Old Dominion University (School of Nursing)




Old Dominion University, founded in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, is located in Norfolk, Virginia, in the center of Hampton Roads, the hub of the world’s largest natural harbor. Old Dominion College was granted independence from William and Mary in 1962 and became Old Dominion University in 1969. The University’s main campus occupies 200 acres situated between the Elizabeth and Lafayette Rivers. The campus has gardens, tree-lined walkways, a reflecting pool and more than 30 academic buildings.

The School of Nursing is housed in the newly renovated Health Science’s Building (formerly Technology Building) located on Hampton Boulevard, between 46th and 47th streets. State of the art equipment, educational models, Fundamentals and Health Assessment Laboratories and mediated classrooms enhance the learning experiences of nursing majors. Clinical practice sites throughout the Hampton Roads area augment the practice component of undergraduate nursing education and include general, specialty, public, private, military and community health care facilities. The graduate program has clinical practice sites throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Nation.

The development of the School of Nursing began in 1962 when the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion College approved the establishment of a program of Nursing. In 1963, a department of nursing was established within the School of Arts and Sciences. By 1967, the first two nursing students graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and, in 1968, the program was granted accreditation by the Virginia State Board of Nursing. By this time, the School of Arts and Sciences had separated into two schools: The Department of Nursing remained within the newly designated School of Sciences and Health Professions.

In 1970, Old Dominion College was renamed Old Dominion University, reflecting the expansion of available academic programs and degrees.

In 1975, the Department of Nursing sought and was granted accreditation for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program by the National League for Nursing (NLN). Accreditation was expanded in 1982 to cover the new Master of Science with a concentration in nursing program as well as the baccalaureate program.

In 1986, the School of Sciences and Health Professions separated into two different colleges; the Department of Nursing became the School of Nursing within the College of Health Sciences. In the fall of 1991, the school of Nursing was again awarded the maximum eight-year accreditation by the NLN. In 1999 the School of Nursing was again awarded the maximum eight-year accreditation by the NLN and ten-year accreditation by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). As has been true from its inception, the School of Nursing does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race or religion.

The School of Nursing at Old Dominion University offers two professional degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

BSN
The baccalaureate degree (BSN) is offered to two distinct student populations; pre-licensure students and post-licensure (Registered Nurse) students. The nursing major in the pre-licensure curriculum is available in two formats: a traditional three-academic year schedule and an accelerated two-calendar year schedule. The flexible scheduling options allows the School of Nursing to meet the needs of students with varying educations backgrounds and lifestyles. The post-licensure curriculum is offered on campus, via TELETECHNET, and in online courses to registered nurses. The TELETECHNET format allows RN students to attend televised courses (one-way video, two-way audio) in a variety of sites (often local community colleges) across the Commonwealth and the United States. The Online option allows students to access courses in the major and upper division requirements via the internet. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for students in each of these educational formats leads to the achievement of the same educational objectives, although there is some variation in the sequencing and learning experiences designed to meet the adult learner needs.

MSN
The Master of Science in Nursing degree prepares graduates in advanced practice nursing and leadership. These tracks include Family Nurse Practitioner, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwifery, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Educator and Nurse Leader. There are also program s for certified nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists to obtain the MSN as well as post-MSN programs for advanced practice education . Courses leading to specific MSN role preparations are available in a variety of formats including TELETECHNET and Online.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT CLINICAL LABORATORY.
This clinical laboratory course emphasizes the assessment phase of the nursing process. Skill acquisition in health assessment and health history interviewing is facilitated by supervised practice, faculty demonstration, and self-paced learning in the audio-visual laboratory.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING PRACTICE.
This clinical course emphasizes the supervised application of health assessment skills, nursing process, and clinical nursing techniques in clinical laboratory and acute care settings. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

HEALTH ASSESSMENT
This course emphasizes the physical assessment phase of the nursing process. For registered nurse students only.

THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
This course focuses on selected nursing models, concepts, and theories as supporting frameworks for professional nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of nursing theory as a methodology for improving nursing practice in various client situations and practice settings. For registered nurse students only.

THERAPEUTIC DIETS I
This course focuses on concepts of normal nutrition. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of various nutrients on the body.

THERAPEUTIC DIETS II
This course builds upon Therapeutic Diets I and introduces the student to selected therapeutic diets. Emphasis is placed on restrictive diets associated with maternal-infant and selected medical-surgical processes.

THERAPEUTIC DIETS III
This course focuses on therapeutic diets associated with selected medical/surgical and pediatric disease processes.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING I
This lecture course focuses on the adult client experiencing alteration and/or adaptations in bodily defense mechanisms. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to assist adult clients to adapt to the body’s breakdown of defense mechanisms.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT: ADULT HEALTH NURSING I
This clinical course focuses on the nursing process with adult clients experiencing alterations/adaptations in bodily defense mechanisms. The concepts inclusive in the didactic component (Adult Health Nursing I) will be actualized on general surgical nursing units and oncology units. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

NURSING CARE OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY
This lecture course focuses on the theoretical and applied concepts related to the care of families experiencing pregnancy and childbirth. Emphasis is on the dynamic familial, societal, psychologic and physiologic changes which occur in this stage of family and personal development. The role of the nurse as assistive and family-centered provider of care is a major focus.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY
This clinical course provides the opportunity for planning and provision of nursing care to the childbearing family. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to plan, provide and coordinate quality care. Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility and accountability for personal actions as well as a respect for families and clients. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

ADULT HEALTH NURSING II
This lecture course focuses on the adult experiencing alteration/adaptation in organ and system mechanisms. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to assist adult clients to adapt to system related insults.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT: ADULT HEALTH NURSING II
This clinical course focuses on the nursing process with adult clients experiencing alterations/adaptations in organ and system mechanisms. Concepts emphasized in the didactic component (Adult Health Nursing II) will be actualized on general medical nursing units and orthopedic surgical units. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

PSYCHIATRIC/MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
This lecture course focuses on psychotherapeutic processes across the lifespan. Building on foundations from the social and behavioral sciences, emphasis is on the use of the nursing process in providing care to clients with acute and chronic illness in a variety of psychiatric settings.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF PSYCHIATRIC/MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
This clinical course provides a mechanism for students to perform mental health assessments, plan nursing care, practice therapeutic communication techniques and observe group processes in both inpatient and outpatient settings. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL NURSING
The study of selected topics in professional nursing practice; designed to provide an in-depth exploration of current nursing issues. Topic titles denoted in Guide to Enrollment each semester.

NURSING SCIENCE
This course focuses on the theories and concepts utilized in the scientific investigation of nursing practice. Content emphasizes the development of skills necessary to be a consumer of nursing research.

PRACTICUM: STUDIES IN CLINICAL NURSING PRACTICE
The study of selected clinical practice applications in professional nursing practice; designed to provide an in-depth practicum in selected nursing practice areas. Students must have specific practicum arrangements (ex: externship) prior to registration.

NURSING PROCESS AND DRUG THERAPY I
This course addresses the general principles of drug therapy and beginning application of the nursing process as related to drug therapy for clinical situations involving individuals at all phases of the life cycle and at different levels of wellness.

CLINICAL NURSING CONCEPTS I
This advanced placement credit is awarded to the registered nurse who has demonstrated knowledge of selected basic clinical nursing concepts for the provision of nursing care to individuals experiencing health deviations. Awarded upon completion of 14 credits in major. Registered nurse students only.

CAREER PATHWAY: ASSESSMENT
This course focuses on basic skills required for success in the post-licensure baccalaureate nursing program. Emphasis is placed on career pathway assessment. Selected skills to be acquired include development of a professional portfolio, use of computers, APA professional writing format, library use and professional communication strategies. For registered nurse students only.

CAREER PATHWAY: DEVELOPMENT
This course focuses on further development of the post-licensure baccalaureate nursing student with an emphasis on expanding critical thinking skills, teaching-learning theories and application, professional resume development and exploration of nursing specialties and practice roles. For registered nursing students only.

CAREER PATHWAY: EXPANDING HORIZONS
This course facilitates the completion of a professional portfolio for the post-licensure baccalaureate nursing student. Emphasis is on advanced professional communication strategies and reflective processes for professional role expansion and development. For registered nurse students only.

NURSING CARE OF INFANTS AND CHILDREN
This lecture course provides a basis for understanding the nursing care of children of various ages. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to assist children as they encounter acute and chronic illness. The nurse’s communication with and education of the family and child as individuals or as part of a group are discussed as a means of achieving the goal of comprehensive individualized child care in the home and in health care settings.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF INFANTS AND CHILDREN
This clinical course emphasizes the provision of nursing care to infants and children suffering from acute and chronic illnesses. Through the use of the nursing process, students provide and coordinate care, serving as client advocates. Students are expected to demonstrate responsibility for personal actions related to the practice of nursing. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

NURSING AND THE GERONTOLOGICAL CLIENT
This course focuses on the nursing needs of the gerontological client. Emphasis is on the multi/complex needs of the older adult.

TRANSITION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
This capstone clinical course allows students to practice in selected areas. The focus of this practicum is to enhance the clinical decision making and nursing intervention skills of the senior student. (qualifies as a CAP experience)

NURSING PROCESS IN REHABILITATION.
This course focuses on using the nursing process to prevent further dependence and restore maximum levels of function to the client who has a physical disability.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT OF REHABILITATION CLIENTS

ADULT HEALTH NURSING III
This course focuses on the adaptation of clients to critical illness. Content emphasizes concepts and theories of crisis and the utilization of the nursing process with critically ill clients who require assistance in adapting to their condition.

DEVELOPING CASE MANAGEMENT SKILLS: CLINICAL PATHWAYS AND OUTCOMES
The focus of this course is twofold; exploration and discussion of the historical and theoretical contexts of the emergence and value of case management, clinical pathways and clinical outcomes measurement in nursing practice; and the practical application of the principles operative in case management, the development of clinical paths, and outcomes measurement.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING I
This course focuses on family and community health nursing. Content emphasizes concepts and themes of families and communities and the use of the nursing process to assist in promoting and maintaining health. Application of course concepts through experience and interactions with health care coalition groups is emphasized.
