The philosophy of the Department of Nursing is to foster education as a dynamic, cognitive, multi-sensory process that provides for an individual’s continued growth and development in a changing world of diverse cultures. Education occurs in a highly personalized, student-centered learning community which provides for a reciprocal interchange based on mutual respect and integrity. Learners evidence growth by their ability to self-evaluate, by being self-directed, and exercising their rights and responsibilities.

The mission of the department is to prepare graduates for professional nursing practice who are capable of providing holistic care for individuals, families, communities, and populations of all ages and diverse cultural backgrounds in a variety of settings. The department affirms that nursing is both a science and an art that is creative, goal directed, evidence-based and concerned with the health and dignity of the whole person. In addition, our curriculum and clinical experiences provide the foundation for continued personal and professional development.

The undergraduate program seeks to develop the learner’s ability to think critically and creatively, to become an effective communicator, and to be able to make informed value judgments Graduate nursing education builds on this foundation of holistic care to prepare specialists at an advanced practice level who are capable of practicing as collaborative and independent holistic healthcare providers. Professional nursing may encompass the use of the political process to influence change in the health care delivery system and foster support for nursing education and research. Advanced practice nursing is distinguished by the application of well-developed specialized skills that are grounded in theory, research and expert clinical judgment.

BS IN NURSING

Our nursing students are prepared to enter professional nursing practice as skilled providers of holistic care for families and individuals of all ages and diverse cultural backgrounds, in a variety of settings.

Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission,* Quinnipiac’s bachelor’s degree program in nursing offers theoretical and clinical education as well as preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

From the very beginning, students benefit from well-equipped labs, detailed simulations of health care facilities, patient-oriented education and highly effective field experiences. A new computerized simulation lab is now open and being utilized to simulate live patient scenarios.

Quinnipiac’s strong affiliations with health care providers in the area allow students to complete clinical work at such institutions as Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Britain General Hospital, the Hospital of St. Raphael, and Veterans Memorial Medical Center, The Hospital of Central Connecticut, The Hospital for Special Care, Midstate Medical Center, as well as in private practices, clinics and other health care centers. The Department of Nursing and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn., recently formed a clinical partnership to increase clinical opportunities and internships and share a Nursing Education Specialist to educate junior and senior level nursing students.

THE BACCALAUREATE PERSPECTIVE
This course is specifically designed for the registered nurse student who is entering the RN to BSN track and introduces the RN student to the theoretical framework of the curriculum. Holistic nursing theory and practice are reviewed and compared to other theoretical approaches used in current practice.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF INDIVIDUALS I
This course introduces holistic theory as it applies to nursing. The major concepts of the nursing paradigm are defined holistically. Emphasis is placed on activities that foster skill in assessment of holistic health states and on nursing interventions that support and protect these states. These activities are aimed at strengthening and promoting holistic integrity. Focus is on the well person of all ages in diverse care settings.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF INDIVIDUALS I HOSPITAL LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Individuals I. It is composed of five hours in a clinical practice setting.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF FAMILIES I
This course considers the application of the concepts of holistic nursing theory to childbearing families experiencing alterations in holistic integrity. Alterations related to the developing family unit including role, structure, composition and patterns of relating are explored.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF FAMILIES I HOSPITAL LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Families I. It is composed of five hours in a clinical practice setting.

This course considers the application of concepts of holistic nursing in the provision and management of care of persons experiencing alterations in holistic integrity. Emphasis is on planning and development of actual and potential nursing diagnoses with appropriate nursing strategies.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY MANAGED IN THE COMMUNITY I
The basic concepts related to community health and public health nursing are introduced. The student also is introduced to the management of alterations in holistic integrity of individuals and families requiring nursing intervention in the community setting. Every Year, Fall and Summer

THEORETICAL BASIS FOR NURSING
The underlying theoretical frameworks of nursing practice, decision making and leadership are examined. Selected examples from decision-making, change, teaching/learning, leadership/management and delegation theory are explored with an emphasis on their relationship to nursing practice.

HOLISTIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Students are introduced to the holistic health assessment of individuals across the lifespan. Practice is provided in a laboratory setting.

HOLISTIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT LAB
This lab must be taken with Holistic Health Assessment. It is composed of two hours in the clinical skills laboratory

HISTORY OF HEALTH CARE AND MODERN NURSING
This course explores the evolution of health care and modern nursing from ancient times to current practices in the United States. Using primary and secondary source documents, students critically examine the social, political and economic forces that have influenced the development of health care and modern nursing. Topics include: the evolution of professionalism; gender, race and culture in nursing practice; the effects of technology and war on nursing practice, and the image of nursing within the media and American society.

NUTRITION IN HEALTH AND ILLNESS
This elective course is designed for health science students who wish to expand their knowledge of normal nutrition and learn more about the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of common health problems. Emphasis is placed on application of knowledge using nutritional assessments and therapeutic nutrition plans. Interventions and practical methods for facilitating change are explored.

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES
This elective course is designed for health science students who wish to expand their knowledge of complementary and alternative therapies. Emphasis is placed on the theories, applications, validity and efficacy of a wide range of treatment modalities.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS/CLINICAL PRACTICE
This elective course is designed for health science students who wish to enhance their communication skills to interact more effectively with clients across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on understanding and practicing various therapeutic methods of communication based on developmental theorists. Topics include family dynamics; life stages of development; and establishing healthy provider-client relationships and boundaries.

MIDSTATE MEDICAL CENTER SUMMER CLINICAL INTERNSHIP
This elective course is designed for nursing students who have completed the junior year nursing courses. It is comprised of a 36-hour work week which lasts for 10 weeks. The preceptored clinical experience is from June to August. Students are required to receive a passing grade in the preceptorship component, attend campus seminars, and complete written assignments. Students meeting program qualifications earn a salary and are eligible for tuition scholarships.

PHARMACOLOGY IN NURSING PRACTICE
This elective course provides nursing students with additional background in pharmacology. Emphasis is placed on application of pharmacologic knowledge in the prevention and treatment of health problems across the lifespan. Strategies to improve client knowledge and adherence with medication regimens are explored.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF FAMILIES II
This course is a continuation of Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Families I, building on the concepts of holistic nursing theory to families experiencing alterations in holistic integrity. Alterations related to development from infancy through late adolescence are emphasized in the context of their impact on the child and the family.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF FAMILIES II HOSPITAL LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Families II. It is composed of five hours in a clinical practice setting.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF FAMILIES II LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Families II. It is composed of one hour in the clinical practice laboratory.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY MANAGED IN THE COMMUNITY II
The management of alterations in holistic integrity of persons and families requiring nursing intervention in community settings is studied. Principles of public and community health as well as management of care in the home, schools and ambulatory health care centers are stressed. Students participate in a service learning project.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY MANAGED IN THE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity Managed in the Community II. It is composed of five hours in a clinical practice setting.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF INDIVIDUALS III LAB
This lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Individuals III. It is composed of two hours in the clinical skills laboratory.

ALTERATIONS IN HOLISTIC INTEGRITY OF ADULTS IV
This capstone experience provides an opportunity to demonstrate synthesis of the complex, clinical concepts essential for professional nursing practice. Emphasis is on the implementation and evaluation of holistic nursing care for individuals and families across the lifespan.

HOLISTIC NURSING IV HOSPITAL
This course must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Adults IV. It is composed of a nine-hour supervised, precepted experience in a variety of health care settings.

HOLISTIC NURSING IV LAB
This one-hour lab must be taken with Alterations in Holistic Integrity of Adults IV. It provides preparation for the nursing licensure examination and includes content review and computer lab practice simulating the computer adaptive testing format of the NCLEX-RN.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH
In this introduction to nursing research methodology, current nursing research is examined and evaluated in relation to its application to nursing practice. Qualitative and quantitative research techniques are explored.

ISSUES AND LEADERSHIP IN THE PROVISION OF HOLISTIC NURSING CARE
Problems in providing holistic nursing care in a pluralistic society are examined. Focus is on the analysis of trends and issues present in a dynamic health care delivery system.

COMMUNITY HEALTH INTERNSHIP
This elective course provides nursing students a precepted experience in a public or private community health agency. Participation requires a high level of self-direction, critical thinking and independent decision making. Students are responsible for seeking out a community placement in collaboration with nursing faculty. The experience is designed to meet the interests and preparation of the student and the needs of the agency.
