Spokane Community College (Nursing Education)
Nursing offers students a lifelong career in the health care field. Nursing has greatly expanded in the last twenty years to offer students employment opportunities in a broad range of settings. Job placement includes acute care, extended care, clinics, doctors' offices, mental health centers, prison and correction centers, and other community agencies. Graduates can continue to pursue their education, leading them to areas of education, management, research, and entrepreneurships.
SCC's Nursing Department supports an educational environment in which the power and growth of learning are valued highly. The department is dedicated to the idea that our students will demonstrate four critical Student Learning Abilities as they relate to our institution and the larger community: Responsibility, Communications, Problem Solving and Global Awareness.
Our nursing program is built on a standard of excellence. SCC has had a nursing program since 1946 with the introduction of a practical nurse program. The associate degree nursing program, which prepares the graduate for licensure as a registered nurse, began in 1970. Graduates from both programs are well-received in the community. Part of the success of the nursing program can be attributed to the fact that the students have access to a nursing practice laboratory, computer-assisted instruction, and a variety of excellent clinical settings. The campus Learning Resource Center provides a wealth of information for the student in the form of books and electronic media. Students consistently practice the theories and skills learned in the classroom in the lab and in the clinical settings.

Nursing Education Courses
The nursing program is a sequence of seven quarters maximum. At the end of the first quarter the student is eligible to take the examination for nursing assistant certification. The student may continue for three more quarters to complete the requirements for the practical nurse licensing examinations. The student may then continue the nursing program for three more quarters to qualify to take the registered nursing licensure examinations.
Students begin patient care in the first quarter of the program. Beginning students take care of clients in extended care facilities. In the second quarter of the program, they learn in acute care facilities, caring for medical and surgical clients. Students then have experiences caring for maternity and newborn clients, mental health clients, and clients in a variety of settings.
