University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (College of Nursing)
HISTORY
The College of Nursing of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was established as an independent professional school of the University in March, 1953, in response to the interest and support of professional and community groups throughout the state. Establishment of the school was designed to help meet the pressing demands for larger numbers of skilled nurses and to make available to people of Arkansas the best possible educational preparation for the profession of nursing.
The first program established within the College in 1953 was the baccalaureate program. Its purpose is implemented through a unified curriculum combining general education and professional instruction within a university setting. The graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Nursing Science was initiated in the fall semester, 1971. This program builds upon baccalaureate education and provides a program for advanced preparation in nursing. Further information is provided on other pages of this web site.
The Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) was implemented in 1997, with the first class graduating in May, 2000. Graduates of the doctoral program are prepared to advance the art and science of nursing through research and scholarship. They are expected to assume leadership positions in academic and health care settings and to influence nursing practice, health care delivery, and the social awareness of nursing's contributions to the health care arena. ORIENTATION FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT STUDENTS
Addresses selected concepts of the curriculum and information specific to the UAMS College of Nursing (CON) program and the UAMS academic environment. Concepts essential for academic success including the electronic classroom and the electronic extension to the traditional classroom are employed.
FOUNDATIONS I THEORY & PRACTICUM
This course explores concepts, theories, and principles inherent in the roles and competencies of the professional nurse and applies this knowledge to practice. Identified basic human needs, the nursing process and basic nursing skills are presented and used to guide professional nursing practice in simulated and clinical setting. 90 hours of clinical practice.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Assessment of health status with emphasis on normal findings, cultural, ethnic, and age variations of clients. Students will develop skills of history taking, inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. They will use body systems to organize data. 45 hours of clinical practice.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY IN NURSING
An introduction to pharmacotherapeutics, medication administration, major drug classifications, and the implications of medication for nursing care.
PROFESSIONALISM AND CONCEPTS OF NURSING PRACTICE
Concepts essential for professional role development and processes that enhance nursing practice are described and discussed.
FOUNDATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING II
Further develops the professional role through integration of course content with previous courses. Introduces community-based nursing, care of the family, perioperative nursing, teaching/learning principles, and selected health alterations. Selected skills are performed in simulated and clinical settings. Uses the nursing process to provide nursing care to clients.
NURSING CARE OF THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY
Theoretical basis for professional nursing practice with childbearing families. Addresses and applies the nursing process to the development and responses to alterations in health with emphasis on childbearing as a family experience.
NURSING CARE OF CHILDREN THEORY & PRACTICUM
Theoretical basis for professional nursing practice with children and their families. Emphasis is placed on health-related needs, development, and responses to alterations in health. The clinical component provides opportunities to utilize the nursing process while providing individualized care congruent with age, stage of growth and development, and health status.
PSYCHIATRIC/MENTAL HEALTH NURSING THEORY AND PRACTICUM
Explores and applies the conceptual basis for professional nursing with clients in the mental health field. Provides psychiatric nursing services to individuals, within the context of their families, with an emphasis on communication, health issues, development, critical thinking, ethics, and role development.
NURSING CARE OF ADULTS THEORY AND PRACTICUM
Through lectures, students explore the theoretical, scientific and professional basis of nursing care of adults and their families with alterations in health patterns and development. The practicum provides students with opportunities to utilize the nursing process and practice the roles of providing and coordinating care in an acute care setting.
INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH
Introduction to research methodology, critique of research literature, application of findings to nursing practice, and identification of clinical problems for study.
COMMUNITY/PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING THEORY AND PRACTICUM
Theoretical basis for community/public health nursing and public health practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Application of community/public health theory and nursing process with clients in selected community settings.
NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Concepts of management, leadership, and followership, and organizational structure are frameworks for managing delivery of nursing care to groups of clients in an acute care setting. The transition from student role to professional nursing role is emphasized.
NURSING CARE OF THE OLDER ADULT THEORY AND PRACTICUM
This course provides a theoretical and clinical basis for professional nursing care of older adults and their families. Nursing care of the Older Adult addresses health related fields, developmental tasks, responses to health, acute and chronic illness concepts, and use of the nursing process in diverse health care settings. 90 hours of clinical practice.
AMBULATORY CARE THEORY & PRACTICUM
Explores and applies the conceptual basis for professional nursing practice with clients in the ambulatory care setting. Examines and implements the baccalaureate role in the ambulatory care setting, including social and demographic trends, with emphasis on providing accessible, continuous, collaborative affordable, and personalized care.
ISSUES IN NURSING AND HEALTH CARE
Introduction to processes for examining issues and ethical dilemmas in nursing and health care using an analysis of current nursing issues impacting the profession and client care.
COMPLEX HEALTH PROBLEMS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Advanced theoretical concepts of nursing care for clients experiencing complex health problems occurring throughout the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on theory application, principles of complex clinical decision making, identification of therapeutic nursing interventions, and critical thinking in a variety of health care delivery settings.
SPECIAL TOPICS
One to six hours credit depending on the nature and extent of the topic. The course is designed to encourage creative independent study and will be supervised by a faculty preceptor.
