Palm Beach Atlantic University (School of Nursing)




The School of Nursing offers you a (GAP) guaranteed acceptance program if you enroll as a freshman and maintain certain minimum criteria. We offer a Baccalaureate of Nursing (BSN) and the curriculum is spread over five semesters (2.5 years).

Or, you can apply to the nursing upper division in the first semester of your sophomore year. If accepted, you'll take three nursing courses in the second semester of your sophomore year. Our exciting courses include Human Anatomy, Chemistry, Nursing of Families and Communities and many more.

Upper Division nursing students are leaders of the Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF), PBA Student Nursing Association (PBASNA) and Social Committee. Lower Division nursing students may be members of the NCF and Social Committee.

We offer state-of-the-art technology to enhance student learning including simulation labs, computerized testing and a variety of computer learning activities in the computer lab and online for convenient studying at home.

As a graduate of the PBA School of Nursing, you'll also be required to purchase and use PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) that will provide you with essential clinical resources.

INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING
This course is an overview of the nursing profession for nursing majors and for those considering nursing as a major. The Christian, historical, professional, philosophical, theoretical, scientific, educational, legal, and ethical bases of the nursing profession are presented as well as contemporary nursing opportunities and the realities of nursing practice in various settings in the 21st century.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY & PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS I
Part I of a comprehensive study of human pathophysiology and the application of pharmacotherapeutics appropriate to the professional nurse role. Application of pathophysiologic and pharmacotherapeutic processes to the care and promotion of optimal person stability across the lifespan are discussed. Major drug classes and prototypical drugs are presented with specific application to nursing care within the nursing process.

TECHNICAL SKILLS FOR NURSING PRACTICE
Applies nursing concepts and knowledge to the learning of essential nursing skills in the laboratory using simulated practice situations. Selected health assessment techniques are introduced. Focuses on the scientific rationale, critical thinking, and competence in the implementation of skills of prevention as interventions within the nursing process.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Uses the nursing process with an emphasis on assessment, based on the Neuman Systems Model, to determine the health status of diverse individuals across the lifespan. Communication skills, interview techniques, health history, and physical exam skills are introduced. Opportunities to apply health assessment skills, documentation, and critical thinking for nursing care planning are provided.

FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ART OF NURSING: THEORY
Applies previous knowledge from the liberal arts, sciences, and humanities to nursing care and builds upon basic nursing concepts from the introduction to professional nursing course. Presents the Neuman Systems Model as the conceptual framework and the nursing process as the methodology used to promote optimal person stability across the lifespan. Introduces selected nursing theory and concepts in the provider of care role that affords wholistic nursing care to individuals. Promotes critical thinking and decision making in the provision of culturally sensitive care.

FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ART OF NURSING: PRACTICUM
Integrates the use of the Neuman Systems Model as the conceptual framework and the nursing process as the methodology in the promotion of optimal person stability in the care of adults and elderly. Relates selected nursing theory and concepts in the novice provider of care role that affords wholistic nursing care to individuals. Promotes critical thinking and decision making in the provision of culturally sensitive care.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH CHRONICAND ACUTE STRESSORS I: THEORY
Part I of a comprehensive study that builds on the concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, and the disease process for diverse adult and older adult populations and their affected families. Applies the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model with a focus on prevention as interventions for potential, acute, and chronic health care problems in the promotion of optimal person stability.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH CHRONICAND ACUTE STRESSORS I: PRACTICUM
Part I of a comprehensive practicum that builds on the concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, and the disease process for diverse adult and older adult populations and their affected families. Implements the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model with a focus on prevention as interventions for health care problems in the promotion of optimal person stability. The novice professional role of the nurse is developed as students practice in multiple clinical settings and care for persons experiencing acute and chronic stressors.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY & PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS II
Part II of a comprehensive study of human pathophysiology and the application of pharmacotherapeutics appropriate to the professional nurse role and builds on the acquired knowledge from Pathophysiology & Pharmacotherapeutics I. Students will demonstrate a cumulative knowledge of the application of pathophysiologic and pharmacotherapeutic processes to the care and promotion of optimal person stability across the lifespan. Major drug classes and prototypical drugs are presented with specifi c application to nursing care within the nursing process. Dosage calculation is integral to the course.

NURSING SCIENCE: RESEARCH
Provides an overview of knowledge development and a focus on the research process and critique. The importance of the integration of nursing research fi ndings in professional nursing practice is emphasized.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH CHRONIC & ACUTE STRESSORS II: THEORY
Part II of a comprehensive study that builds on Nursing of Persons with Chronicand
Acute Stressors I: Theory and the concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, and the disease process for adults and families. Applies the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model and the use of prevention as interventions for potential, acute, and chronic health care problems in the promotion of optimal person stability.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH CHRONIC & ACUTE STRESSORS II: PRACTICUM
Part II of a comprehensive practicum builds on Nursing of Persons with Chronic & Acute Stressors II: Practicum and the concepts of health promotion, disease prevention, and the disease process for adult persons and families. Applies the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model and the use of interventions for prevention of health care problems in the promotion of optimal person stability. The novice professional role of the nurse is further developed as students practice in multiple clinical settings and care for persons experiencing potential, acute and chronic stressors.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHIATRIC STRESSORS: THEORY
Mental health theories and concepts are introduced as necessary to the development of therapeutic relationships with individuals, families, and at risk groups who have actual and potential mental health stressors. The Neuman Systems Model and the nursing process are used to develop nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal client/client system stability. Critical thinking, therapeutic use of self, and communication skills are emphasized.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH MENTAL-HEALTH & PSYCHIATRIC STRESSORS: PRACTICUM
Focuses on the implementation of therapeutic relationships with individuals, families, and at risk groups who have actual and potential mental health stressors. Mental health theories, the Neuman Systems Model, and the nursing process are used to develop nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal client/client system stability. Critical thinking, therapeutic use of self, and communication skills are emphasized. Practicum sites include community and acute care settings.

NURSING OF CHILDBEARINGFAMILIES & CHILDREN: THEORY
Theory and concepts important to the care of the childbearing family and children are presented. Potential and actual stressors experienced by women, children, and families during the childbearing years are examined. The Neuman Systems Model and nursing process are used to develop culturally competent nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal wellness.

NURSING OF CHILDBEARING FAMILIESAND CHILDREN: PRACTICUM
Provides identification of actual and potential stressors experienced by women, children, and families during the childbearing years. The Neuman Systems Model and nursing process are used to develop and implement culturally competent nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal wellness.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH COMPLEX & CRITICAL CARE STRESSORS: THEORY
Introduces critical care concepts and advanced technical skills. Applies the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model, to individuals and families experiencing acute and complex care needs. Critical thinking skills are refi ned as the specifi c needs of adults with acute and critical systems stressors, which may be life threatening, are considered. The focus is on the adult patient although the family and community systems are also included. Ethical and end-of –life issues specifi c to the critical care environment are explored.

NURSING OF PERSONS WITH COMPLEX & CRITICAL CARE STRESSORS: PRACTICUM
Implements critical care concepts and advanced technical skills. Applies the nursing process, based on the Neuman Systems Model, to individuals and families experiencing acute and complex care needs. Critical thinking skills are refined as the specific needs of adults with acute and critical systems stressors, which may be life threatening, are considered. The focus is on the advanced beginner nursing care of adult patients although the family and community systems are also included. Ethical and end-of –life issues specific to the critical care environment are explored. Provides experience in the complex nursing care of clients in step-down units, intensive care units, and emergency departments.

PROFESSIONAL NURSING: LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
Provides leadership and management theories as professional behaviors within the evolving health care system are examined. Wholistic systems and critical thinking, collegiality, collaboration, and continued professional growth are addressed as essential to decision-making in the professional role.

NURSING OF FAMILIES & COMMUNITIES: THEORY
Theories and concepts of community based nursing with emphasis on health promotion and prevention of family and population based health problems are introduced. Students examine actual and potential stressors experienced by client/client systems in community settings across the lifespan. Students study actual and potential stressors experienced by client/client systems in the global health arena in addition to their local community. The nursing process is used to introduce nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal client/client system stability at both the global and local levels.

NURSING OF FAMILIES & COMMUNITIES: PRACTICUM
Theories and concepts of community based nursing with emphasis on health promotion and prevention of families and population based health problems are applied. Students identify actual and potential stressors experienced by client/client systems in community settings across the lifespan. The Neuman Systems Model and the nursing process are used to implement nursing actions to retain, attain, and maintain optimal client/client system stability in practice settings.

STRESS MANAGEMENT
A wholistic synthesis of knowledge and application of stress management. Integration of systems thinking compliments experiential learning of common stress management techniques and their worldview implications. Stress management for both patient and healthcare provider is explored. Availability: Fall or Spring

END-OF-LIFE ISSUES & CONCEPTS
Theories and strategies related to concepts of care at the end-oflife are presented. The emphasis is on the nurse as a member of an interdisciplinary team and the need for attention to cultural and spiritual factors influencing care at the end-of-life. There is currently a wide gap between the reality of end-of-life care, and the kind of care each would seek. This course is a guide to prepare nurses to be competent and compassionate professionals who can lead a transformation in care at the end-of-life.

WHOLISTIC NURSING CARE: CAPSTONE PRACTICUM
Focuses on role development and synthesis of nursing knowledge in selected potential practice sites. Students create their own objectives and are paired with a nurse preceptor to become competent professional nurses.
