Southwestern Oklahoma State University (School of Nursing)




Southwestern Oklahoma State University, an Oklahoma institution of higher education, was established by an act of the Oklahoma territorial legislature in 1901 as the Southwestern Normal School. Since that time, the institution has evolved to a regional university offering degrees in many areas of study including the health related areas of pharmacy, medical technology, medical records administration and nursing.

The SWOSU School of Nursing was established in 1976 under the Department of Biological Sciences. The program was the first rural baccalaureate nursing program in Oklahoma.

The School of Nursing admitted its first student to the upper School clinical component of the nursing major during the Fall semester, 1977. The program is state approved and nationally accredited. NLNAC 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor New York, NY 10006

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the School of Nursing is to provide the people of Oklahoma, specifically southwest Oklahoma, an opportunity for Baccalaureate education which prepares the nurse graduate as a beginning professional practitioner in a variety of clinical settings and career advancement for Registered Nurses. This is achieved with the following purposes:
1. To prepare a practitioner for beginning positions in professional nursing.
2. To facilitate career mobility for the registered nurse seeking a Baccalaureate in nursing.
3. To foster and support professional nursing in western Oklahoma.
4. To provide preparation for graduate study in nursing.
5. To facilitate scientific inquiry through faculty and student research.
6. To provide for continuous evaluation and nursing practice needs in western Oklahoma

PHILOSOPHY

The School of Nursing faculty expresses in this statement of philosophy their collective beliefs about Man, Environment, Health, Nursing, Learning, the Learner, and Baccalaureate Nursing Education.

We believe that man is a biopsychosocial, spiritual being in constant interaction with his environment. Individually and collectively, man has needs and goals which are determinants of his choice of actions. We view man in a holistic way, as more than the sum of his parts, and recognize his complexity and his uniqueness in perception, experience, and actions. Because man is capable of learning, he has an inherent capacity for change. We believe that man has basic rights which include individuality, dignity, health, opportunities for learning and the right to make decisions about his own health care.

We believe that man exists in an ever-changing environment. As biopsychosocial, spiritual beings, man possesses adaptive mechanisms through which he can initiate change or respond to change in his environment. The quality of the interaction of man with his environment affects his development throughout the life span and his ability to meet needs and attain goals, thereby affecting the well-being of individuals and social units. In order to share resources and promote adaptation, man forms societies with the expectation that social systems will be developed which provide for the protection, education, health, and socialization of the individual.

We believe that health is a dynamic state of being which spans life’s continuum from birth to death. The health continuum includes physical, psychological, spiritual, and social components that collectively determine adaptive responses to internal and external stimuli. Each individual possesses strengths and limitations which affect his position on the continuum. Since each individual is unique in his perception of experience, it is the individual who defines his state of health. Just as man has the right to health and health care, he also has the responsibility to be actively involved in his care and decisions about his care and to participate in the process of promoting, restoring, and maintaining wellness. Health care should be provided to the extent desired by the consumer (individual, family, or community). Health care is a collaborative effort of interdependent professions and consumer to reach identified goals of wellness. The consumer engaging the services of a professional health care provider assumes the role of client.

INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING
The profession of nursing is explored through the philosophy and conceptual framework of the School of Nursing. The historical development of nursing and nursing education are linked to current nursing practice. Ethical and legal aspects of nursing, as they affect the student entering nursing, are incorporated into the course. Student accountability and professionalism are introduced and developed.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING
Emphasis is on the acquisition and use of assessment and technical tools for the delivery of health care.

ADULT HEALTH
The student will explore the holistic health needs of adult clients. Emphasis is on application and analysis of competency necessary to restore health of the acutely ill client.

PHARMACOLOGY
Focuses on therapeutics of pharmacological principles and theory as applied to nursing and laboratory experience in the dosage calculation and administration of drugs.

CHILD HEALTH NURSING
Emphasis on nursing care of the child from infant through adolescence.

PSYCHOSOCIAL NURSING
Emphasizes the psychodynamics of health and use of the therapeutic process in the prevention, promotion, restoration, and/or maintenance of mental health among individuals, families and groups.

NURSING RESEARCH I
Emphasis is on skill competency in the use of the research process in nursing practice.

INDIVIDUAL STUDY IN NURSING
Individual study of specified topic in nursing. Credit one to two semester hours. Prerequisite: Admission to upper division nursing major and signature of Associate Dean of Nursing.

WOMEN’S HEALTH
Emphasis is on understanding and caring for women’s health care needs including health promotion and health restoration throughout the life span.

CHALLENGES FOR NURSES IN TODAY’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Current issues in healthcare that impact nursing practice with an emphasis on patient safety.

NURSING RESEARCH II
Emphasis is on skill competency in the use of critiquing and using nursing research.

CRITICAL CARE NURSING
Emphasis on care of the adult and pediatric patient in the critical care setting.

COMMUNITY NURSING
The student will explore and use information gained from previous courses. The emphasis is on application and analysis of the theories and skills as needed to promote the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness in the community at large, families and individuals.

NURSING LEADERSHIP
An exploration of leadership and management concepts and their impact on nursing practice and the delivery of health care. Leadership and management competencies will be implemented in a variety of practice settings.

NURSING ELECTIVE
The exploration of selected professional, political, social, legal and/or ethical theory as related to nursing practice in a specified practice setting.

STATISTICS FOR NURSING RESEARCH
Conceptual overview of statistics, providing information relating to measurement, descriptive, and inferential statistics.

BRIDGING NURSING PARADIGMS
The profession of nursing is explored through the philosophy and conceptual framework of the School of Nursing. The historical development of nursing and nursing education are liked to current nursing practice. Concepts unique to career ladder nurses are explored in depth.

WELLNESS THROUGH HEALTH PROMOTION
Emphasis on health promotion and illness prevention throughout the lifespan, and acquisition/review and use of assessment skills. Holistic health and wellness-focused interventions are introduced.

NURSING RESEARCH I
Emphasis is on competency in use of the research process in nursing practice. Two hours theory.

THEORY AND PRACTICE ELECTIVE
The exploration and application of selected professional, political, social, legal, and/or ethical theory as related to nursing practice in a specified practice setting.

COMMUNITY BASED NURSING ACROSS THE HEALTH CONTINUUM
Exploration of the theoretical concepts and clinical practice of nursing in and with communities. Community nursing practice with the goal of health promotion and maintenance will be emphasized. Clinical experiences will focus on the development and implementation of practice strategies to facilitate the health of entire communities.

NURSING RESEARCH II
Continued emphasis is on competency in use of the research process in nursing practice.

CONTEMPORARY NURSING LEADERSHIP
An exploration of leadership and management concepts and their impact on nursing practice and the delivery of health care. Leadership and management competencies will be implemented in a variety of practice settings.

ETHICS AND CARING
Exploration of the legal and ethical aspects of professional nursing practice when caring for clients at various places along the health continuum. Emphasis will be given to the ethics of care as a paradigm for ethical decisions.

ISSUES AND CONCEPTS FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
An exploration of the impact of advanced education on practice and the nurse’s response to current trends and issues influencing health care delivery. Emphasis is placed on the interface between individual and professional development. Must be in last semester of RN to BSN course work.
