ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Provides opportunity for students to learn and adopt methods to promote their success in college, both academically and personally. Focus on development of practical knowledge and skills to assist students in meeting this goal.
CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF HUMANS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT
Introduces the richness and uniqueness of the patterns of diverse cultural groups; emphasis is placed on the commonalities and differences among persons of various cultural backgrounds.
TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
Current methods of health care, how they evolve, and directions for the future. Health, social, and legislative issues influencing the providers and consumers of services are examined.
LIFE SPAN: A HOLISTIC APPROACH
Provides a unified approach to the study of humankind. Patterns of growth and development of individuals, starting with conception, are explored. The aging process as a continuous biopsychosocial phenomenon throughout the life span is examined.
HUMAN INTERACTIVE PROCESSES
Overview of general communications theory, including components of communication, specific blocks, and selective aspects such as frustration, anxiety, and conflict. Theory applied in a small group situation. Emphasis on development of therapeutic communication.
NUTRITION
Study of essential nutrients and their functions. Application of nutrition principles to food selection for individuals and families, for modified diets, and for public health problems. Recommended: Knowledge of chemistry.

An introductory nutrition course. Nutrients and their functions in the human body throughout the life cycle.
THIRD-YEAR COURSES
HEALTH ASSESSMENT ACROSS THE LIFE SPAN
Focuses on health assessment of well individuals and families. Clinical reasoning process used in simulated settings to assess health patterns and develop diagnoses of health assets and actual and potential health problems.
NURSING CARE PROVIDER I
Focuses on developing clinical reasoning/judgments to provide nursing care to individuals across the life span. The care provider role and professional role are introduced with basic nursing knowledge and skills applied in various health care settings.
THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY
Focuses on the theoretical and scientific knowledge relevant to the nursing care of culturally diverse childbearing families. Emphasis on knowledge pertinent to health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention. Nursing strategies pertaining to the management of illness and symptoms of childbearing family also will be discussed.

Focuses on the application of clinical judgments and skills in the care of acutely ill clients. Emphasis on the use of clinical judgment to promote, restore, and maintain health in culturally diverse individuals with acute health problems across the life span. Relevant care provider skills are practiced .
RESEARCH PROCESS IN NURSING
Introduction to research and its application to the field of nursing; includes the research process, theory development, philosophies related to the inquiry process, and research methodologies as they relate to the clinical setting. Analysis of current research in light of its relevance to clinical practice or the development of nursing theory.
PHARMACOTHERAPEUTICS
Emphasis on the nurse's role in the administration of safe and therapeutically effective drug therapy. Major drug classifications are discussed in relation to administration methods, pharmacologic effects, toxicity, and nursing precautions and implications. Drug therapy is discussed in relation to life span development changes, religious preferences, and cultural mores.
FOURTH-YEAR COURSES
PSYCHIATRIC/MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Focuses on the theoretical and scientific knowledge relevant to the nursing care of culturally diverse psychiatric clients. With mental health problems, emphasis on knowledge pertinent to health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention. Nursing strategies pertaining to the management of illness and symptoms of the psychiatric client will be discussed.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN NURSING
Focuses on the knowledge necessary to negotiate successfully the transition from the role of student to graduate nurse. Course experiences require the student to synthesize and apply learning from previous courses within a variety of complex situations. Emphasis on anticipating the form of an evolving health care delivery system and its complementary provider roles, theoretical foundations for change and leadership, conceptual models, managerial skills, and sensitivities necessary for contemporary practice.
SENIOR EXPERIENCE IN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Focuses on experiences which facilitate transition from the role of student to graduate nurse. Students apply and synthesize learning from previous courses while providing care to groups of clients and communities, managing nursing systems, and implementing organizational change. Leadership and change agent behaviors within the role of direct care provider are emphasized.
NURSING ELECTIVES
HONORS SEMINAR I,II
Provides experiences that will open student's minds to the opportunities and intellectual resources inherent in the discipline, nursing research, and research-based practice. Focus is on unfolding a dialogue between the student's potential and personal vision and interests.
HONORS COLLOQUIUM I,II
Provides students with the opportunity to conduct an integrated review of the literature in an area of interest with close mentorship of faculty.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
Opportunity for independent study in nursing in an area of interest to be carried out under the supervision of an instructor and with the approval of the assistant dean for the undergraduate program. Students must arrange for a project supervisor within the College of Nursing prior to registering for the course. Open only to junior and senior nursing students, and others by special permission.
NURSING TOPICS
Offers the opportunity to explore a specific area in depth. Recent topics include exploration of loss, computers in nursing, pharmacology, and health care of the aged. Theories and specialized knowledge are the foundation of the course.
TEACHING PROCESS IN HEALTH EDUCATION
Focuses on current educational practices including history of education, educational theories, objectives or policies, teaching and evaluation strategies. Strategies for teaching children, adolescents, and adults will be presented. Students will develop, present, and critique health education plans for individuals, groups, and/or communities
NURSING INFORMATICS
Focuses on the analysis and development of computer programs for nursing. Topics include computer systems, information systems, computer-based education, decision making with computers, and artificial intelligence. Development of computer literacy skills and computer applications in nursing practice.
SENIOR HONORS PROJECT
Provides students with the opportunity to conduct a research project in an area of interest with close mentorship of faculty. Projects may include quantitative or qualitative research methods. Open only to nursing students with an undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of 3.8 or higher.
