Moravian College - St. Luke's School of Nursing




Founded in 1872, St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem is a vital part of Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. An integral, regional health care network, St. Luke's offers a full range of medical and surgical services, maternal-child care, and psychiatric services. St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network was recently ranked by Solucient for the second time - for its excellence in quality of care, efficiency of operations and sustainability of overall performance.

The sixth oldest college in the nation and founded by the Moravian church, the college today educates a socially and religiously diverse group of students. Moravian College values a liberal arts education as a preparation for life and productive work.

PROCESS AND INQUIRY: A HEALTH CARE PERSPECTIVE
An introduction to the process of knowledge acquisition in relation to health care concepts. The focus is on developing students' intellectual capabilities as independent thinkers. Critical thinking is the basis for open inquiry into assumptions, beliefs and values about health care. Students will utilize a variety of active strategies to explore concepts and issues related to health care. Course open to non-nursing majors.

DIMENSIONS OF HEALTH CARE
An explanation of health care in the 21st century and beyond. Health and care delivery systems will be analyzed through perspectives in economics, public policy, ethics, demographics, and evolving issues. Course open to non-nursing majors.

DYNAMICS OF THE NURSING PROFESSION
An introduction to the discipline of nursing with a framework of the past leading into futuristic nursing concepts. Professional nursing is explored through examination of theoretical models with an emphasis on systems and caring. Professional ethics and practice standards will serve to guide the delivery of nursing care to individuals and groups.

HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT
A clinical practicum in the techniques of physical, psychosocial, functional, spiritual, and cultural assessments. Assessments will be performed in a variety of practicum settings and will include individuals and families across the life span during various states of health. Students will utilize the data collected for an interpretive analysis of health status.

QUEST INTO PHENOMENOLOGY OF NURSING
A clinical practicum course which provides an interface with the lived experience of humanity as part of a system. Student experience nursing role behaviors of the practitioner, counselor, educator, advocate, collaborator, and coordinator in various settings.

QUEST TOWARD INDIVIDUAL WELL-BEING
A clinical practicum course which applies the concepts of health and well-being for individuals across the life span. Students develop a foundation for holistic nursing practice utilizing physical and psychosocial skills to plan and deliver nursing care.

EMBRACING THE DYNAMIC FAMILY
A clinical practicum course which provides a foundation to facilitate family growth and development throughout the life span and across generations. Students experience nursing role behaviors in addressing health needs in a variety of family systems.

EMBRACING THE CHALLENGED FAMILY
A clinical practicum course which emphasizes integration of knowledge to facilitate the family in meeting their challenges across the life span. Students analyze physical, mental and emotional challenges to the family system to provide holistic nursing care.

EMBRACING THE DYNAMIC COMMUNITY
A clinical practicum course which provides a foundation to facilitate community partnerships and collaboration in promoting health and accessing care. Students experience nursing role behaviors in a multiplicity of health care situations within the community.

EMBRACING THE CHALLENGED COMMUNITY
A clinical practicum course that examines a multiplicity of at-risk populations and those who are challenged by acute and chronic physical, communicate and mental disorders prevalent in the community. Students analyze community responses to episodic interruptions of health and experience collaborative health care delivery. This course includes an international component.

APPLIED RESEARCH IN NURSING
A clinical practicum course in which the student collaborates with a nurse researcher in an ongoing nursing research project during one or more of the investigative phases. Students develop insight into process and applications of research in nursing practice.

THE PROFESSIONAL NURSE
A clinical practicum course in which the students establish the role as a professional nurse. The student transitions to an entry level practitioner by incorporating concepts of autonomy, interdependency, leadership and collaboration.

NURSING ELECTIVES
Nursing electives are offered in specialty areas of nursing practice. The specific course content is determined by the Department Chairperson based on student interests, faculty availability, and other Department resources. Three of the departmental electives appear below

NURSING OF POPULATIONS AT HIGH RISK FOR HEALTH PROBLEMS: HONDURAS
This nursing elective course seeks to facilitate the senior level student’s understanding of a specific population of people at high risk for health problems. The population may be found in any location. International placement for this course experience is encouraged.

INTEGRATED THERAPIES IN HEALTH
A seminar course that examines selected complementary and alternative therapies. Issues related to the integration of complementary therapies into health care and development of a nursing perspective on utilization of complementary therapies for treatment and healing will be discussed. Selected opportunities for clinical experience and field study may be included.

GLOBALIZATION OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING: AUSTRALIA
This nursing elective course seeks to explore the globalization of professional nursing in specific countries. Faculty approve the country context of choice. Students practice in the country under the supervision of RN clinical mentors.
