The UCLA School of Nursing Generic/Prelicensure program for undergraduate study leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Nursing began in Fall of 2006. The B.S./Generic Prelicensure program is designed to prepare students for a career in nursing. This is a four-year program beginning in the freshman year. Transfer students will be considered for admission beginning with Fall 2008.

This program focuses on managing both individuals and population-based cohorts within an acute care hospital or medical center. Conceptually, the curriculum has been developed according to the principles of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention; moving from a systems, population-based approach, to a cohort-based or unit-based perspective, and culminating with an intense focus on the individual-level of care. Graduates of the program will be well-prepared to deal with the demands of the present day high acuity patient populations and sophisticated technological environments. The program provides an B.S. degree with a major in Nursing and eligibility to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) to be certified as a registered nurse (R.N.) after completion of the program.

Students successfully completing the B.S. degree also acquire an educational foundation for entry into the master’s program that prepares nurses for clinical practice for the hospital or advanced practice nurses for roles as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and administrators in primary and acute care.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE I
Lecture, two hours. Within context of history of nursing, introduction to practice of nurses, including role of advocacy. Discussion of effective use of self as professional nurse in relation to ethics, cultural competence, and human diversity. Introduction to ethical principles (justice, autonomy, veracity, beneficence, confidentiality) and professional values (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice) in relation to nursing practice throughout history in health/illness and end-of-life contexts. Letter grading.

FIAT LUX FRESHMAN SEMINARS
Seminar, one hour. Discussion of and critical thinking about topics of current intellectual importance, taught by faculty members in their areas of expertise and illuminating many paths of discovery at UCLA. P/NP grading.

INTRODUCTION TO NURSING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE II
Lecture, two hours. Advanced discussion on history of nursing, with focus on contemporary role of nursing in relation to ethics and social justice. Analysis of ethical principles (justice, autonomy, veracity, beneficence, confidentiality) and professional values (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice) in relation to nursing practice throughout history in health/illness and end-of-life contexts. Evaluation of social, cultural, legal, and political forces in relation to paternalism for professional nurses working with diverse patient populations in the 21st century.

FUNDAMENTALS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY
Epidemiology focuses on distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations. Fundamentally, epidemiology seeks to control health problems in communities and institutions.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY I
Designed to provide students with basic understanding of pathophysiological changes that occur within internal environment of individuals. Understanding these alterations is basic to providing quality nursing care. Discussion of system variations across lifespan.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY II
Designed to provide students with understanding of pathophysiological changes that occur within internal environment of individuals. Presence of dysfunction or disease of selected systems provided as rationale for nursing diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. Letter grading.

STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM
Entry-level research for lower division students under guidance of faculty mentor. Students must be in good academic standing and enrolled in minimum of 12 units (excluding this course). Individual contract required; consult Undergraduate Research Center.
