Northern Illinois University (School of Nursing)

NIU’s School of Nursing is proud to be a vibrant and extensive department within NIU—a Carnegie Doctoral/Research - Extensive institution. We offer undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing at NIU’s main DeKalb campus and at regional northwestern Illinois sites. Many of our courses are also offered online.

NIU’s basic undergraduate nursing program is one of the finest in the country. We are proud to announce a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN exam for the last reporting period. We consistently have a pass rate of around 95%. One hundred and forty students are accepted each spring to start nursing courses in fall and spring semesters. The school has full time laboratory and advising personnel and conducts orientation sessions for new students, all of which facilitate the nursing school experience here at NIU. The school is also generously supported by alumni and other donors who have provided multiple sources of scholarship funding as well as other support.

NIU’s RN-BS nursing program is designed with respect for knowledge already attained and understanding of the real world of working RNs. In this recently redesigned program, real work issues are addressed as students develop their new level of nursing care. This program is offered primarily on-line or at multiple sites for face-to-face interaction. These sites include: Harper College, Kishwaukee College; Dreyer Medical Clinic, Aurora; Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington; and Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village. RN degree completion students are welcomed at any of these sites. Additionally, we hold introductory face-to-face course of our primarily online RN-BS completion program at Sherman Hospital in Elgin and at the Rock Valley Community College in Rockford.

NIU’s advance practice graduate nursing programs prepare nurses to be either Family Nurse Practitioners, Adult Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, or Nurse Educators. The graduate programs are designed for working adults. Many courses are offered online as well as face to face, classes are held on Saturdays or in the evenings, and where possible are held back to back to facilitate students who want to take two courses with the least time spent in travel. In addition, NIU offers 2 post-master’s certificate programs: Family Nurse Practitioner and Nursing Education. The school has maintained very high pass rates on all the certifying examinations, with the FNP program consistently being at a 100% pass rate.
