INTRODUCTION

The School of Nursing offers a four-year program of study leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing (B.S.N.). Graduates from this program are eligible to write the licensure examination and, upon receiving satisfactory scores, become registered nurses (RN). The curriculum in the School of Nursing is designed to accommodate individuals with baccalaureate and master's degrees in fields other than nursing, as well as registered nurses who have nursing diplomas or associate degrees.
The Upper Division nursing courses, along with the Lower Division foundation courses, are designed to prepare graduates as generalists in nursing. Graduates are prepared to practice in a variety of professional roles in diverse health care settings.
The program (curriculum) objectives for the School of Nursing are the outcomes or behaviors the student will achieve upon completion of the program. Graduates of the program have the foundation for graduate study for advanced practice in nursing.
Nursing students are an integral part of the undergraduate student body of the University. They share with other university students in arts and sciences, education, business, agriculture, home economics, and engineering in all aspects of the academic, social, and cultural life of the campus.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the School of Nursing furthers the mission of the University as a provider of a strong academic program in nursing with a special commitment to meeting the health care needs of the diverse population of the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. The goal of the nursing program is to prepare graduates to become nursing leaders in rural and urban areas who are committed to professional nursing standards, open to the changes occurring in the health care system, and motivated to improve the health status of individuals, groups, and communities.
The School of Nursing offers an undergraduate course of study leading to a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. The program prepares students to be professional nurses eligible to take the state licensure exam. The program also provides the opportunity for diploma and associate degree registered nurses to complete their Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
Curriculum development is an ongoing process. The changes in the curriculum are based on the following: Assessment of student needs, program evaluation outcome measures, and the health care marketplace. The faculty considers the research literature in nursing and health care as well as academic and clinical position papers developed by professional groups.
Instruction, which includes classroom teaching and clinical supervision, is the major component of the faculty role in the School of Nursing. Faculty also engages in scholarly activities and University and community service. The faculty provides leadership in many local, regional, and international community groups. Faculty works closely with students, individually, and in groups, to provide support, advising, mentoring, and professional and personal enrichment.
Shared governance is an integral part of the mission of the School of Nursing. Faculty participates in decision-making and policy development. Students are members of selected nursing faculty organization committees. Students are encouraged to participate in professional and University organizations.
The School of Nursing provides educational opportunities to all eligible persons without regard to age, gender, color, race, religion, national origin, or disability. Tennessee Technological University School of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING

In 1965, the State Board of Education requested each university in the system to investigate the need to establish a school of nursing. At that time the State Board of Education was proposing that each state college be authorized to establish a two-year associate degree program in nursing. However, in 1965 in the Upper Cumberland Region, clinical facilities were inadequate to support a school of nursing. By 1973, clinical facilities had improved, and Tennessee Technological University began to plan for a school of nursing. As the result of a feasibility study that identified a need for nurse manpower in middle Tennessee, the State Board of Regents made a commitment to support a new baccalaureate school of nursing if federal funding could be obtained.
Tennessee Technological University received a three-year Special Projects Grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the Tennessee Technological University's School of Nursing admitted its first class of students to the junior level nursing, fall 1980. The first Bachelor of Science degrees in nursing were awarded June 1982.
In 2004 TTU joined a collaborative project with the other five TBR universities in Tennessee to develop an MSN program. This program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and has been well received with admissions far exceeding expectations.
A building project has been initiated to house the ever-growing demand for nurses. The School will occupy the new 65,500 square foot state-of-the-art structure in the Fall of 2008.
The Tennessee Board of Nursing initially granted approval to the program in 1980, and the program continues today with full board approval. The TTU School of Nursing maintained accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission through 2005, at which time the faculty voted to align with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Initial accreditation was granted for the maximum of five years (2004-2009).

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN)

TTU School of Nursing offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). During your first two years, you will concentrate on general education (Gen Ed) requirements. The Gen Ed requirements, while giving you a solid educational foundation, will also provide a good foundation for your nursing classes. Your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, and sociology will promote your success in your nursing classes and also allow you to understand and interact with patients while in clinical experiences and after you graduate.

Your last two years, a combination of nursing classes and clinicals, will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients in all areas of nursing, including community health.

FIRST-YEAR CONNECTION: UNIVERSITY AND NURSING A course designed to enhance connection of the first-time college student with the University and to Nursing. This course is designed to augment skills required for academic success through academic and non-academic out-of-classroom activities. INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING CONCEPTS I Historical perspectives, mathematics and terminology basic to nursing; critical thinking and professional communication; and roles of the professional nurse. FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING This introductory course in nursing is designed to introduce the student to basic concepts, principles, and skills necessary for building effective nursing practice. Nursing process is introduced as a foundation for future clinical application. PHARMACOLOGICAL CONCEPTS IN NURSING I Introduction to major drug classifications including actions, interactions, reactions and contraindications as well as monitoring parameters. This course will prepare the nurse to safely administer medications, monitor drug therapy and teach the client to safely take part in his/her drug regimen. MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING I Concepts of psychosocial and physiological aspects of health/illness and therapeutic communication. MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING I Performance of nursing skills in lab and clinical settings based on principles of nursing process and practice. HEALTH ASSESSMENT AND PROMOTION This course is an introduction to health assessment based on an understanding of anatomy and physiology and social sciences. The focus is on comprehensive data collection through history and physical examination. MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING II Medical-surgical nursing concepts; also including communication skills, teaching/learning principles, ethical/legal and economic issues. MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING II: LAB Emphasizes the application of the nursing process in a variety of medical-surgical clinical settings. MENTAL HEALTH NURSING Basic mental health nursing concepts; also including communication skills, teaching/learning principles, ethical/legal and economic issues. MENTAL HEALTH NURSING: LAB Emphasizes the application of the nursing process in a variety of mental health clinical settings. PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES FOR THE PROFESSIONAL NURSE This course will examine the outcomes of disruption of normal physiology; the alterations and mechanisms involved in the disruption; and the manifestations in disease and at risk conditions. Major diseases will be explored, in part by using a conceptual approach. The focus of the course is to provide the professional nurse with an understanding of pathophysiological principles as the basis for nursing assessment and therapeutic intervention. SURVEY OF PHARMACOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF NURSING Review and update of major drug groups; administering drugs; intravenous solutions with implications for nursing practice. BRIDGING TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE An online course designed for RN’s to bridge the gap between technical skills and professional nursing practice by focusing on self analysis and validation of one’s own ability to utilize critical thinking, communication, and therapeutic intervention in nursing practice and to identify improvement areas for life long learning in a changing healthcare environment. WOMEN'S HEALTH AND PERINATAL NURSING This course focuses on concepts of professional nursing care of women in their childbearing years and their families. This course encompasses knowledge of growth and development, culture, family and pathophysiology from the natural and social sciences, and liberal arts in assessing, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of these populations. WOMEN'S HEALTH AND PERINATAL NURSING: LAB This course focuses on implementation of the nursing process with women in their childbearing years and their families. This course applies knowledge of growth and development, culture, family and pathophysiology from the natural and social sciences, and liberal arts in assessing, implementing and evaluating the health needs of these populations. NURSING CARE OF CHILDREN This course focuses on concepts of professional nursing care of children and their families. This course encompasses knowledge of growth and development, culture, family and pathophysiology from the natural and social sciences, and liberal arts in assessing, implementing and evaluating the health needs of these populations. NURSING CARE OF CHILDREN: LAB This course focuses on implementation of the nursing process with children and their families. This course applies knowledge of growth and development, culture, family and pathophysiology from the natural and social sciences and liberal arts in assessing, implementing and evaluating the health needs of these populations. PHARMACOLOGICAL CONCEPTS IN NURSING II Continued study of the major drug groups with emphasis on the responsibility of the nurse in medication adminstration, patient education and health promotion. RESEARCH IN HEALTH CARE Study the research process, with development and presentation of a completed research proposal. HEALTH CARE OF COMMUNITIES Focus on the dynamics and nursing needs of individuals, families, communities, national and international groups. HEALTH OF COMMUNITIES: LAB Organization and delivery of nursing care to individuals, families and groups in a variety of community health care settings. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT Introduction to concepts of leadership and management in nursing; preparation for role transition from student to graduate. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: LAB Clinical experiences applying concepts of management and leadership. ELECTIVES PERSONAL WELLNESS MANAGEMENT Holistic approach to assisting individuals in the promotion of wellness including: health guidance, nutrition, stress reduction and fitness. ONCOLOGY NURSING Focus on oncology nursing and hospice concepts used to provide care for the clients with cancer in a community or institutional setting. PREPARATION FOR PARENTING Focus on parenting skills with infants and children, labor and delivery and newborn care. INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL CARE NURSING Developing critical care assessment skills, emphasizing nursing decision-making, problem-solving and intervention. CARDIORESPIRATORY INTENSIVE CARE Care of clients with cardiovascular and respiratory deficits requiring invasive, therapeutic nursing interventions; cardiac dysrhythmias. SCHOOL HEALTH NURSING Introduction to school health nursing and the role of the school nurse as caregiver, coordinator, manager, consultant and leader. This course provides registered nurses with the necessary beginning skills to manage a comprehensive school health program. SUMMER CLINICAL EXTERN Skill-oriented clinical experience based on nursing process in the clinical area of the acute care or extended care facility. ADVENTURES IN GLOBAL AWARENESS: EXPANDING CULTURAL SENSITIVITY The course provides a trans-cultural experience through international travel and self exploration to increase personal and cultural awareness, sensitivity and respect. CONCEPTS OF GERONTOLOGY Physical and psychosocial aging processes. Issues in the care of the senior adult. SPECIAL TOPICS Directed study and research on a selected topic. Available to students on an individual basis, with consent of the Dean, as faculty load permits.
