St. John's College - Department of Nursing

You can experience the career of a lifetime -- nursing. Nursing professionals are dedicated to therapeutic caring of individuals and families through health promotion and wellness, care of illness and rehabilitation. Professional nurses develop careers in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, community agencies, business or industry and the military. Nurses serve as nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical specialists, case managers, nurse midwives, nurse administrators, nurse educators, school nurses and nurse researchers. St. John's College's world-class clinical sites and educational facilities introduce you to many different career options. Past graduates of St. John's College, Department of Nursing have been highly sought after by employers.

Take a path that leads to a future full of varied experiences and opportunities, challenges and personal rewards. We invite you to become part of a tradition in nursing education that encompasses over 100 years of history.

As a single-purpose, upper-division institution, the college is devoted solely to the education of professional nurses. However, upon graduation, you leave St. John's College with more than nursing skills. The college experience gives you a broad-based education along with a bachelor's degree.

The curriculum builds on two years of lower-division liberal arts and science courses that, when combined with professional nursing classes and clinical experience, culminates in the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). This professional degree prepares you to meet the demands of both a changing society and a highly competitive job market.

As an upper-division college, St. John's College seeks to attract students from diverse backgrounds. Men and women of different ages and varied religious, economic, cultural and social backgrounds become part of the community that St. John's College promotes through academic excellence and Christian caring.

As a small, private college, St. John's has a rich Christian mission that guides its direction. The college values an individual's moral and spiritual development as well as academic and professional growth. We believe the foundation of nursing is caring for other human beings.

Prior to entering St. John's College, students complete 60 semester hours of lower-division coursework at another accredited college or university. Cooperative contracts exist for completion of the lower-division prerequisites and for transfer of credit to St. John's College with three colleges: Lincoln College, Lincoln Land Community College and Springfield College in Illinois. The general education courses expand your knowledge of the world, yourself and other human beings. These courses prepare you for life in the 21st century.

"St. John's Hospital provides a ministry of exceptional health care services to the people of central Illinois in the Catholic tradition of compassion, justice, and reverence for life."

Our mission's two facets -- business and spiritual -- help us redefine our purpose every day. The business side manages the realities of how to serve those that need our help, while the spiritual side focuses on the people who come to be healed.
