Mount Mercy College

One of the first baccalaureate programs in Iowa, the Department of Nursing was founded in 1969 to provide a professional education for students seeking a four-year degree. The department's natural and behavioral sciences curriculum is enhanced by the liberal arts core of the college curriculum and continues the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy in serving human need. As they educate the student for general practice and community nursing, faculty members emphasize the leadership role of the professional nurse and foster an appreciation for lifelong learning through advanced education and continuing professional development.

The program is housed in the Donnelly Center with offices, laboratories and classrooms in close proximity. Students also have experiences in nearby hospitals and other health facilities.

Approximately 300 students are enrolled in the nursing major. Twelve full-time and additional adjunct faculty allow the faculty-student ratio of 1:6 in most clinical settings. Many agencies in the city provide opportunities for clinical experience in acute and community care. Students also provide services which would not otherwise exist in a parish nursing program, two health promotion centers in parochial schools, and in physical assessment clinics for senior citizens in a neighboring county.

The Department of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Students may enter the program as first year students or transfer students. Full-time or part-time study is available with flexibility in scheduling, especially for general education courses. An articulation program for RN-students who wish to complete a baccalaureate degree is also available in collaboration with Iowa Articulation in Nursing Education Agreement.

MISSION
The Mount Mercy College Department of Nursing, in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, is dedicated to service in meeting human needs where they exist. The mission of the department is to educate baccalaureate level students as beginning practitioners of professional nursing. The curriculum reflects the importance of the Judeo-Christian tradition, of human beings’ ability to reason, of the liberal arts, and of the behavioral and biological sciences as a basis for professional nursing. The department views persons as holistic beings possessing biophysical, psychosocial, and spiritual components.

Persons interact within a culturally and ethnically diverse environment and are influenced in their efforts to learn and to exercise choices regarding their health. Health is viewed as a state and process in which a person fluctuates on a continuum from optimal wellness to illness to eventual death.

Nurses function with responsibility and accountability in a variety of roles and settings. They are guided by values, attitudes, personal qualities, and professional standards as they demonstrate ethical and caring behavior. Nurses use critical thinking, communication, and therapeutic nursing interventions to empower persons to meet their health care needs. Aware of the dynamic expansions of knowledge and technology and of the changing face of health care delivery, the Mount Mercy College Department of Nursing prepares its graduates to make informed personal and professional decisions that allow them to practice effectively and creatively in a complex global society.
