently used, and identify others consistent with practice, education, and research as a masters' prepared nurse. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSING Alterations of various physiological systems. Pathophysiology of frequently encountered primary care conditions across the life span and special populations. In-depth case analysis of risk factors, pathophysiological changes, and associated clusters of signs and symptoms. Pathophysiological theories and research as a basis for advanced practice nursing. This is not an introductory pathophysiology course. It is expected that students already have a basic understanding of pathophysiology, physical assessment, pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics. HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF THE FAMILY Intensive theory and clinical course integrating foundational pharmacology, pathophysiology, and first level nursing courses. Addressing acute and chronic conditions in an acute care setting. PRIMARY CARE MANAGEMENT OF THE FAMILY II HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF THE ADULT The second health care management course will focus on the principles and issues relevant to Advanced Practice Nurses in Primary Care. Emphasis will be placed on health care management of patients/clients across the life span with stable chronic and/or multiple complex problems utilizing clinical relevant research and evidence-based guidelines. Integration and synthesis of family frameworks/theories/models within the plan of care will be emphasized. PRIMARY CARE MANAGEMENT OF THE ADULT II The second adult health care management course will focus on the principles and issues relevant to Advanced Practice Nurses in Primary Care. Emphasis will be placed on health care management of patients/clients from young adult to elderly with stable chronic and/or multiple complex problems utilizing clinical relevant research and evidence-based guidelines. Integration and synthesis of family frameworks/theories/models within the plan of care will be emphasized. KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPING IN NURSING Development and growth of substantive knowledge within nursing. Middle range theories. Strategies for concept development and theory testing in nursing research for understanding health status and health outcomes for individuals, families and community-based primary care. NURSING RESEARCH SEMINAR I The focus of the seminar is to: 1) provide socialization to doctoral study and the research environment; 2) foster students’ development as a clinical researcher; and 3) facilitate immersion into the research process. It is designed to provide on-going dialogue among PhD students and faculty related to doctoral study as well as the role and responsibilities of the clinical nurse researcher. Seminars will address some of the pragmatic facets of the research process and environment that are not a part of formal coursework. Discussion will facilitate integration of coursework into research and build understanding of the development of a program of research.
