The National University School of Health and Human Services was formed to address the growing need for trained health care professionals in California and throughout the country. As the shortage of health care professionals, educators, managers, and administrators continues to expand, National University provides the training and degree programs to prepare students for careers in these rewarding fields.
The School of Health and Human Services combines several successful certificate and degree programs and will introduce a host of new programs over the next several years. The Department of Nursing offers multiple levels of nursing education and degree programs, including associate's and bachelor's, and certificate programs.
The Department of Community Health provides students the opportunity to use an interdisciplinary approach to explore current and future health issues facing public and private entities. The Master of Health Care Administration offers students an excellent opportunity to focus their graduate study in one of the largest industries in the United States.
An additional component of the School of Health and Human Services is the Department of Health Sciences which prepares graduate and undergraduate students for professional careers to meet the changing demands of today's health care industry. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in allied healath designed to articulate with health professional programs at community colleges to provide graduates the opportunity to advance in the allied health profession and meet societal and health care delivery needs.
Many of our Health and Human Services degree and certificate programs are already in place at National University campuses throughout the state. As the school continues to grow, we'll be adding more programs, campuses and online degrees to meet our students' educational goals and the growing market mandate for health care professionals.

FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE
Utilizing the nursing process framework, this course focuses on meeting basic human needs through planning and implementing nursing care to effectively contribute to achievement of health goals of the patient. This course covers beginning knowledge and skills required for nursing care of patients with commonly occurring health problems are emphasized. Basic concepts of therapeutic communication are discussed.
FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE: CLINICAL LABORATORY
Using the language of nursing, students will devise basic plans of care for patients. This course includes practical application of beginning knowledge and skills required for nursing care of patients with commonly occurring health problems is demonstrated in both laboratory and clinical settings. Through simulation and patient interaction, use of therapeutic skills of communication will be analyzed.
NURSING PROCESS I: MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING I
The course focuses on concepts relating to care of the adult in the acute care setting with commonly occurring medical-surgical problems. Emphasis of this course is on the use of the nursing process and in developing competence in providing nursing care for individuals with specific health care needs/problems. In addition, the student is provided with an orientation to coordination of patient care.
NURSING PROCESS I: MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING I CLINICAL LABORATORY
This course focuses on the practical application of knowledge and skills required for nursing care of adult patients with commonly occurring medical-surgical problems is demonstrated in both laboratory and clinical settings. Using the language of nursing, students will devise and implement care plans and teaching plans.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT CLINICAL LABORATORY
This course covers practical application of holistic health assessment as the basis for nursing intervention and practice, interviewing skills, health history, physical examination, cultural variations and laboratory and diagnostic procedures throughout the lifespan of clients.

MAKING THE TRANSITION TO THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL NURSE
An exploration of the role of the professional nurse for the independent duty corpsman (IDC). Compares the role of the professional nurse with other health care roles. Focuses on nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, nursing intervention and evaluation. Includes a required clinical practicum.

An overview of the practicing role of the professional nurse. Focuses on assuming responsibility for the nursing care of complex clients in an acute care setting. Includes a required clinical practicum.
PROFESSIONAL NURSING VALUES
An introduction to fundamental values as a foundation for professional nursing practice. This course provides registered nurses with an understanding of key components necessary for demonstration of professional value-based behaviors. The concept of caring will be examined through the values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice.

Continuing the study of life processes, this course focuses on the health care needs of parents and newborns during the childbearing experience. Introducing the concept of the family as a unit, emphasis is placed on the variations in health care due to behavioral, life cycle, physiological, cultural, and environmental factors.

NURSING PROCESS III: PEDIATRIC NURSING
Continuing examination of the family as a unit, this course focuses on nursing care related to the health needs of families with children. Emphasis is placed on the variations in health care due to behavioral, life cycle, genetic, cultural, and environmental factors.
NURSING PROCESS III: PEDIATRIC NURSING CLINICAL LABORATORY
This course covers practical application of knowledge and skills required in nursing care for families with children. Using the language of nursing, students will care for the family with children as a unit, considering behavioral, life cycle, genetic, cultural and environmental factors.
NURSING PROCESS IV: MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING II
This course focuses on concepts relating to care of the adult in the acute care setting with medical-surgical problems. In addition, urgent and critical nursing care responses to symptomatology are addressed. Emphasis is on refining use of the nursing process to provide nursing care for individuals with specific health care needs/problems.
NURSING PROCESS IV: MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING II CLINICAL LABORATORY
Practical application of knowledge and skills required for nursing care of adult patients with commonly occurring acute/critical medical-surgical problems is demonstrated in both laboratory and clinical settings.
INTRODUCTION TO BIOMEDICAL STATISTICS
An introduction to statistical procedures commonly used in the analysis of nursing research data. Teaches the utilization of computers and statistical software in the analysis of data.
NURSING PROCESS V: PSYCHOSOCIAL NURSING
This course demonstrates the relevance of psychosocial nursing concepts to all areas of professional practice. It provides a conceptual integration of the nursing process, theories, and research from the biopsychosocial sciences and humanities to promote mental health and provide care to elderly people and people with mental disorders.
NURSING PROCESS V: PSYCHOSOCIAL NURSING CLINICAL LABORATORY
This course covers practical application of knowledge and skills required for nursing care of older adult and mentally ill patients with commonly occurring problems is demonstrated in both laboratory and clinical settings.
NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
The primary purpose of this course is to facilitate the development of a broad view of the management of health care delivery systems and the nurse's role in that arena.
NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT CLINICAL LABORATORY
This course covers practical application of skills and knowledge required to coordinate care for multiple patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
THEORETICAL MODELS AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORKS AS A BASIS FOR NURSING PRACTICE
This course facilitates the practice of professional nursing by providing students with an opportunity to experiment with the application of various conceptual models in order to evaluate the impact of conceptual models on nursing practice.
PHARMACOLOGY FOR NURSES
In this course, students will synthesize pharmacological concepts. An overview of the history of drugs will be presented along with current issues in drug legislation, design, testing, manufacturing, and marketing. Utilizing drug terminology, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, contraindications and precautions for prototype drugs for multiple body systems will be discussed. Major emphasis will be placed on nursing management practices that minimize adverse effects and maximize therapeutic effects for patients, including the role of the nurse in pharmacological research.
NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY: POPULATION FOCUSED PRACTICE
A study of community health nursing concepts as they apply to the health of individuals. Explores the nursing care of individuals in the community using primary, secondary and tertiary models of therapeutic intervention. This course includes a required clinical practicum.
NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY: FRAMEWORKS FOR PRACTICE
A study of providing nursing care to families in the community. Explores nursing care using primary, secondary and tertiary models of intervention. This course includes a required clinical practicum.
NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY: HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
A study of community health nursing concepts as they apply to the health of groups and the community at large. Explores nursing care using primary, secondary and tertiary models of intervention. This course includes a required clinical practicum.
INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH
This course will introduce students to quantitative and qualitative research in nursing by reviewing and evaluating current research studies which use descriptive, correlational, experimental and selected qualitative designs. Throughout the course, an emphasis will be placed on the philosophical underpinnings of the quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. Students will also have the opportunity to critique pertinent research for utilization in nursing practice.
ISSUES IN PROFESSIONAL NURSING
A capstone course that explores the historical roots and current catalysts of complex issues of nursing education, practice and scholarship. Also analyzes multiple interpretations of selected issues and strategies for resolving issues.
