Nursing has been traditionally defined as a helping profession, but there's more to it than that. To be a nurse requires a high level of critical thinking, organization, and leadership. Nurses assess patient health needs, providing independent treatment as well as collaborating with other health care professionals.
Professional nurses educate, counsel, and provide hands-on care. Nurses work with individuals in all stages of life and health. Modern nurses use highly technical equipment while keeping the holistic needs of the patient in focus. Surveys show nurses are some of the most respected professionals nationwide.
Currently in this country there is a major nursing shortage. High demand and nursing shortages mean more jobs, higher pay, and job security. So this is an excellent time to be entering the field of nursing!
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to educate nurses capable of meeting the challenges of a diverse population within an ever changing health care arena. Our program focuses of developing nurses who competently engage in high quality ethical practice. Our graduates provide professional service to individuals and groups striving to reach higher health potentials.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.S.) IN NURSING
The nursing program leads to a bachelor of science with a major in nursing. Its primary mission is to prepare graduates for the practice of professional nursing in a wide range of institutional and community settings. This curriculum track prepares students to become registered nurses.
The nursing program is registered by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the National League for Nursing. The program also holds approval from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The program holds membership in the National League for Nursing Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Council of Deans of Nursing of Senior Colleges and Universities in New York. It supports an active Chapter (Gamma Delta) in Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing.

PERSPECTIVES: WOMEN'S HEALTH
Explores health issues specific to women. Emphasis placed on developing and improving self care. Focuses on growth and development throughout the life cycle and increasing competency for healthy adaptation to biological, cultural and social stressors. Liberal arts.
NURSING FUNDAMENTALS
This course explores concepts that are foundational to nursing care, including components of ethical, professional practice. A holistic approach is emphasized as basic to meeting the health needs of individuals and families. The nursing process and other critical thinking skills are analyzed. Laboratory and clinical experiences are provided to develop selected assessment and psychomotor skills. Includes 45 skills laboratory hours.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Assessment of clients across the lifespan through history taking and physical examination. Documentation of findings using a functional patterns framework. Analysis described in nursing diagnostic terminology. Concurrent with BIO327. Liberal arts.
CHANGES: NORMAL AGING
Variations in physical aging and mechanisms for coping with resultant functional changes across various cultural, ethnic groups. Liberal arts.
ELDER ABUSE & NEGLECT
Current perspectives on abuse and neglect of the elderly, including epidemiology, intervention strategies, legal and ethical issues. Liberal arts.
HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
Perspectives on American health care delivery, past, present and future. Analysis of the impact of such problems as AIDS, rising liability insurance costs, declining applications for health professions, confidentiality/computer security, our aging population and the lack of comprehensive planning on health care, now and in the future. Formulation and evaluation of potential societal solutions. Liberal arts.
HEALTHCARE INFO SYSTEM
Practical and financial implications of the evolution of automated information systems in healthcare. Review from the beginnings of support of financial systems through the growth of ancillary systems and ending with the current trends in integrated systems and the lifetime medical record.
PHARMACOLOGY I
Pharmacology and its relationship to the wellness-illness continuum. Concepts basic to an understanding of the effects of chemicals on human physiology (especially with maternal and pediatric clients) and on psycho-social-cultural-spiritual aspects of drug therapy.
THEORETICAL FOUND OF NURSING
Designed to meet unique learning needs of RN-to-BS student. Concepts related to foundations of professional nursing: decision-making, legal, ethical, nursing, group process, counseling, family theories, health teaching and self-care.
CARE:FAMILIES/ELDERLY
Designed to meet unique learning needs of RN-to-BS student. Trends, factors, affecting family health; coping strategies in transitions, crises; interventions to promote self-care. Issues relevant to health care of elderly. Responses to aging stressors; use of nursing process to optimize functional well-being.
PROFESSIONAL CONCEPTS
Concepts basic to the development and progression toward professional nursing.
CHILDBEARING FAMILY
Emphasizes provision of family-centered, self-care during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and early neonatal life. Responses to simple and complex stressors are discussed. Clinical application of the nursing process to childbearing families.
CARE: PEDIATRIC CLIENT
Adaptation of care related to the pediatric client and family. Responses to simple and complex stressors. Concurrent alterations in physiology, use of pharmacological agents and related therapeutic modalities. Nursing interventions for health maintenance and health restoration.
CARE OF ADULTS I
Commonly occurring alterations in physiology and use of related therapeutic modalities. Adaptation and self-care concepts of people's responses to these stressors. Nursing interventions for health maintenance and health restoration.
CARE OF ADULTS II
Responses to complex stressors. Complex alterations in physiology and related therapeutic modalities. Nursing interventions for health promotion, maintenance and restoration of wellness.
HIV/AIDS
Acquaint the student with the biology and history of HIV/AIDS in the U.S., and as a worldwide epidemic. Preventive strategies and current medical treatments stressed. Interconnectedness of gender issues, cultural practices, racial issues, homophobia, substance abuse, societal and economic factors, and political policies will be explored.
WEST/EAST HEALTH CARE
Explores issues in health care in Asian countries with an emphasis on the health care provider. Content will include historic foundations, traditional Asian Medicine versus Western Medicine, present day problems and how they mold the practice discipline. The role of Western countries in helping to solve them in today's political and economic environment will be explored.
COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING
Stressors of selected aggregates, community resources and organization for health care. Nursing role with individuals, families and groups. Meets requirement for professional nurse licensure on reporting child abuse and neglect.
RESEARCH IN NURSING
Theory, research and practice as framework for nursing practice. Concepts, skills of the research process. Evaluation of research literature. Application of research findings to practice.
MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP
This course addresses the professional role of the nurse as leader and manager within the health care environment. Students examine selected management models as a basis for planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the provision of quality nursing care in a variety of health care settings. Throughout the course, students participate in leadership seminars and explore the concepts of vision and creativity, leadership development, excellence, and complexity and change theory. Emphasis is placed on ethical decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, empowerment, and the development of communication skills essential to working effectively with groups and organizations. Students work with nurse managers/leaders to apply the principles of management and leadership in a practice setting. Includes 67.5 clinical hours.
PSYCHIATRIC NURSING
Maladaptive psychosocial responses to stressors. Interventions and therapeutic modalities to facilitate adaptation and self care.
PROFESSIONAL ISSUES
Impact of educational, legal, ethical, political and social issues on the profession of nursing.
PHARMACOLOGY V
Designed to meet the unique learning needs of RN-to-BS student. Pharmacology and its relationship to the wellness-illness continuum designed for the advanced learner.
CARE OF ADULTS III
Complex alterations in physiology. Acute, trauma, emergency nursing, with focus on health maintenance. Incorporation of high technology and pharmacology in client care. Includes 90 clinical hours.
CLINICAL PRACTICUM
Application of professional concepts and skills in a variety of clinical settings. Designed to meet the unique learning needs of RN-to-BS students, using a clinical and seminar format.
IND STUDY IN NURSING
Individualized theoretical/clinical independent study in an area of interest with the guidance of a selected faculty member. Approval of the proposal by the advisor, the faculty sponsor and the department chairperson.
