Prairie View A&M University is known as an institution that “Produces Productive People.” The College of Nursing has produced many distinguished graduates who have received local, regional, and national recognition for their accomplishments as professional nurses. The exemplary performance of Prairie View A&M College of Nursing graduates has earned them positions in many capacities to include staff nurses, inventors, occupational health nurses, researchers, tenured professors, schools of nursing administrators, entrepreneurs, and CEOs of major companies, to name a few. For example, the first male graduate of Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing developed and patented the “3C Tracheotomy and Nasal Suctioning Kit” which is used in medical centers throughout the nation and other countries. Another graduate was the first nurse to serve as President and CEO of one of the largest county hospital districts in the South. Still other graduates have served as directors of school health and city health departments. The current president of the National Black Nurses Association is a graduate of Prairie View A&M College of Nursing

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The baccalaureate program is designed to meet the needs of generic students, who are beginning their education in nursing, and also to provide an opportunity for diploma or associate degree registered nurses (RNs) to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. The curriculum requirements are the same for the generic, LVN and RN student groups, but the program methodology to achieve degree requirements differs. The baccalaureate program in nursing is designed to meet the needs of students who choose nursing as a major as freshmen; registered nurses who hold a diploma or associate degree in nursing; and., also for licensed vocational nurses. The curriculum requirements are the same for all student groups, however, the program’s methodology varies to meet the needs of the learner.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The Master of Science in Nursing Degree Program builds upon baccalaureate nursing education. Students have opportunities to practice using the latest health care research and technology. The program’s curriculum is organized to provide advanced content and clinical experiences that will prepare graduates as advanced practice nurses to deliver primary health care and services to individuals, families, groups and communities.

The MSN program is designed to be completed in five (5) semesters for full-time study or may be pursued part-time over eight (8) semesters. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume specialized advanced practice nursing roles, servicing in urban and rural settings, and also meet the requirements to continue their education for doctoral study. Two additional graduate level concentrations that are currently under review to be offered are: Nursing Education which will provide baccalaureate prepared nurses to teach in a variety of settings including the teaching of patients and families, nursing students, nursing staff and health consumers; and Nursing Administration which will provide baccalaureate prepared nurses who are currently employed in management or administrative positions in health care agencies with preparation to work in a variety of leadership and managerial positions in the health care system.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: LIFE SPAN
The dynamic processes of co-development of the individual from conception to senescence in physical, sensory, intellectual, emotional, and social development, Pattern of self-development with focus on the interaction between and among individuals.

INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACOLOGY
This course discusses basic concepts of pharmacology with emphasis on nursing implications.

CONCEPTS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
The philosophy and conceptual framework of the College of Nursing will serve as the foundation for exploring professional nursing, nursing roles, group dynamics, and the nursing process.

INDIVIDUAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT
This course introduces basic components and techniques of the health assessment within the framework of the nursing process. It focuses on data collection regarding the individual’s adaptation to internal and external factors within the environment. Emphasis is placed on the individual with high level wellness throughout the lifespan. Laboratory experiences include the application of health assessment skills.

BASIC PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
This course explores the basic principles and concepts of human disease processes. Normal, compensatory, and pathological mechanisms related to physiological functioning of the individual in health and illness are discussed.

DIAGNOSTIC REASONING FOR THE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL
This course will explore the diagnostic reasoning process. Emphasis will be placed on techniques for identifying and clustering cues, and formulating inferences in health care situations.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF NURSING
This theory course introduces basic concepts utilized in health promotion and minor health alterations. Emphasis is placed on identifying basic human needs and understanding principles guiding nursing practice.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING I
This theory course focuses on the nursing care of adult clients experiencing moderate to major alterations from health. Nursing care of clients with acute and chronic health alterations is explored.

NURSING OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY
This theory course focuses on childbearing using a family-centered approach to nursing care. Nursing’s role in education and promotion of positive family health goals in childbearing is explored.

CHILD HEALTH NURSING
This theory course focuses on the provision of family centered child care. Emphasis is placed on the nursing management of children and families in health promotion and adaptation to illness.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF NURSING PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum provides an opportunity for the application of concepts and principles basic to nursing practice. Experiences are provided in a variety of agencies for the utilization of the nursing process in caring for individuals with health promotion needs and minor to moderate health alterations.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING I PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum course provides an opportunity for students to use the nursing process to provide care for clients with acute and chronic health alterations. Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of acute care settings.

NURSING OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum provides an opportunity for the student to apply the nursing process in the education, assistance, and promotion of positive health goals with families during the childbearing process. Varied family structures are included in the clinical experience.

CHILD HEALTH NURSING PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum provides an opportunity for students to apply concepts and principles of child health nursing in a variety of health care settings. Implementation of care for children from infancy to adolescence occurs within the framework of this course.

INTRODUCTION TO THE RESEARCH PROCESS
This course discusses basic research methodology and its application to the practice of nursing. Computer aids to research are considered.

SEMINAR IV TRENDS AND ISSUES IN PROFESSIONAL NURSING
This seminar explores legal and ethical issues using a decision making framework to guide the practice of nursing. Major policies influencing health care and professional nursing will be included.

SPECIAL TOPICS IN NURSING
The study of various areas in nursing and health care as they relate to contemporary social issues. Course may be repeated for credit when topics vary.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
This clinical practicum course focuses on the application of the nursing process when providing health, promotion, protection, and restoration care for culturally diverse individuals, groups and families at varying levels of risk for psychological impairment in a variety of clinical settings.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
This theory course focuses on the synthesis of public health concepts within a preventive framework to promote and maintain the health of communities. The nursing process is used in community assessment, risk identification and application of community health nursing strategies.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING II
This theory course emphasizes the utilization of the nursing process in providing care for clients experiencing major physiological deviations from wellness. Nursing care of clients with multi-system complex health alterations is explored.

NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
This theory course focuses on concepts and principles of leadership and management. Functions of beginning nurse management roles are explored.

MENTAL HEALTH NURSING PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum course focuses on the application of the nursing process when providing health, promotion, protection, and restoration care for culturally diverse individuals, groups and families at varying levels of risk for psychological impairment in a variety of clinical settings.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum provides the student an opportunity to synthesize the nursing process with public health concepts in the nursing care of individuals, families, groups and communities with a focus on preventive nursing care.

ADULT HEALTH NURSING II PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum course provides an opportunity for students to apply the nursing process when caring for client with multi-system complex health alterations. Clinical experiences in a variety of settings are used.

NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICUM
This clinical practicum provides an opportunity for the transition of nursing students into professional nursing practice. Students will apply leadership and management principles and concepts to patient care coordinator of care, and functions of healthcare organizations.

NURSING AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY
This course examines application of the nursing process as it relates to selected cultures. The primary concerns will be diverse communication systems and cultural norms within the health care delivery system.

GROUP DYNAMICS AND THE NURSING PROCESS
This course focuses on the understanding of group dynamics and its impact on nursing practice. An exposure to small-group theory and research, a weekly sensitivity training group, and clinical utilization of theory in a nursing care setting are integral parts of the course.

ADVANCED NURSING CONCEPTS
This course explores advanced clinical and theoretical issues relating to nursing practice.

HUMAN SEXUALITY: IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING
This course explores the sexual needs of patients as these needs relate to the provision of nursing care for individuals who are ill or disabled.

NURSING AND THE AGED
This course examines the utilization of the nursing process with aged clients. Major problems of aging are emphasized.

PATIENT EDUCATION AND NURSING PRACTICE
This course discusses patient education relative to the prevention of illness and to the maintenance and restoration of health.

NURSING PROCESS SEMINAR
This course culminates professional socialization by focusing on the integration of behaviors essential in the transition from nursing student to professional nursing. Comprehensive review and evaluation of essential concepts and principles within the professional knowledge base including adult health, maternal/child, mental health, community health, and management.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
Selected topics are explored through reading, research, and/or field work.
