Saint Petersburg College - Nursing Program




In 1927, St. Petersburg College (formerly known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college.

In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making SPC the first community college in the state of Florida to offer four-year degrees. On December 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees.

In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever.

Today, SPC has 10 learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in the state of Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. This program's offerings augment its two-year program that has been in operation since 1963. Four-year degree programs in Veterinary Technology, Public Safety Administration and Orthotics and Prosthetics began in 2005.

Now you can earn your Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing while continuing to provide Nursing care. Through online or one-day-a-week classes you can focus on learning while you continue to provide health care in your community.

Whether you take classes at the Caruth Health Education Center in Pinellas Park, online, or in one of our cohorts at area hospitals or health care facilities, you will be instructed by exceptional faculty members who are dedicated health care professionals.

SPC has seamless articulation with any accredited associate’s degree Nursing program. We also accept graduates from NLNAC-approved diploma programs.

After you receive your B.S.N., you will be able to smoothly transition into a master’s degree program if you desire. We offer M.S.N. degrees from a variety of colleges and universities at SPC’s University Partnership Center.

The mission of the St. Petersburg College Nursing program is to provide a diverse population of students with creative and innovative educational experiences designed to meet the health care needs of the community.

ACCREDITATION

SPC is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The RN to BSN program is new and innovative with classes and clinicals that meet your lifestyle. SPC is close to home and affordable and will offer the same high-quality degree you would expect from any state university. However, classes will be smaller, which means you will receive personal attention.

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing provides extended educational and employment opportunities for registered nurses. This program provides a seamless transition by using prior nursing education and experience as a foundation to explore advanced nursing practice concepts. The BSN coursework will address topics related to leadership and management, nursing theory, research, and community and public health.

HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND PHYSICAL APPRAISAL
This course focuses on client assessment, health risks and formation of nursing diagnoses and health teaching. Emphasis is on the process of client interaction and use of appraisal skills in the collection of biopsychosocial data across the life span. Application of pathophysiological concepts is required.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
This course focuses on cellular alterations in organ systems as they relate to selected disease states that impact the health of people as holistic beings. Special emphasis is on critical thinking and decision making related to these alterations in homeodynamic balance, their presentation and implications for nursing practice.

NURSING IN A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY
This course provides an examination of personal values, cultural beliefs and practices of selected cultural groups that contribute to the holistic nature of each group member. The focus is on communication and cultural responses to health and illness as they influence the homeodynamic balance of individuals and families. Nursing interventions that integrate varying cultural health practices are acquired.

PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND DIMENSIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE
This course encompasses an introduction to the history, trends, issues, and evolution of the nursing profession. The course includes an overview of selected nursing theorists and professional nursing practice in the changing health care delivery system. Opportunities will be presented that provide for the development of further socialization into the professional role of nursing.

LEGAL AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF NURSING
This course is an assessment of ethical and legal issues confronting nurses and other health care providers in a variety of settings. The course focuses on identification and analysis of legal and ethical concepts and principles underlying the critical thinking process in nursing and health care.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH
This course is an overview of the skills needed to read, understand, evaluate and use nursing research. This course focuses on research methods and the identification of researchable nursing problems.

NURSING OF THE FAMILY
This course focuses on the nurse’s role in managing the holistic health care of individuals and families with biopsychosocial disruptions. Emphasis is on the nursing process and principles from nursing, physical and behavioral sciences to enhance knowledge development necessary for the promotion of client/family well-being throughout the life span.

NURSING OF THE FAMILY PRACTICUM
This course applies theoretical concepts and the nursing process in providing holistic health care for families experiencing biopsychosocial health or wellness disruptions. Emphasis in the course is on the use of increased clinical judgment and health education for the purpose of promoting and maintaining optimal client family health, rehabilitation and all other aspects of life care. It will include clinical experience in a variety of clinical settings.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING THEORY
This course focuses on the holistic nursing role in the community. Emphasis is on concepts and theories related to community health nursing. Special attention is given to the community as client with emphasis on health promotion/disease prevention and teaching of groups in community settings.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING PRACTICUM
This course offers opportunities to practice the principles and theory of community health nursing in a variety of health care settings. Included are the identification of health care needs of the community as a client, and the nurse’s role as a facilitator, teacher, and evaluator in promoting and maintaining health and wellness.

LEADERSHIP THEORY
This course includes a focus on theories, concepts, and principles of leading and managing as well as pertinent legal issues faced by nursing leaders and managers. Emphasis will be on the methods to become an effective leader/manager including interpersonal skills needed for effective leadership and management, the different types of organizations delivering health care, outcomes management, and analysis of current research findings.

LEADERSHIP PRACTICUM
This course focuses on the application of the theories, concepts, and principles of leading and managing. Emphasis in the course will be on the development of skills needed for effective leadership and management. Opportunities will be provided to demonstrate appropriate leadership and management ability.

ELECTIVE COURSES
END-OF-LIFE CARE
This course will provide an overview of the issues related to providing end-oflife care. Although end-of-life care emphasizes a team approach, this course will focus on nursing interventions commonly used. Topics to be covered include symptom management including pain control, psychosocial needs of the patient and family, spiritual care, advance directives and meeting the needs of the caregiver.

FUNDAMENTALS OF QUALITY MANAGEMANT
This course provides an overview of Quality Management Principles useful in the health care setting and other related settings. The focus is on understanding the origins and history of quality principles, the development of models and their application to consumer and organizational concerns. Skills utilizing quality applications in process improvement and problem solving are acquired.

INTRODUCTION TO RISK MANAGEMENT
This course provides an overview of risk management and is designed to offer those who wish to move into a risk management position a basic understanding of the management of risk and its integration into strategic and operational planning. The focus is on gaining a fundamental understanding of the categories of risk, the techniques used to minimize risk, and the components of a risk management program. Topics to be covered include liability, property loss exposures, safety and accident prevention.

INDEPENDENT STUDY IN CLINICAL NURSING
This course may be taken to satisfy nursing elective credits required for graduation. It provides an opportunity for an individual student to systematically investigate, under faculty guidance, nursing roles in selected clinical settings.

INDEPENDENT STUDY IN NURSING
This course may be taken to satisfy nursing elective credits required for graduation. It provides an opportunity for an individual or small group of students to systematically investigate, under faculty guidance, selected topics relevant to the health needs of individuals or groups. It may involve a case study or other project that provides an opportunity for increasing breadth or depth of knowledge or skill.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH AND THERAPIES
This elective course consists of an overview of the field of Alternative Health that explores health and healing as related to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of consciousness and reviews current therapies in the field. The focus is to expand one’s awareness of alternative ideas and approaches for healing and to explore evidence for their effectiveness. Topics vary according to instructor and student interest.

SPECIAL TOPICS IN GERONTOLOGICAL NURSING
This elective course provides opportunities to explore special topics related to the aging process and care of the aging population in acute care and community settings.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE AND SEPSIS
This course focuses on infectious disease in individuals across the life span. Infectious disease processes and the body’s responses are included. Principles of prevention, treatment, and control of infectious diseases for nurses are provided.

INFECTION CONTROL FOR HEALTHCARE SETTINGS
This course examines infection control in healthcare settings with a focus on acute care facilities. Trends and issues regarding infectious disease in hospitals are included. Infection control strategies as well as the roles and responsibilities of infection control professionals are provided.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL
This course focuses on communicable diseases with public health impact at the local, national and international levels. The epidemiology of infectious disease and the role of infection-control professionals are included. Principles, practices and ethics of communicable disease prevention and control are discussed.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NURSING
The focus of this course is on the development of knowledge, techniques, and skills needed for the delivery of complex nursing care to clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention

CRITICAL CARE NURSING
The focus of this course is the development of knowledge, techniques and skills needed for the delivery of complex nursing care to clients experiencing health problems requiring critical care interventions.

INTERPRETATION FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
This course focuses on the essential information necessary for the accurate interpretation of basic cardiac rhythms and 12-lead electrocardiograms. A systematic approach is utilized for the interpretation of cardiac rhythms, their underlying hemodynamic significance, and current treatment modalities.

PROGRESSIVE CARE NURSING
The focus of this course is the development of knowledge, techniques and skills needed for the delivery of complex nursing care to clients experiencing health problems requiring progressive care interventions.
